MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 14:07

Update! The new app is now available on iOS 🎉

Thank you very much for the feedback @perihelpneeded. Let us know if you have any other thoughts as you use them more!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 14:57

@Crikeyalmighty Yep, definitely! This is likely happening because the App Store takes a bit of time to update fully.

Once you've searched for 'Mumsnet' in the App Store, select the app itself rather than tapping the 'Open' button - this will take you to the store listing. If your device recognises that the update is available, you should see an 'Update' button.

If the 'Update' button isn’t there yet, you may need to give it a bit more time to appear.

Let us know how you get on!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 16:30

Hi all,

Thank you for your feedback on flip! We're keeping track of everything and will make sure to address any issues. Please do keep any thoughts or feedback coming.

@PotterHead1985 Thanks for getting in touch about this. This shouldn't be happening—could you please share a screenshot with us so we can dig into it a bit more?

@mathanxiety There will be an option to reset your password when you try to log in to the new app. If you're currently logged in on the web, you can reset your password here: https://www.mumsnet.com/settings/password.
If you're logged out on web and need to recover your password, you can do so here: https://www.mumsnet.com/forgot-password. If you run into any issues, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], and we'll do our best to help!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 17:11

@ErrolTheDragon Thanks for flagging this and trying to recreate it—it's really helpful! If it happens again, would you be able to share a screenshot with us here so we can see exactly what's going on? Or, if you’re able to capture it in a screen recording, could you please send it to us via email at [email protected]?

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit Your device may just need a little more time to update. Could you try searching for 'Mumsnet' in the App Store and selecting the app itself rather than tapping the 'Open' button in the search results? This will take you to the store listing. If your device recognises that the update is available, you should see an 'Update' button.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 13/03/2025 13:25

Hi all,

We're working through all of your messages and feedback now, so I'll respond bit by bit to make sure I cover everything.

@ErrolTheDragon Thanks so much for the screenshots and for walking us through this. Just to confirm—when you close the keyboard using the keyboard button, are you then unable to open the reply box again by tapping on it? The reply box is designed to be dragged down to close. In the meantime, you could try collapsing it this way while we look into the issue 🙏

@PotterHead1985 Thanks for sharing screenshots of the issue. This looks quite sporadic. Could you let me know what device you're using and whether your text size is set larger than the default in your device settings? That will help us investigate further. Also, could you try deleting and reinstalling the app to see if that makes a difference?

@giveupmengetacat Would you be able to share which device you're using and, if you're comfortable, send a screen recording of this happening? If so, please email it to [email protected]—that would be really helpful!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 13/03/2025 14:24

Hi @lakecomomo If you're viewing a list of threads (like Active or a topic), you can hide a thread by selecting the three dots next to the title and choosing 'Hide' from the menu. You can also hide a thread while viewing it by selecting the three dots on the OP post and then choosing 'Hide'.

@renomeno The only way to change the text size right now is through your device settings. It's helpful to know you find it too large. Could you please let us know what device you're using?

@Piggywaspushed The thread list you’re referring to wasn’t the main screen before, but you can access it from the majority of screens by selecting 'I'm On' in the bottom navigation bar. You can flip a thread by selecting the icon in the top right corner with two arrows pointing up and down.

@TianasBayou Thanks for the feedback. We're tracking everything and will action as much as possible. You can turn off post previews by toggling the setting at the bottom of the preview screen or in Talk Settings under 'Post previews'.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 14/03/2025 16:55

Hi all,

Just to clarify, this isn’t a test app, so we’re unable to remove people from using it, and the old app is no longer available for download. But we’re noting all your feedback and will be working hard to fix any tecnical issues as soon as possible.

We're also working on changes to flipping and how threads appear once flipped, based on your feedback. We’ll be rolling these out as soon as possible.

Meantime thanks for bearing with us.

BeckyAMumsnet · 15/03/2025 16:51

jeffgoldblum · 15/03/2025 12:57

Me too! ( not a subscriber though!)
is there a way to go back to the original one?
my phone updated it automatically so it wasn’t my choice!

We're unable to revert anyone to the old app and it's no longer available for download.

