REGISTRATION FEE - WOULD YOU OBJECT?

just seen that yet another troll has gotten in and caused one of the more prolific and well loved members of the site to leave.

This is getting to be more than just an occasional annoyance.
we seem to have become victims of our own sucess. we are all so fabulouse we are attracted a much wider audience, thoguh sadly as we become more popular we appear on teh radar of a few nutballs too.

How would we feel about the possibility of a 50p joining fee.
obviously this would have to be paid either via card or paypal so there would be some kind of verification of the persons ID.
it would mean that if trollery was supsected MN would find it easier to investigate, if the poster seemed to be in trouble MN qould be in a position to help organise real help.

but mostly it would deter the 14 year olds joing to post about pube's or incest or whatever.

The fee would be minimal so that its not too restrictive.

What do you think? woudl it work? would it be workable from MNHQ perspective or would it cause other red tape type problems?

I just really think we need to do something before the site implodes.

Another site I frequent has areas available to view without being a member but also areas that are private - members only. The registration process takes a fair amount of information.
I think that if people couldn't read the stuff without registering they wouldn't be tempted to meddle.

BananaFruitBat · 12/10/2008 20:57

Maybe people should stop namechanging as often as they do. It can be halfway through a thread before I work out that some of the posters aren't new, but have name changed.
I think it would be easier to control and introduce a membership fee if that happened.

FAQ · 12/10/2008 20:57

hughjars was a troll

MurderousMarla, they will call round and feed your children Greggs sausage rolls and fruit shoots.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 20:58

I would be willing to pay but not sure it would work for reasons others have mentioned.

Stopping namechanging would probably help, but am aware that sometimes namechanging is useful/helpful/funny so that would probably not be a good thing. Could MNHQ control namechanges, so people had to contact them to change. Maybe that would deter people.

umberella · 12/10/2008 20:58

regrding name changing - i think it's a GOOD thing we can do this - it allows posters to post about sensitive subjects incognito (i.e. if anyone else knows their normal name), and don't think it should be stopped.

I don't think the point of a fee would be to stop trolling necessarily, but it creates the potential for identification which is important if anyone starts getting really out of hand...

ohdearwhatamess · 12/10/2008 20:59

Happy to pay but it would have to be much more than 50p to be effective.

I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that most trolls were regulars with an axe to grind though.

HughJars · 12/10/2008 20:59

HughJars wasn't a troll, HughJarsss was.

combustiblelemon · 12/10/2008 20:59

50p to stop crap like this happening is definitely worthwhile.

southeastastra · 12/10/2008 21:00

it does take a while for mnhq to get onto a troll or malicious namechanger.

find that a bit depressing as they advertise in the guardian for ad sales executives for "£££

summerdressesandlacyboots · 12/10/2008 21:00

Yes FAQ - she was "namechangedtonotgetflamed" or some such thing and outed herself on a thread about moving to Reading

oh dear

what;s the reading connection?

do i have a nutter nearby

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2008 21:01

fee is no disincentive to troll.tbh trolls come in any guise but they are a tiny minority

yes i would object to a fee, and mn already have my registration details

don't know what has been going on.
tbh self regulation works, folk always suss the stirrers and trolls.

one person pita poster is venerated and tolerated by other's.takes all sorts really

and tbh one does need to put MN in perspective.words on a screen.bunch of anonymous strangers.yes stuff gets said, folk will get the hump

some posters are vulnerable/sensitive/fragile, and will take stuff to heart

sometimes one may need to step away from MN if it does affect you and prioritise RL stuff

fee would turn mn into a members club
inhibiting spontaneous join and post

who gets keeps the profits?site founders?
would that make them liable if someone paid a fee and claimed said they suffered as a result of troll.taking the fee implies MN will protect posters or act upon troll

would mn have to compensate for failing to protect from troll

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 12/10/2008 21:01

If you're really bad, they'll feed them chicken McNuggets too.

combustiblelemon · 12/10/2008 21:01

Marla, it could stop that same person from reregistering with a fresh IP address once they've been banned.

berolina · 12/10/2008 21:02

I see entirely where you are coming from on this, Mamazon, and the idea definitely has its merits. What does worry me are the admin issues for MNHQ and particularly the lack of 'instant' access for people needing urgent advice.

I would support a name-and-shame policy for malicious namechangers (think remoivng the namechange facility would not be a good idea as people namechange to post about delicate matters too).

FAQ · 12/10/2008 21:03

Was it you I've been debating with the Hughjars???

HRHSaintMamazon · 12/10/2008 21:04

i agree with what you have said SM BUT we have had a run on quitye serious trolls that have actually managed to cross into RL and affect members.
