Shouldn’t the clap and the thumbs up be the other way around?

Annoys me that the clap reaction is for ‘thanks’. Who claps to say thank you?? I more imagine people clapping in agreement a la Question Time / Rikki Lake. And then the thumbs up for ‘thanks’ like someone has answered your question on WhatsApp or whatever.

Just a minor but frequent gripe. Surely lots of people at MNHQ agree with me 😂

I agree with you Op. I like the feature, but it is the wrong way round for me.

Rebeccaatmumsnet · 28/02/2025 11:55

Hey @pearbottomjeans,

Thanks so much for getting in touch. This is really interesting feedback and we'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see if other users agree/disagree.

MorganMankini · 28/02/2025 11:57

I agree! Have to check which is the right one every time. Probably just as confusing to change it now though...

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 28/02/2025 11:59

I only use the thumbs up one, to mean I agree.
I don't use the applauding one.

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 11:59

I’m clapping you all to say thanks 😆

OP posts:
VeryconfusedNana · 28/02/2025 11:59

I agree with the Op.

NameChangedOfc · 28/02/2025 11:59

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE 👏👏👏👏

AlteredStater · 28/02/2025 12:00

I agree too OP! It confuses me every time!

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 12:00

I can see your point; but I also don't think it's necessarily wrong as it is.

I'd like to see something suitable for "Wow!" and/or to sympathise with a post about something sad or horrific that has happened to the OP or somebody they know/have heard of.

Say if somebody posts a jaw-dropping story about a monarch-tier CF, how can/should you react without sounding flippant, inappropriate or as though you've misconstrued it as though the OP/poster is the arch-CF?!

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 28/02/2025 12:01

Gonna start giving my husband a round of applause as a thank you for giving me dinner. 😄

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 12:04

There's clearly dissent and/or confusion about what the emoji mean, as I've had a lot of mixed ones: i.e. I post something that (I think) is amusing or jokey, and might get at least one of each kind of response emoji (a full house?!).

I bet he'd prefer a round of melty cheese toasties!

Huckleberries · 28/02/2025 12:07

Agree

tbh clapping only works if you think the poster has said something fantastic, in which case, you'd probably say so.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 28/02/2025 12:07

I agree with the OP. 👏

I like the idea of a "wow" button.

However, above all, I really want a "disagree" option. Or a WTF option would do it.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 12:08

If someone writes a really good, well-argued post that makes excellent points, I want to clap it but that's 'thanks' which doesn't fit, yet merely agreeing with it doesn't seem like it's offering enough appreciation. My finger hovers between the two!

I agree OP, they are very counterintuitive

Edit aaaah didn’t mean to quote the OP 🙄

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 12:10

It's probably for the best that there aren't any negative ones available, but I could often find a use for a 'politely disagree' option too.

Maybe a thumbs-down, or a palm-down waving hand. An arse emoji to signify "I very much do not respect your ill-reasoned opinion" might lead to far too many bunfights, though!

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 12:11

How sad that autocorrect tried to change my last post from 'bunfights' to 'gunfights'. What have we become?!

That would be devastating.

It's bad enough when people vote 'YABU' on polls but then don't comment as to why they are disagreeing.

Rebeccaatmumsnet · 28/02/2025 12:12

Thanks all for your contributions! I'm reading them all in the background as people comment, and they are really useful. 🌟

ABunchOfBadBitches · 28/02/2025 12:13

Yep it makes no sense

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 28/02/2025 12:13

Maybe a "Chapeau!" option for an outstandingly excellent post - with somebody raising their hat aloft?!

Natsku · 28/02/2025 12:14

Agree, clapping is not right for thanks.

Comedycook · 28/02/2025 12:15

I thought the same thing but assumed it was just me

butterflymum · 28/02/2025 12:17

The clap symbol for me is "well said". Have used it several times recently, as no better option available, even though it is worded "thanks". To me, 'I agree' would be a tick or handshake symbol. The thumb up, I would generally think of as a more casual 'okay' or 'that's good'.
