but I would be grateful if you could tell me that you have at least given serious consideration to banning the posters who were harrassing her.

Thank you.

But isn't a bit of a problem if you bring your real life into your online persona? Putting your job into your online name is effectively saying this is who I am and it can define your posts and how they are perceived. If the rev wanted to post as anyone else does, it would seem sensible to use a nickname that doesn't imply a greater authority than the next person. I haven't seen anyone on here using Dr. or JP or CPN in their names, although i am sure there are such people on here.

And we could all be anyone, couldn't we? If someone is holding themselves out to be something more than just another poster, it is wise to be sure that they are that person rather than a hairy trucker.

I am not challenging anyone here, just putting another pov.

CZ Rev (or fromer Rev) used to led a worship group on here, so it was relevant to her postings.

smallorange (clementine) I totally agree.

I was disappointed by the posters involved also.

ForeverOptimistic · 20/01/2009 13:22

Blimey! I have just the thread in question.

What is it with some of the moldies . Perhaps posting on a site full of intelligent and witty posters gets a bit dull somtimes.

Rhubarb · 20/01/2009 13:23

Is it just me or do people seem to be having personality transplants lately?

Threadworm · 20/01/2009 13:24

Littlelapin claimed on one of the moldie threads that the moldie site eschewed bitchiness in favour of constructive discussion. The thread that was hijacked was an extremeyl sensible, thoughtful one on a very sensitive topic until some moldies came over to attack rev. Unbelievable.

princesspeahead · 20/01/2009 13:24

Can I make it extremely clear that although I had posts deleted on that thread I have NEVER contacted MN about the Rev and I have NEVER made any investigations into her private life. I don't know what she is called, I don't know where she lives, I know nothing about her personally.

I do still maintain that her statement that all of her posts were being checked by her supervisor in the church of england was clearly a fiction, and I agree fully that she should not have Rev in her posting name, based on the way she has been posting.

I hope MN will delete posts suggesting that because two of my posts were deleted, I have been involved in any harassment or anything of that nature whatsoever. Those suggestions are slanderous in the extreme.

Threadworm · 20/01/2009 13:25

I did not assume that you were involved in rl persecution peahead. The attacks on the thread were enough to disgust me.

CreativeZen · 20/01/2009 13:26

Goodness, can you do that? Hold online worship sessions? Wouldn't you need some sort of supervision/overview by the church for that? After all, you don't know/can't see your congregation and could say something untoward.

OverSimplistica · 20/01/2009 13:26

Please don't turn this into a Moldies thread; i thought we were past that (I am peachy btw)

soapbox · 20/01/2009 13:26

Banned for what exactly? The posts said things like 'I don't believe you are a Rev at all' perhaps somewhat more colourfully put, but not in a way.

Are we to ban everyone who questions whether someone is a troll? If so MN will have a VERY long list of people to ban!

As the Rev might say 'let those of you who are without sin, cast the first stone'!

VinegarTits · 20/01/2009 13:26

Have just skimmed the thread in question.

Disgraceful, i hope you ban the posters MN

soapbox · 20/01/2009 13:26

Oops - that should say 'not in a SWEARY way'!

southeastastra · 20/01/2009 13:27

agree with soapbox. mrrev wasn't exactly without fault either was he

OverSimplistica · 20/01/2009 13:27

CZ have a look at the reluctant worshippers thread- its a kind of reflection thread, welcoming to all regardless of belief

Worship was my crap way of describing it- reflection much better; Christian based reflection

soapbox · 20/01/2009 13:28

No - now he (and she) were definitely sweary

wannaBe · 20/01/2009 13:28

but what username she uses is her decision, surely? In the same way as people put their children's names in their usernames or their rl names...

I agree it is perhaps unwise to bring your rl into your online identity and make yourself identifyable to people, but that is a matter of personal choice too, no?

That thread was not the place to launch a personal attack on anyone. afaik this poster hasn't been asking for money or sympathy has she? so what would it have mattered if she wasn't who she said she was (and on the whole I am in favour of outing most trolls).

But now that she has apparently proven to mn hq that she is who she says she is, I think action needs to be taken against those who harrassed her on here. In the same way as trolls are banned, I think that people who harrass genuine posters who are proven to be who they aay they are should have similar action taken against them.

As to people involving themselves in her personal life, perhaps there is a lesson to be learned as to how much information one should post about oneself on the internet, and how vulnerable that might make one.

TotalChaos · 20/01/2009 13:29

how do we even know it's MN posters rather than malicious lurkers who have been carrying out the real life harassment?

soapbox · 20/01/2009 13:29

Wannabe - you could say the same about any troll though couldn't you? It hasn't stopped people outing trolls in teh past has it?

TotalChaos · 20/01/2009 13:29

fine line between harassment and genuine concern as to somebody's identity though at times....

Lauriefairycake · 20/01/2009 13:29

Well she can choose what to call herself surely.

soapbox · 20/01/2009 13:31

I think harassment from what I saw of the deleted posts would, as PPH says, would be stretching the truth a VERY long way.

CreativeZen · 20/01/2009 13:31

That was my point. People are baying for the blood of people who dared to query the rev's identity without any evidence that they have done anythign more than that.

~Does this mean that no one can challenge another poster regarding who they say they are? Is this now a free-for-all for trolls because no one can challenge them?

smallorange · 20/01/2009 13:32

I've no issue with her use of the name 'rev,' but equally I wouldn't have assumed that she is a real reverend because of that.
Her posts were thoughtful and informative on that thread - surely that is what is important.

smallorange · 20/01/2009 13:33

BTW am not clementine!
