Can I ask please why a thread was deleted?

Lilifer · 31/10/2024 09:28

It was deleted in the last 15 mins, the one about Flaky friends. I was about to post an answer on it and saw it's been deleted for breaking talk guidelines. But there was only about 21 posts on it and none of them were in the least bit offensive or controversial that I could see. How could something have been posted so quickly that was so offensive the entire thread was deleted , why not just delete an offensive post rather than the whole thread??

It was a flakey thread

I’m sure the admin always have their reasons, sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what it was, I’d posted on a thread about what tv show’s genuinely excite you when a new episode is on, which was deleted, couldn’t personally see anything in any of the comments that were offensive but clearly something, maybe posted after my answer of none, was

It’s probably because of the OP, they may be a previously banned poster.

It's weird because because it all seemed very normal and non offensive and the in the space of a few minutes someone must have posted something so egregious that the entire thread had to go and not just the one post. Nuclear option - seems a bit OTT

That was deleted? What on earth...

But they would say that if it was a previously banned poster. The reason they gave in this case was for breaking talk guidelines

I don’t know why, only admin do and I have no wish to be banned from a forum I enjoy reading and posting on by causing a fuss, sometimes an explanation would be nice though, I’ve actually read the talk guidelines and cannot see what the issue was but obviously people often post after you and I don’t pretend I read every post on every thread

Hi OP, just copying over our reply on your other thread:

We removed the thread because we don't believe it was started by a genuine poster. We have tools behind the scenes that help us spot this, but we can't share too much about it. Sorry that the thread was lost, and feel free to start new topics for anything you want to discuss.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 31/10/2024 10:27

I've been on quite a few threads like this recently. Seemingly innocuous conversations. It's actually really frustrating when you've invested time and effort into typing a response and then the thread gets zapped for no apparent reason and without any proper explanation. It's weird given that some pretty offensive threads/posts are allowed to stand.

I'm sure that MNHQ has its reasons,, and perhaps they're valid. But honestly, I don't really care if a thread isn't started by a genuine poster if it leads to an interesting discussion. I do care when racism/ misogyny/ homophobia/ disablism/ ageism etc are so often left to stand.

JaneJeffer · 31/10/2024 10:36

Nothing but deletions on here now.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/10/2024 10:41

The thread naming phrases involving body parts disappeared last night. Can only assume PBP there too, unless it took a very odd turn.

JaneJeffer · 31/10/2024 10:42

I replied to one about new tv series and it got deleted. This place is bonkers.

Oblomov24 · 31/10/2024 10:47

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves

Has put it perfectly:

Sometimes, I actually don't care what the reasons, even if it is a pbposter, or not genuine. The loss to mn, to us, of baby g lost a funny thread, something I've invested in, something I want to read again, and then it's gone. I know that's selfish, but occasionally it really gets on my nerves, and I wonder if it's worth it, the mnhq loss/hassle v my loss/ mn's general loss.

Ok thanks - it seemed genuine to me but I defer to your judgement however it does put me off replying to threads when they can appear totally normal and genuine and then are pulled suddenly because they are not, makes me feel a lot less inclined to engage with threads at all 🥹

Yep that's exactly how I feel too. Couldn't give a monkeys if the discussion itself is engaging and interesting and not offensive

Same @Lilifer it's not worth chatting on here at all these days between deletions and posters complaining and reporting every bloody little thing. Waste of time.

Yes I agree. And I have been on here since 2009, and it has become a very frustrating forum to be on, I spend less and less time on here now which is maybe a good thing but it's a shame as it used to be a fantastic place for discussion and support.

I was on a thread last night What TV shows were you genuinely excited to watch?. All very bland on topic replies. Then, gone. Really don't understand that one. @LilyMumsnet

JaneJeffer · 31/10/2024 11:31

That's the one I was posting on too @EineReiseDurchDieZeit and then it got zapped for breaking talk guidelines Confused

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/10/2024 11:40

I never normally complain to MN but I just found it really strange

Oblomov24 · 31/10/2024 12:59

A previously banned poster posts a thread, about something really non-descript, non-offensive. Which loads of posters enjoy. Then it's gone.

And in theory it's right than banned shouldn't be able to post. But, Don't you think it's extremely interesting when they did post again, the topic that they chose to post about? What does that tell you?

JaneJeffer · 31/10/2024 13:19

I don't understand the question @Oblomov24

Funnywonder · 31/10/2024 13:38

A couple of threads I've been on in the last few days have disappeared into the ether. One of the threads had about 50 posts, a few pithy comments I suppose, but still withal a lot more civilised than some of the awful, ableist threads that have been allowed to stand, despite numerous reports. Disappointing and annoying.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 01/11/2024 08:32

I'm a bit confused .
Is OP incorrect saying reason given was "breaking talk guidelines " ?
MN have said on this thread that it was a previously banned poster.
Deleted threads are a bit annoying when I'm reading and posting but when an understandable reason given it's fair enough.
I particularly dislike the "looking behind the scenes" and no follow up.
