MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!

AmeliaPMumsnet · 12/03/2025 10:13

Hi all,

The new version of our mobile app is now available on Android and will be available on iOS over the next couple of days. All users will be logged out when the update happens and will need to log in again to access the new app. You can continue to use the current app if your device doesn’t automatically update (some do), but we’ll be stopping support for this version at the end of the month, so we’d recommend downloading the new version from the App store.

We know this has been a long time coming for some, and we really appreciate your patience. Thank you to everyone who has been part of the beta testing group, your input has been invaluable. This is very much a first release that won’t include everything we want to include just yet. But we’re going to be making ongoing improvements, and we’ll continue listening to your feedback to shape future updates.

What’s new?
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new app:

  • Nested quoting – You can now quote a post that already contains a quote—just like on the website—making it easier to keep up with discussions.
  • AIBU? polls – You can now vote on AIBU? polls and even create your own.
  • Thanks – Show your appreciation for helpful posts by thanking other users. You’ll also be able to see when someone thanks you!
  • Edit your posts – You can now edit your posts from the app without heading to the website.
  • See all posts by the OP – Android users can now filter posts to only see replies from the original poster, making it easier to follow their updates in a thread.
  • Follow topics – Curate your own personalised feed by following your favourite topics, so you can easily find the discussions that matter most to you.
  • More images – You can now upload more images in a single post than before, making it easier to share moments and information.
  • GIFs – Sometimes words aren’t enough—now you can post GIFs to react, express yourself, or just add some fun to conversations!

What’s coming next?
We know there’s still work to do. Some features you’ve asked for aren’t in this first version, but that doesn’t mean we’re ignoring them. Here’s what we’re already working on for future updates:

  • Links via emails – Email links will currently open in your browser to start with but we are investigating forcing them to open in the app.
  • Dark mode – A long-requested feature! We’re working on bringing dark mode to the app for a more comfortable viewing experience, especially at night.
  • More reactions – Right now, you can thank posts, but we’re planning to introduce more reaction options so they match what’s available on the website.
  • Better push notifications – We’re making push notifications more useful and adding different types of alerts, so it’s easier to stay updated on the things you care about most.
  • Notifications centre – We’ll be introducing a dedicated notifications hub in the app, making it easier to catch up on all your notifications in one place.
  • PMs – We know many of you have asked for PMs to be included in the app. This is on our radar, but it will take some time to get right. We’ll keep you updated on our plans!

Let us know what you think - your input really helps to fix any initial glitches and help us keep improving. And thanks again for sticking with us - we can’t wait for you to try the new app! 💜

Oh I like it! Looks much clearer

lakecomomo · 12/03/2025 21:04

@AmeliaPMumsnetthanks for the information. Can I just check, when hiding a thread do I need to click on the dots by the thread title and then go down to the bottom left of the screen to hide the thread? If so, when the old app had one swipe, it feels really unwieldy!

ApolloandDaphne · 13/03/2025 05:36

I don't like the extra step in the flip either.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/03/2025 05:48

Also, it doesn't look like you can flip OPs posts now which is a pain when you are on a thread with many posts from the OP and want to see the newest ones quickly.

renomeno · 13/03/2025 06:27

Can the user change the font size? It’s too big for me and makes it look/feel clunky!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 13/03/2025 06:30

I’ve lost all my followed threads (of which I had quite a few) - any way to retrieve those?

edited to say I’ve found it, panic over Blush

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 06:50

Explain to me like I'm a toddler how to flip?

I don't want all the following crap. I want the threads I'm on to be the main thing I see.

I hate the whole look of it. Very cluttered.

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 07:02

I’m not keen. Too bright. Too spaced out.
First letter of a sentence doesn’t capitalise.unless I put a space after the full stop.that’s weird and irritating. What a mess!the pedants will have a field day. And I don’t have a full stop on the abc keyboard?

and the flip. If I’m flipping, obviously I want the opposite of what I currently have. The extra step is redundant. Will play more and report back.

what! I have an extra step to preview my post too? Why are you wasting my time? Has anyone actually tried posting on iOS? The autocomplete is also annoyingly wrong every time.

Angry
TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 07:04

can I get rid of the OP? Don’t want to scroll down past it to get to new posts even when I’ve flipped the thread

Dunkou · 13/03/2025 07:11

Agreed the extra step on the flip is annoying. And it’s too longwinded to hide a thread. On the whole though I like it, once I found the option of the compact view.

YouLookLikeClaraBow · 13/03/2025 07:15

For me, I've now lost all the threads I was watching as they're in a weird order now :(

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 07:21

This is an unnecessary addition (That’s all folks!) just need a readily accessible refresh button.

MNHQ: Our new mobile apps are out now!
Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 07:23

I also don't want notifications on my home screen of my phone. Go away.

giveupmengetacat · 13/03/2025 07:28

I did feel like the old app mirrored the web version more. Feels far too different now.

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 07:28

Turn them off in settings (I think)

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 07:28

marvellous it’s posting twice now!

piscofrisco · 13/03/2025 07:33

I don’t like the flip either. Better before. Everything else is good once you are used to it

ErrolTheDragon · 13/03/2025 07:42

oh…this is bad…I often want to copy and paste just a small part of a post rather than quoting the whole thing if it’s long. I don’t seem to be able to select text and c&p it (except in the post I’m currently writing of course).
And also can’t select a word and use the normal look up/search web/translate tools. That’s a significant loss of functionality IMO.

WarriorN · 13/03/2025 07:54

this is soooo different it’s like moving from Microsoft hard drive to Google docs and I’m really visually confused Confused

thank god the old emojis exist

couldn’t the layout of the old app remain?

the words are so big now too, but concerned ppl can see what I’m writing over my shoulder…! On a train for example —might help my spelling—

WarriorN · 13/03/2025 07:56

The sort results button used to just flip the thread. That was much more accessible

harijes · 13/03/2025 07:56

Agree re flip, really clumsy.

Also seems no way to flip OP posts. So if I pop in for a quick check, would filter to OP posts and then flip to see newest. That’s gone.

it’s not holding threads either. So I could have one open in watching. One open in topics. One open in active. Now it takes you back to main page when you exit that tab

WarriorN · 13/03/2025 07:57

Flip isn’t working at all as far as I can see

WarriorN · 13/03/2025 07:57

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 06:50

yes cluttered

previous app was very simple and sleek

TianasBayou · 13/03/2025 08:19

Too much scrolling and clicking needed now.

reduce paragraph spacing to tighten up the white space?

setting for each thread should stay independent eg a watched thread is filtered by OP and newest first. One from Active would be OP first and oldest posts so it can be read from the start. Then if I decide to watch it I would flip and bookmark and I don’t need to see the OP.

i appreciate everyone uses it differently but my way seems pretty common.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/03/2025 09:23

Links to other sites won't open. I get an error messages and some guff about security.
