MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

The copy and paste is now working. However it copies the entire post not just the part I want to comment on, so I may as well just quote the whole postHmm

Yes same here. How can I copy just the section I want to quote?

You can’t. Copy the whole thing, paste, delete the bits you dont want

ErrolTheDragon · 09/04/2025 13:18

giveupmengetacat · 09/04/2025 11:31

And I still can't see any formatting... That last bit doesn't show as bold for me in the app.

What OS? I can see my bolding of the bit I edited in both iPad and iPhone apps

JaneJeffer · 09/04/2025 13:18

I can’t copy anything. It doesn’t work.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 09/04/2025 13:57

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 31/03/2025 14:19

I’m now having problems posting - if you are writing a post the ‘comments’ box widens to accommodate your typing, but it stays thin if you paste something you’ve copied from somewhere else and it’s then also hard to move around.

And if I come out, say to check something, I can’t then go in and post my comments, or type anything else - the post button has vanished and all I see is a single line comments box.
And of course I can’t copy what I’ve typed either…

Quoting my own post because it is happening again. This is the second version of this post - I went to get the screen shot then couldn’t complete the post, so you’ll be getting 2 from me in quick succession.

Post # 2 showing when I can, and cannot, post

I'm on Android. I can see it on my Lenovo tablet which I assume is also Android, so it's strange.

I can’t edit the copied section though.

Longma · 13/04/2025 20:21

I like some aspects: edit, filter, preview, etc BUT the app is not almost entirely useless for me due to the font size - it’s tiny and much smaller than the font size in any other app - hence not wanting to change the settings on my actual phone or iPad., and you can’t pinch to zoom in/out on the app so that’s not a way round it either. And my eye sight is pretty good!

The other thing I don’t like is that when I post a reply it then takes me all the way back to the end of the thread, rather than returning me to where I was. I can bookmark before posting, but it’s a bit of a pain.

Yes after I’ve quoted someone I want to be returned to where I was

luckbug · 13/04/2025 22:39

The font is really off putting. Bad enough to put an end to my mumsnet addiction.

AllLopsided · 14/04/2025 15:12

Horrible! I didn't see this post and updated anyway. Now I can barely read anything - it's too small and the font is horrible. I definitely won't be able to read at all with the screen dimmed at night. It's not possible to copy anything except within my own post. Where have the options to choose our own colour scheme gone? Now completely confused about who is who because my posts are the colour the OP's used to be! I much preferred white text on the coloured background for the page with the thread titles. Why would you 'improve' things when in fact you are taking choices away? Please don't give me any platitudes about adapting to change and taking time to get used to new things!

Edited to add... currently on iPad, there is no chance I will be able to read anything at all on my phone without a magnifying glass, so that's the end of reading Mumsnet in medical waiting rooms twice a week (once the update is forced, which I presume it will be eventually).

On my phone the font is simply too small to even bother with now.
The only reason my iPad is manageable, though still too small for comfort, is because I have the biggest sized screen of an iPad Pro!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2025 07:47

This thread now has instructions how to increase the text size just for MN on an iPhone via accessibility settings. It may be useful as a workaround but clearly if people are needing to alter just MN it is not in line with what other apps are doing.
I reckon they may just need to make the text size the same as they’re using for thread titles. (With the text at a nice size the thread headings are too big.)

BeckyAMumsnet · 15/04/2025 15:39

We've just rolled out a behind-the-scenes update to our iOS and Android apps. If you're already using the latest version (45.0.12), you don’t need to update through the app store - the changes will come through automatically after you fully close and reopen the app. This update brings back the ability to bookmark posts and take other actions when filtering by a user, something we know some users found useful and had asked to see return.

Thanks to those who shared their thoughts. We’re continuing to work through all of the feedback and make adjustments where we can.

How is it going on the capitalisation at the start of a new line @AmeliaPMumsnet?

theres Something else weird…

if you start a new post, delete back to nothing and begin the sentence again, the first word doesn’t get capitalised but the second one does - as shown above, I didn’t use the caps key at all when typing that!

Totally agree. Few minutes a day now. The refresh remains non existent. Shame but perhaps a way to clear us out

Yes, I had that too on a few, seemingly random topics, including Work. It seems to have righted itself now. iPad with latest update.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 19/04/2025 19:35

dear Mumsnet, I am still having the problem that if I happen to go away from the entry box when I am posting, I can then neither post nor edit what I have written. I wasted a lot of time today with this problem. I’m on an iPad. I don’t know how to record what happens, so if you could let me know how, that would be helpful.

I ran into this early on. It happens if you use the little keyboard key in the bottom right corner to stow the comment box. Try to avoid doing that, instead pull down on the little bar at the top of the screen.
