REGISTRATION FEE - WOULD YOU OBJECT?

just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

well there's not much point having a mod that hardly anyone has heard of - they'll get no respect/not be listened to by anyone

childrenofthecornsilk · 12/10/2008 22:18

Haven't read thread but wouldn't object to registration fee.

EffiePerine · 12/10/2008 22:19

Mods a very good idea - MN can't be on the ball 24 hours a day, esp as the site has got so large

I think fees would just confuse things TBH and (as others have said) wouldn't discourage the determined nutter

MN do need to do something, it's not just the cod thing now, things are starting to implode. There is a hell of a lot of unprecedented nastiness and general ignorance around now - I've only been a member for a couple of years but have seen a massive difference in teh last few months. We need to be quicker to freeze/delete threads and more inclined to ban people IMO.

(we could always call them prefects rather than mods and give 'em a nice shiny badge )

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 22:19

my god, respected and non respected posters.you are as good as your last post.what a horrid time served mentality the ole timers policing the new posters

There must be a good reason MNHQ haven't started charging, or surely they would have done that before now?

And surely the same goes for mods?

Where are they, surely they don't have homes to go to?

seeker · 12/10/2008 22:21

Lots of people don't have debit cards. Lots of trolls (sorry) are regular posters having a "fun" evening. The cost of a 50p joining fee would be prohibitive.

It's possible that having to give your address when you register and name change might help.

Or what about banning name changing altogether?

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:22

The moderator thing is difficult.

MNHQ took away the mods because of the legal wranglings.

Having moderators in place means they would be expected to have very tight control over the boards, so you end up on a slippy road to locked threads for petty reasons.

FAQ · 12/10/2008 22:25

no it's not about "old timers policing the new posters" - I've been "moderated" by posters that have posted for a LOT less time than me.

But if you do have mods and nobody listens to them (probably because no-one knows who they are.......or because the mod happens to be too far up their own arse to see what's going on around them in the clear light of day) then there's no point in them being there.

Carmenere · 12/10/2008 22:27

Easier said than done when they threaten you in 'real life' kerrymum.

Self deletion of posts not a good idea either IMO. The archives make up a big part of MN. If the older conversations have loads of posts missing, they make no sense.

twinsetandpalls · 12/10/2008 22:30

I think it is hard to ignore when real life and the internet clash in such an unpleasant way, as has happened to Cod.

But more generally Kerry I agree with you,

I am vaguely in this industry in RL - membership fee would commerically be the kiss of death to a site like this. Not viable I'm afraid.

SaTanicGore · 12/10/2008 22:32

People use the archives all the time. There is a wealth of useful information in there as well as some fascinating, moving, and bloody funny stuff!

I often search the archives when I want to know something. Infact I am about to go back into the archives for advice on a new tent. Before I pester MB

FAQ · 12/10/2008 22:34

BHN - what even if it helps someone who is in the same situation you were at that time get through it??

HRHSaintMamazon · 12/10/2008 22:34

regular doesn't have to mean someone who is here all day everyday.
there are posters here who do not post a lot, but are here regularly and have been around long enuogh to "get" MN.

We couldn't possibly have someone who is all fresh faced and just come over from say Netmums. they would be freezing every bloody thread because they didn't understand that debate was good and healthy.

Sm i am starting to think you have a big pole up your arse about being considered new. have you not been mentioned on some quiche thread or something?
A moderator would be there to prevent things boiling over. and quite often these incidents happen with the more well known posters as well as the lurkers and occasional posters.

hence them being anon. not because they would carry more weight but because they would know when it was right to step in and when it was better to leave be.
it would also allow them to intervene on a thread even if it involved a good frined.

So don't post then!

You post on the internet, it is out there. If you want total privacy, hold a private conversation with friends instead of posting on a forum.

Simple.

Chat drops off in 90 days precisely so the basic drivel can vanish into the ether.

seeker · 12/10/2008 22:34

Good Lord - I agree with Kerry!

Ignore them.
