MNHQ, you know why.

I find I’m spending only about 10% of the time actually reading a thread. The rest is clicking fucking x’s to close down ads, trying to stop the glaring, moving ads at the top, scrolling past mid-thread ads that go on for ages, or scrolling past ‘promoted by’ bollocks that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic that you’re in.

This site is now like Reach media.

Such a shame.

Just adding my voice to say that something seriously needs to be done, if you don’t want to see a mass exodus. There is a lot of goodwill here (I’ve been around for decades, I’m sure you can check). But fuck me, if you don’t tone down the ad invasion, me & many many others will be off.

Still, I’m sure the shareholders are happy, eh.

The latest thing is I keep get adds that cover the page, they don't load properly so i can't even see what the ad is but it comes up and covers most of the page. There's been issues for yonks though, there was a long stint of (I assume) the ads crashing the site constantly - that went away and then came back and then went again.

MultiFucktional · 14/10/2025 16:17

Add in all the times the site crashes and reloads, whilst the annoying adds are struggling to load, and there are times the site is unusable.
I’m hardly on here at all these days, not a bad thing I suppose, but a bit pointless for the advertisers if we aren’t even here to see their ads!

fatphalange · 14/10/2025 16:22

I don’t get any of that. Are you on the app?

HollyhockDays · 14/10/2025 16:22

The app doesn’t have any of that (yet!).

scalt · 14/10/2025 16:23

The moving ads at the side are really distracting. I think their use has increased by stealth, we've been boiling-frogged into tolerating them.

Yeah, I know, I should pay, then I won't see them, Mumsnet needs revenue, etc. But as a matter of principle, I avoid "subscribing" to anything, if I can possibly avoid it. These things add up, and it's so easy to get sucked in, and get pestered for paying for more.

HumerousHumous · 14/10/2025 16:24

As above, try the app. There are still ads but it’s a neater, tidier experience than via web browser. We also have an ad blocker. Is that an option?

susey · 14/10/2025 16:26

Sadly I agree. I can't read it on my phone at night now because of the video ads in the bar at the top. They are too bright and busy.

Mumsnet was a godsend when I was in labour (really!), miscarriage, early newborn days. But now even viewing and writing this reply has been difficult owing to the huge animated adverts. End of an era.

Falalfn · 14/10/2025 16:27

I don’t like the ads/promotions that appear in the list of active conversations as though they are threads.

Firstly it’s a bit dishonest as it’s set up like that as though a mumsnetter had posted it - and secondly it asserts something which can’t be argued with because you can’t post on the thing that looks like a thread. Because it isn’t. It’s an ad.

Londonmummy66 · 14/10/2025 16:36

Since the invasion of the video ads I've resized my word window to cover them up - I didn't bother when they were static so the advertisers are really losing out.

Memeyoulater · 14/10/2025 16:41

Absolutely 100 % Annoying beyond belief.
i don't want an app either thankyou MN.

TeddySchnauzer · 14/10/2025 16:44

I don’t get any of this on the iPhone app????

JohnTheRevelator · 14/10/2025 16:47

I've had issues, not so much with ads but with getting the edit button to work. Also, the bar along the bottom that has the 'I'm on, 'watching' etc on is often missing.

BeckyAMumsnet · 14/10/2025 16:47

Hello and thanks for taking the time to post. We are very aware that this has been incredibly frustrating for lots of users, and it’s absolutely not the experience we want anyone to have on Mumsnet.

We’ve been working closely with our ad tech partners to pin down the cause of the intrusive ad issues, and we’ve now blocked the ad units we believe were responsible. Some browsers can hang on to old ad data, which means a few users may still see the problem until their cache updates.

If you can, please clear your browser cache so you’re seeing the latest version of the site. On Chrome, that’s:
Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data → Cached images and files → Clear data, then restart Chrome and reload Mumsnet.

We know it’s more annoyance, but it really does help us confirm the fix is working. We’re genuinely sorry for how bad this experience has been and we’re taking this seriously. Thanks for sticking with us while we get it sorted.

AutumnCosy2025 · 14/10/2025 16:47

Yeah the video ads are beyond fucking annoying.

im still really struggling with the 'new' contrast making the screen too bright.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/10/2025 16:50

I find the fake AI generated threads to be more of a problem than the adverts.

AutumnCosy2025 · 14/10/2025 16:50

@BeckyAMumsnet I'm on safari. I'm not clearing my cache yet again to try to improve my MN experience as it messes with stuff elsewhere.

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 14/10/2025 16:51

I can no longer read MN on my iPad , the pages show the OP then no replies , just ads or the the word “ advertisement “ with nothing there .
Strangely it works fine on my iPhone.

Darragon · 14/10/2025 16:54

I mean, really. This is my screen rn (time difference). They cover the screen and don’t even load.

Even if the ads were less intrusive, it’s the sheer number of them. Too much. Far FAR too much.

And I, like I suspect many others, am so fucked off with them that even if I registered what they were actually advertising (which only happens when I’m too slow to the close button) would actively avoid that product anyhow.

I get it, MN needs revenue. But the balance with user experience is so incredibly far off for me.

(And to PP, genuinely appreciate the advice but I don’t want another app.)

CrystalSingerFan · 14/10/2025 17:14

I'm on a Windows 11 laptop, running a Firefox browser, possibly with adblockers. I have none of these problems. (Which is why I don't bother with Mumsnet on my Android phone.)

Although, a quick Google suggests there are steps I can take that might help. Can anyone report if these are useful?

Shitmonger · 14/10/2025 17:14

I use an ad blocker and disable the Mumsnet popup complaining about me using an ad blocker. It’s much nicer this way.

Newdoggo · 14/10/2025 17:27

I read on my laptop through duckduckgo - no issues with ads

JeffTheSquirrel · 14/10/2025 17:28

I did use an ad blocker, but I only get a few goes to ignore the pop up now, before I need to disable it to continue.

Not sure I can be arsed to swap around various ad blockers.

Parky04 · 14/10/2025 17:32

I use the app and have no problems.

Wontbackdown · 14/10/2025 17:33

Whatever I click on my laptop, it takes me to Aldi!!!
Unless i scroll to the very bottom of the page and click there instead. Crazy and annoying.
