MNHQ, you know why.

I find I’m spending only about 10% of the time actually reading a thread. The rest is clicking fucking x’s to close down ads, trying to stop the glaring, moving ads at the top, scrolling past mid-thread ads that go on for ages, or scrolling past ‘promoted by’ bollocks that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic that you’re in.

This site is now like Reach media.

Such a shame.

Just adding my voice to say that something seriously needs to be done, if you don’t want to see a mass exodus. There is a lot of goodwill here (I’ve been around for decades, I’m sure you can check). But fuck me, if you don’t tone down the ad invasion, me & many many others will be off.

Still, I’m sure the shareholders are happy, eh.

I'm very surprised at Chrome being apparently so privacy-aware, being one of the big main ones. Google aren't especially known for that!!!

Brave is an amazing browser - also very handy for YouTube, if you get fed up of multiple ads before you can listen to a two-minute clip or tip (or indeed a much longer video!).

egganbacon · 15/10/2025 16:36

I was thinking my iPad was knackered because it gets really hot ,now realise it’s only when I am on MN so the adds are overheating the battery!

SprayWhiteDung · 15/10/2025 17:15

It's very bad form for sites to serve overbearing ads that routinely consune excessive bandwidth or make devices run hot.

It's this kind of behaviour that makes people simply hate the very concept of ads, rather than accepting them as a basic fact of how the non-subscription parts of the internet work.

It's probably a silly analogy, but if your local pizza takeaway put a leaflet through your letterbox every month, you'd sigh and pop it in the recycling with no drama; but if they started putting 500 leaflets through every single day, you'd probably either board up your letterbox or look into some kind of lock that only the postman has the code for - and you'd urge everybody you know to never ever buy pizzas from them!

saraclara · 15/10/2025 17:48

Thanks everyone who's mentioned Duck Duck Go. I downloaded it and am very happily posting from it right now!

HollyhockDays · 15/10/2025 17:52

R0ckandHardPlace · 14/10/2025 18:52

I downloaded the App because the web version is practically unusable, but it only takes you to the start or the end of a thread, not to the point you were last at. If it’s a long thread you have to scroll for ages and try to remember where you were up to. It’s infuriating.

You can bookmark on the app to take you to a particular post.

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/10/2025 13:44

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 14/10/2025 17:35

And they still haven’t fixed the “take you to last post seen” feature which hasn’t been working since May. I don’t understand if the thread knows there are 24 new posts since I last looked why can’t it take me to that point like it used to do rather than taking me to 3 pages away? Mnhq have been told multiple times and done nothing.

This is absolutely baffling isn't it?

Sal820 · 16/10/2025 18:06

My latest now is the site keeps freezing and then says page unresponsive. It's like one thing improves and 3 others get worse. Doesn't happen anywhere else, just here.

JudgeBread · 16/10/2025 18:15

Download Brave browser, bye bye ads. Simples.

This is what’s happening with my iPad, also the battery drains really quickly.
just reading the four pages of this thread, the pages have reloaded five times when it’s not doing that the majority of a page goes blank/white it’s infuriating.

StiffAsAVicar · 16/10/2025 18:33

Mid way reading your OP, the page just randomly refreshed via a blank screen for a few seconds. It’s so annoying, it’s been particularly bad for several weeks

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 16/10/2025 18:38

I can’t use my I Pad for MN. I get a few lines of writing, then the rest of the screen below is a blank white space. The last few days, I have been getting the scrolling adverts with no x to close box; and I can only read a few words as they are so big! The word “Arden” came up frequently!

I don’t take in adverts - my DC are grown up, adverts about buggies, LEGO whatever are irrelevant to our lives! I use adverts as an opportunity to go put the kettle on! Sometimes less is more! Now it’s just overkill!

Yeah I don't understand why it's not working either, it's SO annoying.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 14/10/2025 17:38

I was using an Ad Blocker then using the hide distracting content on safari to get rid of the please disable your ad blocker pop-up. It worked fine.

I’ve since got a VPN and it’s heavenly, no ads at all.

How much is your VPN costing you? & which one are you using? I'm tempted!

LemonJellyLegs · 16/10/2025 21:31

The phone app has no ads/very few ads and if you use Microsoft Edge it's fine

chasingpavementsnotpayments · 17/10/2025 05:58

@BeckyAMumsnet on my android phone I'm now getting whole screen sized ads repeating as scroll to next post. Plus the awful top of page video ads.

Just makes the user experience awful. Awful enough that I leave MN for good.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/10/2025 06:08

No issues on the app

not sure why so many don’t want the app. Yes it took me a while to get used to years ago but it is way much better

faster
few ads

only quibble is that I can’t send messages and can only like a post v heart or clap

doctorsleep · 17/10/2025 06:56

@Blondeshavemorefun with the app, you give permission for even more tracking. Unless MN discloses more about the immense tracking they do, you can think the app is likely to track your location, what you do on other apps and so on. It can track what you do during day. When you wake up, what do you look at when you wake up, what other website you look at before and after MN, ....
Apps can do all sorts of tracking, even between apps, say what you order on Ubereats for example. I would love to hear from MN the level and number of tracking it allows (sells) for the app, because it isn’t clear.
However, given the very high number of trackers MN allows on its website compared to Reddit, I think it is very likely there are a lot more on the app.
In the past MN has defended its tracking saying it was less than other websites. Well MN has currently 17 companies tracking you as you read this, Reddit has zero.

No wonder, the website is slow, computer overheats, battery drains.

If you have an iPhone go into privacy and security settings and turn off tracking

I’m using Nord, it works out around 3.80 per month. I paid £100ish for 27 months. It can run on up to 10 devices.

It’s amazing and I’m really pleased with it. Been meaning to do it for a while, mostly for protection on any kind of public WiFi and for travelling.

I’m usually just connected to a server in the UK. I’ve not experienced battery draining or speed reduction.

i need to look into it 😊

Video ads at the top are super annoying. Moving things...I'm canning the site for a while. Too annoying

Memorable · 18/10/2025 08:08

I completely agree with the op. I thought it was my old phone but got a new one recently and the site froze it. I’ve switched to the app now which seems rather better although I don’t prefer the layout at all tbh

MultiFucktional · 22/10/2025 14:59

A week on from the OP and it’s still no better

HothouseFlower · 22/10/2025 15:37

You need the DuckDuckGo browser. You can have more than one browser so you could just use it for Mumsnet. All the ads, videos, the flickering and the flashing has just gone. The sidebars are calm, empty and grey, just how I like it!

You don't get the fake thread titles in the list either "Ad - sponsored by Mumsnet" (or whatever it says). The space is just blank.

ILoveLukeAlderton · 22/10/2025 15:53

I appreciate the suggestions of other browsers etc but why the hell is it up to us the fix this by using a different method of accessing the site?!
