REGISTRATION FEE - WOULD YOU OBJECT?

just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

What about having certain sections of the site that are only accessible to those who have paid? Chat, for example? The rest would still be open to anyone.

cthea · 12/10/2008 20:47

More importantly, I haven't been on for a couple of days, what's up with the trolling - in summary?

Also, would you have to pay up every time you change names? I'm only on my 3rd, so I could cope financially, but it's funny when others change names just to answer on a particular thread.

FAQ · 12/10/2008 20:47

Hecate - actually BMC lost quite a few members when they introduced the fee (we have some here on MN now

QuintessenceOfFrankenShadow · 12/10/2008 20:48

Is it too much to ask that everybody has to register and give their address, AND subscribe to CAT with a credit card / paypal account that is registered to their address?

In addition there should be a policy that MNHQ outs malevolent trolls and tell us instantly if this is a newbie or an oldtimer namechanging to troll.

Am I going to far?

Saturn74 · 12/10/2008 20:48

I think it is important for MN to be free, so anyone who is urgently seeking support can post straight away.

I don't go on there now they charge (I only ever did go on there when MN went down!! I wasn't going to pay £12 to see me through MN breakdowns!)

argh, someone put us out of our misery - what's happened??

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 12/10/2008 20:53

I'd pay but can see why it wouldn't work. I moved around a lot and due to that was deemed 'high risk' by most bansk and couldn't get a debit card. How would people with no debit card pay?

The activation code through the post sounds like an idea. Maybe if you have a debit card you don't need an activation code, but those who don't apply for an activation code to be posted?

HeinzEVILSight · 12/10/2008 20:53

cod

mumofmonstersOBE · 12/10/2008 20:53

I wouldn't object to paying a nominal fee if it ensures things don't get sinister.

If a poster shows serious signs of being deranged or starts threatening another poster I think it's important they are identifiable.

On the other hand I can see Humphrey's point... there just seems to have been so much vindictive trolling lately that something is going to have to give -don't mind the funny ones AT ALL, but it has been worrying at times lately.

it may not stop teh truely determined but it would mean that Mn had their details. don't know if anything/something coudl be done. im sure when MSN operated its groups facility you could have your account blocked if you were found to be trolling. maybe the people who host mn could do the same?
dunno, lilke i say im not very technicaly minded.
