Declaring AI posts

Would it be a good idea to add to MN posting rules

  1. You may use AI to help formulate your opening post if you need help with organising your thoughts / want help with literacy but you must declare this at the start of your OP

  2. A follow up poster may post an AI version of a long / difficult to comprehend opening post but must declare at the start this is what they have done

  3. No other AI use is permitted when posting.

It goes all the way up to number 11.

What makes you believe that?

What makes you believe that?

You're like a dog with a bone that won't let go.

I don't like dogs.

So your opinion is that I do not know the difference between belief and opinion?
How strong do you believe that I do not know the difference between belief and opinion?
You can express the strength of your belief that I do not know the difference between belief and opinion on a scale of 1 to 10.

So to clarify if I am understanding you, on a scale of 1 to 10 about how strong your belief is that I don't know the difference between belief and opinion, you say it's 11?

And the reason you believe that is because I am like a dog that won't let go and you don't like dogs?

Am I correct in my understanding that the strongest belief you have that shapes your opinion is that one?

Just posting 1 rule
Hope that's ok

People can use AI to create a post but the human must ensure the post looks like a human did it instead of AI

cakeorwine · 26/10/2026 19:00

You may use AI to check spelling and grammar, but must declare this if the corrections substantially improve the quality of your post.

cakeorwine · 26/10/2026 19:00

You must not use AI to analyse a poster's contributions over an extended period, even if all the posts are publicly available.

cakeorwine · 26/10/2026 19:01

You may use AI to help organise your thoughts, but must ensure the thoughts were entirely your own before organising them.

TeenToTwenties · 26/10/2026 19:03

@cakeorwine Just STOP. You are making yourself look Ridiculous.

I'm quite upset & irritated by Cake (I know I shouldn't let it get to me).

I started this thread in good faith for a discussion on how MN should manage AI use in threads, and Cake's threads taken as a whole have disrupted and derailed any decent potential discussion.

Cake may have some good points hidden in there somewhere but within the reams and reams of text it is difficult to find them.

Oh I'm just scrolling by, like I say, I can't be arsed reading it.

Waitingfordoggo · 26/10/2026 19:54

@TeenToTwenties I can understand your irritation. Cake seems determined to dominate the thread, both with AI and now with questions that don’t really make sense or aren’t relevant. I’m scrolling past their posts. I can’t understand why they’re doing it. Initially I thought they thought they were being funny, but now it just feels really disruptive. I wonder why cake doesn’t want people to talk about AI use on MN.

TeenToTwenties · 26/10/2026 19:58

Indeed.

I think it is a valid viewpoint to say 'I think any AI use should be allowed as <reasons>', but cake hasn't done that so I don't know what is going on!

I think the problem is is that your proposed rules are unenforcable.

1)You may use AI to help formulate your opening post if you need help with organising your thoughts / want help with literacy but you must declare this at the start of your OP

How would you know if someone has not declared it?

2)A follow up poster may post an AI version of a long / difficult to comprehend opening post but must declare at the start this is what they have done

As before - How would you know if someone has not declared it?

3)No other AI use is permitted when posting.

In this thread you have admitted you cannot tell if I am AI or not. So how would you enforce it.

TeenToTwenties · 27/10/2026 12:29

MN mods can enforce anything they want to their best judgement.
There isn't a court of law evidence of proof required.

OP posts:
cakeorwine · 27/10/2026 12:32

A proposed experiment - the OPs rules are that no AI should be permitted except for helping with some words and must be declared

I think that it is very difficult to tell if a poster is AI or not. ChatGPT has independently created a fictional MN poster called Caroline. She has a backstory that ChatGPT created all by itself. I have tested it and found the responses convincing athough Caroline does slip up.

If people would like to ask her questions as if she were a real MN poster, then please do and I will post responses.

Then let me know if you think she is passable as an MN poster. You don't have too but I think it will show that the rules for AI are very hard to enforce - except for obvious spambots

Thanks

Can I ask how the MN mods would know if AI was used.

You can ask Caroline some questions
