just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

quiche?what cooking forum?or is it a lil quirky in joke

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:50

Generally IME the ones who go one about MN royalty tend to be the same ones who chunder on about cliques.

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 22:50

eh me then

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:50

I did try to combine modes whenever I could FAQ

FAQ · 12/10/2008 22:50

SM - I take it you don't post on any other internet forums (on any subject)??

As I don't think I've ever been on a forum where there isn't a "group" of well known/highly revered posters who had many many posts (often indicated with a number of posts next to each posters name)

HRHSaintMamazon · 12/10/2008 22:51

Ok clearly your a bit miffed at being forgotten on some "MNers you know" thread or something.

get over it. your starting to sound rather bitter and twisted now.

Carmenere · 12/10/2008 22:51

SM just piss off if you don't like it here, the whinging is boring.

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 22:52

are you having a go?LOL how funny

IAteDavinaForDinner · 12/10/2008 22:52

It's tonight Matthew, and don't drag me into this fgs!

Kewcumber · 12/10/2008 22:52

"But would a postal address requirement be feasible, Kewc?"

Yesand you can do a degreeof checkingwith PAF validation, checking etc but...

We use lots of validation and still I get at least one complaint a week that someone has managed to register an email address fraudulently. And we require a email adress, postal address, we paf validate and use our own internal validation systems. It's just not possible to be secure on an essentially free service.

MN needs traffic volume to be commerically viable and charging even 50p per registration would kill that.

Personally I think teh only way to deal with it is the same as if it happend in RL(and of course eople get stalked and threatened in RL).

MN needs a policy (within acceptaible DPA guidleines) that they will support the prosecution of any person making personal threats to an individual. And then police to be involved - caution and restraining order if possible

Sorry it sounds cld blooded. But I wouldn;t accept this in RL and I wouldn't accept it from a byber bully either. One of the reasons I don't have a problem sharing my photos/stories etc is because I have no doubt if it happened to me I would make life as miserable for the fucker as I could.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 12/10/2008 22:53

Come on, seriously, don't all start stropping because SM sees things differently. She's entitled to her views, you lot can disagree if you like.

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 22:54

a thread about unwarranted abuse toward posters telling me to piss off.how ironic

quick call a moderator

Carmenere · 12/10/2008 22:56

Oh fgs it is such a load of old bollix, yes it takes some people years to become recognised on here, yes people on here make friends with each other. So what? It is only as important as the importance you ascribe to it.

AbstractMouse · 12/10/2008 22:56

Moderators would just be a bad thing, and as for tor the person asking why it would be bad to delete posts, what about those who search the archive or look to threads for help? Wouldn't be a lot of use if 50% of posters decided to delete afterwards.

E.g "I whacked my kid around the head, is this a good and wise thing to do?" -deleted post- -deleted post- -deleted post- -deleted post-, yep it's a great form of discipline, do it all the time, brilliant idea -deleted post-.

littellpian · 12/10/2008 22:56

For fucks sake, you lot could argue about ANYTHING

there are many posters here who have disagreed.
but SM has gone beyond voiving an opposing PoV and is instead droning n about newbies and royalty.

as i say, she just comes across as someone a bit bitter about being missed off some poll or other.

the whole newbie/royalty/clique thing is bollaux anyway. i was named on a royalty thread recently and ive only been here a year or so.

Its not about how important a poster is, its about hwo often you crop up in that posters list of threads.

there can be posters who post all day everyday for years. but if i don't post on teh same threads as they do i will never come across them and so will never know how great their advice is or whatever.

its about perspective.
and soap boxes

Simplysally · 12/10/2008 22:57

Instead of a fee why can't MN block the pc that the troll posts originate from as well as the email addreses? Sure, new email addresses are easy to recreate but combined with a block on your pc it would mean having to schlepp out to an internet cafe or friends house to rejoin or post trollery. All our pc numbers will be accessible to MN techs after all.

IAteDavinaForDinner · 12/10/2008 22:58

Presumably MNHQ decided against mods at some time in the past? Why? I hadn't realised until tonight there ever were mods. [naive]

sally - it is possible to get a dynamic IP address. Ususally the only people who would deliberately bother are the people most likely to hide behind it.