We are monitoring all feedback and working through it so please do continue to give your input. You can also contact us directly from the app by clicking 'App feedback' in Settings.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 18/03/2025 13:55

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thank you so much for all your feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time to share what’s working (and what’s not). Apologies that we’re not jumping in to reply as often as usual – the team is flat out working through the issues you’re raising. But we wanted to give you a quick update on where we’re at:

  • Flip: We’re aiming to release an update in the next day or so that removes the extra step when flipping – we know that’s been frustrating, so thank you for your patience.
  • Truncating the OP when flipping: We’re also working on a fix that will mean you’ll only see the thread title when you've flipped a thread, rather than the full opening post. We'll release this as soon as it's ready.
  • Copy and paste: Yep, this one is super annoying – we totally get it. It’s proving tricky because of the framework we’ve used for the app, but we’re actively working on a fix and hope to have it sorted ASAP.
  • Text size: We’ve had a lot of comments on this. The text size is currently set to Apple’s recommended size – but because many apps use smaller text, lots of people have their phone settings bumped up, which is making our text look even bigger. We’re looking into what we can tweak here, so any extra feedback is really helpful.
  • Dark mode: We’re scoping out how quickly we can get that into the app.

Thanks again for bearing with us while we work through these – we’ll keep the updates coming as we get fixes live.

KatyMumsnet · 19/03/2025 10:33

Hi everyone, thanks for your patience while we take in your feedback and make improvements! We’ve just released a new version of the iOS app with the following updates:

  • Removed the extra step when flipping a thread - for now, the OP will stay open at the top, but we’re working on collapsing it so you’ll just see the title when you flip.
  • You can now remove deleted threads from your watching list.
  • Fixed an issue where threads weren’t always opening in the right spot when accessed via bookmarks, notifications, etc. This should now be more consistent, though we’re still fine-tuning it.

To get these updates, you'll need to update the app via the app store.

We’re continuing to review feedback and make changes, and will post updates here.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 10:45

perihelpneeded · 19/03/2025 01:04

@AmeliaPMumsnetany news on if a fix is being worked on to be able to remove threads from watched once they have been deleted? Ive got 2 threads now that were removed, in my watchlist that I cannot unwatch nor hide. I imagine eventually this list will just keep growing so would love a way to remove them, you used to be able to swipe and unwatch even after they were deleted but now they are stuck on my list.

Hi @perihelpneeded,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We're just wrapping up some testing on Android now that will allow us to release an update to resolve the issue you're experiencing with deleted threads in your watching list. Once the update is live, you'll be able to remove these deleted threads. We'll let you know as soon as it's available.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 16:40

Hi all,

I’m working through some of your messages now and will respond shortly.

We’ve just pushed an update on iOS (only, for now) that includes another change to flip: the OP’s post will now be truncated when you flip a thread, which should make it easier to navigate. You may need to quit the app completely and open it again for this change to come into effect.

We’re working on bringing all the updates released on iOS to Android as soon as possible and hope to release them imminently.

Thanks again for your patience while we work through everything.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 17:05

Hi @giveupmengetacat,

Thank you for your feedback on bookmarks and opening the menu on your tablet — this is really useful context, and we’ll take it away and see what we can do. Would you be able to take a screen recording of the issues you’re having with replying and closing images and send it to [email protected]? This would be a huge help as we investigate.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 17:13

Hi @Queenanne20,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this! We’ve been trying to recreate the issue with mentions, and we’ve only just managed to see it ourselves today. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. We’re looking into whether there’s anything we can do on our end, but it seems like this might be a very specific bug affecting certain Android devices, which could be outside our control. That said, we’ll do our best to find a solution and we are looking in to it!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 20/03/2025 17:19

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2025 17:09

Thanks. I’m seeing the collapsed OP post, which is good except I don’t think the logic of when it’s collapsed vs open is quite right. I think it should be open when the posts are oldest first, and collapsed when its newest first. I’m seeing it the other way round, I’m not sure if that’s because of which way I had the thread when I last looked at it or because of my settings.

Hi @ErrolTheDragon,

We've made it so the OP post is truncated when the thread is set to the opposite of your default sorting. So, if your default is 'Oldest first', the OP will be truncated when you switch to 'Newest first', and vice versa.

We did this so that users who usually view threads* *'Newest first' don’t have to expand the OP every time — especially if they haven’t read the thread before.

Hope that makes sense, but let us know if you have any questions, thoughts, or feedback.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 22/03/2025 10:44

Good morning all,

Thanks for your patience. We released an update on Android this morning that includes the same fixes we rolled out on iOS earlier this week. It might take a little while for the update to come through on your device. The update includes the following:

  • Removed the extra step when flipping a thread.
  • Truncated the OP when you flip a thread.
  • You can now remove deleted threads from your watching list.
  • Fixed an issue where threads weren’t always opening in the right spot when accessed via bookmarks, notifications, etc. This should now be more consistent, though we’re still fine-tuning it.

We’re continuing to review all of your feedback and hope to make changes soon to address problems with text size and more.

I know many of you have mentioned missing the ability to select text from a post to partially quote it and capitalisation after full stops. The framework we’re using for the new app doesn’t make this easy to do, but we’re actively looking at solutions.

