Can we have some sort of 'warning' for people who repeatedly post without reading all of OP's posts?

In the last 3 months or so I think this has gotten so much worse. Not only does it fill up the thread with pointless posts that have been addressed (sometimes days or weeks beforehand), it can actually be quite horrible - in one case a woman being slagged off because a few posters didn't read her sympathetic circumstances.

Could there be a 'report' reason just for this, and perhaps the posts don't need to be removed (but they could be?) but the user asked to 'see all' of OP's posts in future and shown how to do it? And repeat offenders suspended....?!

Or could it even be a note before posting if you go straight to post on a page where you couldn't possibly have read all of OP's posts?

I know it's easy to do, and obviously sometimes OP will update while people are in the process of typing and posting or they haven't refreshed. But when it keeps happening it's really frustrating on a thread and good helpful posts get missed in all the 'OP has actually updated to say this' 'well how was I supposed to know' derails.

'Cancel the cheque!!!' is still as much of an issue now as it was back then!

Cancel the cheque.

Fnar fnar fnar...

IdylicDay · 02/01/2025 12:06

I 100% agree, its my pet hate on here. There needs to be a huge emphasis on the See next/See all at the end of the OP first post. People don't seem to have even noticed that function exists. Mumsnet need to really highlight, bold and underline that bit and make it very focal and clear.

EmpressaurusKitty · 02/01/2025 12:12

I don’t see it happening but yes, it’s a great idea.

CatsorDogsrule · 02/01/2025 12:15

The Android App still doesn't have the See All or Next function, so not everyone can do this. (Not that I'm a guilty party, as I use a Web page to view MN for this and the voting function, which I assume is also still missing.)

I also think we shouldn't be able to quote the original post.

YES! That drives me mad 😡

Indeed.
Seeing this really enrages me. I don't know why it makes me so angry.
But it does.
Especially if it's the first person who is responding.

NotVeryFunny · 02/01/2025 13:51

Can we not. Posting on forums.is meant to be a fun or enjoyable activity. It's not a job. People need to chill out about others "not doing social media correctly".

This is not social media (twitter, facebook, instagram) this is a website messageboard and when someone posts without checking to see if there was an outcome or saying something that is pretty irrelevant as the situation has moved on, and OP/or other posters have to stop and tell the poster that, it interrupts the flow of discussion and just causes more problems, as well as frustrations for the OP.

saraclara · 02/01/2025 13:59

Yes, to both a message saying to read updates (or a much more evident 'see all OP's posts' button) and OPs not being able to be quoted.

I've seen HQ put a message up telling people to read updates where there's been a tragic outcome, so it's obviously doable (though they might use different wording).

catkatcatkat · 02/01/2025 14:02

Hmm. I think there may be a balance between encouraging people to read all the OP’s posts, and encouraging OPs to include pertinent info. For example if you’re thinking of the maternity leave / disciplinary thread, ideally OP would have explained earlier on why they’d taken so much leave.

I wish @MNHQ would make it possible for OPs to pin their replies on their own threads. That way you could have pinned replies appear right under the opening post to ensure people see them.

Me too, although when I posted and asked this in Site Stuff a bunch of people jumped on me.

I agree. That drives me absolutely spare. It’s beyond pointless.

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 02/01/2025 14:03

At least can we have a warning for posters who comment without even reading the first post (and / or the thread title)

AzurePanda · 02/01/2025 14:05

Couldn’t agree more about a ban on quoting the entire original post.

What is Cancel the Cheque? I know about Penis Beakers, but not about Cancelling Cheques.

PokerFriedDips · 02/01/2025 14:07

On Reddit OPs can append important updates/clarifications/dripfeeds to their OP. That would be good.

If an OP sets out the detail of a situation and asks a straight question it is not unreasonable to answer it without reading all the replies. Unless the reply is an actual mean attack on the op, it doesn't actually do anyone any harm if a post exists on a thread that is an answer to the opening post rather than a part of the subsequent discussion.

Maddy70 · 02/01/2025 14:08

On the app (android) you can't search for the ops posts and updates. It's very frustrating

roseymoira · 02/01/2025 14:08

Whilst it is irritating, the argument could be that the OP should include all the info in the OP, rather than dripping feeding.

Oh it was a very long running thread with a complex situation which developed in many complicated ways for weeks but every day someone would just read the OP and suggest that they cancel the cheque as if this was some new insight.

SummerFeverVenice · 02/01/2025 14:09

I don’t think posters should have posts removed or be suspended because

  • the OP does a 10pg long drip feed
  • the poster did read all the OP’s posts but certain pushy posters think that another poster can’t possibly have the opinion they have if only they’d read all the posts
  • it discriminates against posters with difficulties in taking in 99%+ of all details on the first read.
  • I agree with the pp that MN is not a job but a form of social media and like any IRL convo there will always be people missing a bit of the convo and going “sorry come again?” Or joining late and saying “oh I missed that” that’s how socialising goes.
lightsandtunnels · 02/01/2025 14:12

Yes very annoying especially quoting the OP post.

I think you're assuming that the majority of MN posters have the basic skills to recognise this but obviously not. A warning will make no difference to them.
You can't fix stupid!

How would you enforce this? And don’t posters who accidentally post on the wrong thread usually apologise and have their post wothdrawn?

Parliamentary debates have fewer rules…

Except often the OP may not realise that further information might be asked for during the course of the discussion. They might think they've covered the situation, but of course she knows all the background and we don't.
Not to mention that often the real life situation develops during the lifetime of the thread, especially if it's a long one.

Exactly this. People who drip feed or leave out very important things from the OP are to blame for most of it.
