REGISTRATION FEE - WOULD YOU OBJECT?

just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

This is a real oldie, but I like to post it from time to time:

The Psychology of Cyberspace - The Natural Life Cycle of Mailing Lists

Mumsnet's just a giant mailing list really.

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 22:35

this notion of wise ole poster is sycophantic and cliquey.how does anyone know new or not

i dont

dont care either

are we open forum or cliquey common room mentality "oh look a newbie"

humph

the ability to glance askance at names and differentiate newbie and ole gimmer should in itself disbar one from censoring anyone

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:36

SM, what makes you think a moderator would look at the names and censure accordingly?

Moderators look at what is posted, not who has posted it.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 12/10/2008 22:37

How about they just create a function whereby you can delete individual posts (which you can now, if you email MNHQ and beg ). Then your sage advice on getting newborns sleeping 12 hours remains while you can easily delete the post where you accidentally outed yourself as Cherie Blair or whatever.

Or, you could just have the wit to namechange a lot and save yourself the hassle.

If something has to be done then it has to be something simple and sensible that doesn't meddle with the essence of MN or the accessiblity of the site.

TeenyTinyTorya · 12/10/2008 22:37

This is why I left Bounty (that and the bitching/cliques). I think I will take a break from Mumsnet.

FAQ · 12/10/2008 22:37

I have been "moderated" by people who are friends of mine - they basically stepped in and told me to "shut up or your posts will be deleted"

HRHSaintMamazon · 12/10/2008 22:38

i certainly wouldn't volunteer as a mod.
but i have no idea who has been her 5 years or 5 minutes.
of course there are names i recognise but then again there are others who have been here far longer than me and yet they are new to me.

the only time it is obvious to me if someone is knew is when they start a thread asking if its ok to wash a sausage roll down with fruit shoot.

kind of exclusionary and cliquey.hardly in the spirit of freedom of expression

only post on Mn if you get it,toe party line

will there be a dissidents board, naughty corner for those who dont get it

FAQ · 12/10/2008 22:43

get a grip SM - obviously you've had a bad experience with over zealous mods elsewhere on the big wide internet, but there are plenty of forums which have moderators that aren't power crazy loons deleting anything they don't agree with

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 12/10/2008 22:43

I've splinters from sitting on the fence on this one.

I feel we need to make MN accessible for people who need help. I also think the more leisurely or self indulgent topics Style/AIBU/Chat to name a few should be viewable to paid up members only.

twinsetandpalls · 12/10/2008 22:43

I have been here about 5 years so probably count as an oldie but have no clue anymore who is an oldie or newbie so could not even start to give the newbies a hard time.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 12/10/2008 22:44

Why are we arguing about who would be mods? Surely the mods would be anonymous and appointed by MN.

As DP (also a poster, infrequently ... I think!) has wistfully pointed out, all good sites become victims of their own success eventually. This place is huge - for those who want to preserve the little insular sanctuary it once was, it just won't be possible.

However, it is a hugely valuable resource (a parenting website not populated by huns and chavs ) and one which I think most of us, new and old, have a real fondness for. I stick to my guns - we need to embrace change, but I think [tiny nervous voice] maybe it's the posters who need to change, not the set-up?

HRHSaintMamazon · 12/10/2008 22:44

well if you go over to Netmums/bounty/any other parent related forum you will see that they are quite different in their tone to MN.

There are a few posts a week where people come on and say "im off" because they just seem to miss the whole point of mn.

OP posts:
Carmenere · 12/10/2008 22:44

Those who don't get it, don't stay. But it is naive to think that there isn't an 'it' to get. There is a reason that MN is so popular and it is because it has a different feel to other talk boards. Presumably a moderator would have to have been around a bit and be familiar with the site to be useful.

new, old i dont know and dont care.amazed people think they can tell

make the newbies wear a Scarlett letter n

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:45

Previous moderators were chosen by MNHQ so time served may or may not have come into it.

But of course any one who is going to moderate has to 'get it'! MN has always had a talk policy and the moderators would remind people and enforce it when needed. If you didn't 'get' the general ethos, then you would be pretty crap at the job.

You seem to complain a lot about cliques.

I have yet to see any cliques here. Friendships and people who chat together regularly so 'know' each other a little better maybe, but that doesn't make them exclusionary or cliquey.
