just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

Namechanging is a red herring. It is not the problem and removing it won't solve it. A ridiculous reg. fee won't stop it either.

berolina · 12/10/2008 21:14

MN is too big these days to expect MNHQ to authorise all name change requests.

umberella · 12/10/2008 21:14

it's not censorship though -i think the issue is being able to identify people with psychopathic tendencies if they harass other posters in rl....you'll never get rid of trolls, people will always troll for one reason or another, be it boredom, fun, whatever.

If a poster on here is then stalked/harassed by another poster in RL, surely it would be a Good Thing if mnhq had their real details via card/paypal payment?

expatinscotland · 12/10/2008 21:14

'hughjars was a troll? '

hardly a shock or a surprise.

TheBlonde · 12/10/2008 21:15

I don't think a reg fee would solve anything
You already have to pay to CAT

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 12/10/2008 21:15

Hughjarsss was the troll not HughJars

FAQ · 12/10/2008 21:16

No it wouldn't totally elimnate the problem - but it would certainly reduce the number of problems.

southeastastra · 12/10/2008 21:16

moderators seem to make sense to me

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 12/10/2008 21:17

No, I don't think it would reduce the number of problems either.

Saturn74 · 12/10/2008 21:17

I think it would help if threads could be deleted more quickly when they turn nasty.

Often these things occur late at night, and of course MNHQ have to sleep sometimes , so maybe going back to using mods for a while might be helpful?

expatinscotland · 12/10/2008 21:17

Yes, and you could tell the difference between HughJars and that hughjarssss chav troll straightaway.

QuintessenceOfFrankenShadow · 12/10/2008 21:18

I dont understand how you can say namechanging is a red herring when we have seen countless times trolls namechange and come back to troll, namechange and come back to troll. The hughjarsss went on for quite a while, and she may be back in fact too. Not just her, but others.

HughJars · 12/10/2008 21:18

I'm not prepared to give up one of my favourite names because of a mistaken identity!

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 21:19

i have seen some so called old posters so called MN royalty post a right bag of abusive shite, with no comment. someone else posts same comment and they get their head jumped on and called newbie

i dont know how any of you keep a troll count.i am clearly oblivious

WideWebWitch · 12/10/2008 21:19

I go with the 'why should only people who pay get advice' school of thought. I don't want mn to only accept posters who pay really, I think it should be available to anyone.

And, like id cards, I don't think it'll actually solve any problem with trolls: they have 50p too!

But if there was a voluntary membership fee, based on income or something, I'd pay it. hell, I'd pay ANYTHING to still be able to post if I'm honest!

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 12/10/2008 21:19

Because you can simply register under multiple email addresses. I have this registration

MerlinsBeard · 12/10/2008 21:19

mods seems to be the way to go

HughJars · 12/10/2008 21:19

and this one

FAQ · 12/10/2008 21:19

expat - that's me being blonde again - I just registered "hughjar" the number of s's hadn't quite sunk in - didn't realise there were two people

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 12/10/2008 21:20

which is why I can namechange so quickly.

HughJars · 12/10/2008 21:20
LynetteScavo · 12/10/2008 21:21

I would be happy to pay any fee now that I'm "in", but I found mumsnet in an hour of need and desperation. Spucmasher calmed me down, and I've been here ever since.

Where is Spudmasher these days?

Mumsnet used to be like a small town, now it's a sprwling metropolis.

DforDiva · 12/10/2008 21:21

no problem at all. and how about stop changing name? too

Dottoressa · 12/10/2008 21:22

I'd say it's best to let it be. If we suspect someone of trollery, why not just ignore them?

(Though there do seem to be some views that are considered to be trollery when they're really not - such as voting Conservative, bottle-feeding, criticising state schools and so on...)

monkeymonkeymonkey · 12/10/2008 21:22

I would be happy to pay a fee.
I think that a fee to post but to allow anyone to view the posts would be good.

One of the things that I really like about mumsnet is the anonymity of it, that there is no obligation to post under, or sign off in your real name.