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 12:12

jeffgoldblum · 22/03/2025 14:15

And a quick niggle ! Does anyone else find that when they post a comment they are immediately flung back to the beginning of a thread?
I have to come out and go back in to get back to where I was!

Hi. Could I check whether you have the thread flipped, which might be causing you to be taken back to the start after posting? If that’s not the case, is this happening on every thread, or only on certain ones?

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 12:14

Violashifts · 22/03/2025 18:10

Can we have a bookmark on the main post? I keep mixing up my thanks and bookmarks.

Would you be able to explain a little more what you mean by this so we can understand what's going on for you? Thank you!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 12:16

ApolloandDaphne · 23/03/2025 12:16

I feel like a broken record but I still can't type a reply on the app on my iPad. I've deleted the app and reinstalled and I have signed out and signed in again. Still no joy.

I’m sorry this is happening. Would you be able to take a screen recording of what happens when you try to reply on your iPad and send it to us at [email protected]? If you could record from the moment you open the app until the reply doesn’t work, that would be incredibly helpful, as it will help us recreate the issue. Thank you!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 12:18

Tallisker · 24/03/2025 10:07

In addition to Magnolia’s post about links to other threads going to the website from the app, links to The Times and The Telegraph for example now only go to the main websites, even though I am a subscriber and have both apps on my phone. The old app links gave me the option to open them in the papers’ apps. iPhone 15, most recent iOS.

Tallisker and others — thanks for flagging the issues with opening links. We’re looking into it.

For instances where you’re taken to websites like The Times or The Telegraph, you should see an option (either at the top or bottom of the screen) to open the link in your default browser instead. This should take you to your browser, where (depending on your device and settings) you can choose to open the link in the corresponding app or view it directly in your browser — where you may already be logged in.

I appreciate this isn’t a solution, but it might help while we investigate. Thanks for your patience!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 12:20

jeffgoldblum · 24/03/2025 12:17

@AmeliaPMumsnetno I don’t use flip because it’s too complicated for me!!😳 just bookmark, it has happened on almost all the threads I’m on .

Thanks for this, it's super useful.

Apologies as I know this is frustrating but would you be able to take a screen recording of this happening and send it to us at [email protected]? That'll help us look into it as we aren't able to recreate it on our side. Would you also be able to share with me what kind of device you're using?

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 15:44

Resilience · 24/03/2025 14:44

Had a few posts now where the app has frozen mid reply and then when it unfreezes it has completely lost my reply.

Could you please try quitting the app completely and opening it again from scratch and seeing if this issue persists? We pushed out a minor update early this afternoon, and restarting the app should ensure the update was properly received.

If the freezing keeps happening, could you let me know what device you're using? And if it’s persistent and you feel comfortable doing so, could you send us a screen recording of it happening to [email protected]? Thank you!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 24/03/2025 16:19

PotterHead1985 · 12/03/2025 19:57

So I don't wanna log out to show the log in. But here's a couple instances where the words are cut off. And the time of posting.

Hi @PotterHead1985, I'm just looking into this some more. Could you please let me know what you have your font style set to in your device settings? Thank you!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 27/03/2025 13:56

giveupmengetacat · 26/03/2025 23:22

Any update on the bookmark issue for Android?

I've also noticed that text formatting like bold and italic isn't showing up on the app. Gets confusing when someone has quoted something by bolding it instead of using the quote feature, as it all looks the same.

Hi @giveupmengetacat,

Just to make sure I’m following correctly—are you referring to the bookmark issue you flagged previously, where you aren’t taken to the post you’ve bookmarked? If so, we’re aware of this and are looking into it. We’ll let you know as soon as we have any updates.

Regarding the issue you mentioned with text formatting (bold, italics, etc.) not showing up, we haven’t been able to reproduce this on our side. Could you share a link to a thread or post where you’ve seen this issue so we can take a look?

Thanks!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 27/03/2025 13:57

Violashifts · 27/03/2025 04:19

Also if you comment it taked you to tbe bottom of the page and you lose your page. The iOS app keeps crashing too and freezes.

Hi @Violashifts,

Thanks for sharing more details about your bookmark feedback. We’ve heard similar reports from other users, and we’re going to look into it.

I also noticed you mentioned that the app is crashing and freezing for you. To help us investigate, could you share the following details?

  • The model of your device
  • The iOS version your device is running (you can find this in Settings under "About")
  • If the issue happens consistently, could you describe what you were doing just before the app froze or crashed?
  • If you’re comfortable, could you also share a screen recording of the issue via email at [email protected]?

Thanks!
