Board for high earners

I see that the other thread was started by an OP who wasn’t engaging in good faith. I certainly am so, Mumsnet, can we please have a separate board for high earners? It would be helpful for these threads to be in one place and to avoid them being high jacked by the inevitable “small violin” and “diamond shoes” comments.

But the reality is that anyone with a higher income can expect a pile on. It wasn’t the case a couple of years ago, but it is now, for exactly the reasons you state, and that I alluded to up-thread.

Personally I would just prefer better moderation, as several have suggested. But if that were the reality then a load of posts in this thread would have been deleted.

The alternative to moderation is a separate board or … what? What would you suggest?

The reality is that anyone on here can expect a pile on. People are told to expect 'robust' responses on AIBU but even when people post about really difficult personal/financial situations on Relationships, they get incredibly unkind and judgemental responses.

A separate board for high earners can't ban people on low or no incomes from posting. I presume that most people wouldn't go looking for the board, but if a thread becomes particularly heated, it will appearing on the Trending list.

If there is a case for stronger moderation and banning rules, it should apply to the whole of Mumsnet and not just a High Earners board. I don't think that most people would want that.

Seems we have other people requestng boards, just remember back in the day they gave the topic sex its own board because people didnt want sex topics mixed with general threads, so if they can give sex its own board then why not finance

There is a whole board called Money Matters.
Why don't people just post on that?

I just worry it will be so full you won’t all fit in and there won’t be anyone left on the rest of MN Sad

That’s the “ I just eat a massive salad” board that overflowed.

WindsurfingDreams · 09/10/2024 07:32

Maybe Mumsnet should just be split into multiple Mumsnets, and you have to show proof of income so they can pop you in the right version?

Maybe

  • under £30k household income
  • £30-50k

-£50-80k

-£80-100k

-£100-200k

-£200- £500k

  • £500-£1m
  • £1m +

Even then, how do we deal with disparity of assets/inheritance etc?
Where do the lottery winners and billionaires go?

Seems like maybe splitting by wealth is a really stupid idea.

There's an "investments" board for those who want to discuss investments. And various very helpful career boards. And the property boards are usually pretty good too

But yeah, if you post something tone deaf you can expect to be called out for it

I think MN should capitalise on the high earners and DWs of high earners by making a separate subscription-only area providing a safe space for discussing +£400 watches, comparing what their DHs earn and give stealth boasts about little Hugo's tuition fees and how painfully long the school holidays are.

I'd hope the benefit could be extended to us plebs in reducing the number of random weird ads on the rest of the site.

I'm a "high earner" btw no poverty chip on my shoulder.

I don't have a problem with the idea of a board for high earners. There might be things that people quite reasonably need or want to discuss, and others can hide the board if they don't want to see it.

It isn't actually the high earners that would post on such a board that are the problem. The issue is with the people who claim that they're "struggling" or "just average" when they're on a high income that would be beyond the wildest dreams of many other posters. Or the ones that claim that it's simply impossible to live in London on less than £100k etc.

I mean , they do have a subscription version, I joined it for a month or two out of curiosity. The subscription threads were very quiet.
Maybe MN need to charge more for the subscription version so it feels sufficiently elite?

Because it's likely that those PP wanting a dedicated high earners board want that special feeling when discussing their lifestyle choices and middle class conundrums AKA stealth boasts.

Where's the satisfaction in doing that on a board which is likely focused on actual help and advice?

MurdoMunro · 09/10/2024 08:00

MetalGearSystem · 08/10/2024 23:48

but at the same time others have been quick to join threads in the already available topic groups and soon as some high earner asks about finances various people that cannot behave soon get the violins out, so its about time for better behaviour from the low earners too if they want the high earners to be more thoughtful with their questions

It’s the mumsnet operating model. If they want to protect groups of people from unkindness, snark or piss taking and put extra work into moderating then they can do so. They choose not to. Wealthy women receive no more of it than many other groups that come here.

What I’m seeing here is that some wealthy members believe they require a special service that poor or fat women (my current notable groups for examples) don’t currently enjoy.

Oh gosh, yes I have reported so many absolutely hideously nasty posts about fat people and none of them get deleted.

Yup. I would have more sympathy with those who want their fragrant rich women space if they acknowledged they are not a special case here.

Yes but did they ask for evidence of earnings through providing individual and individual's DH payslips? Was there a pre-qualification questionnaire on how you are a net contributor?

Now that would really weed out the plebs.

Tbh, I thought this was a joke thread.
I should have realised that on a site where people ask strangers for medical advice, or state how angry they are at a parent spending 'their inheritance ', or advice on the very obvious, that they would need to ask total strangers about being rich and what to do with the money.
I stupidly that they would have the wherewithall to have a network of similarly placed colleagues who would advise in a professional manner
Silly me

Quite right. Dearie me, it's like some of these supposed "high earners" were born in a barn. Did no-one ever teach them that boastfulness doesn't earn friends (or good, genuine advice from anonymous randoms)?

Actually. That’s not a bad criteria for membership - do you need advice about finding a doula to help you birth your children in a barn? Hard to know with barns these days.

Well if you had decent friends or the intelligence to seek independent financial advice (which many high earners have) you don’t need to post on these matters on Mumsnet. This is all a silly thing for a certain demographic to say they have stuff or an excess of money. It is crass.

This. This kind of thing is exactly what winds people up.

I have never been a high earner but I know that, as a teacher now retired, my income was higher than most people in the areas where I taught and that I am now reasonably comfortable in retirement. I am aware of my privilege.

The fat posts are the worst. I have a very dear friend who struggles with her weight and people like that make her life hell. She is judged and judged at every turn, yet is actually an amazing woman doing twice what others do.

Worse still, if you give the fatshamers even a bit of pushback, they simply can’t take it at all. Point out that past a certain age skinny women look wrinkly and it’s all lemon-faced gasps 😱: “what a thing to say!!!”

Curiossir · 09/10/2024 08:35

Can you define 'high earners'?

MurdoMunro · 09/10/2024 09:25

I think it was suggested on the previous thread that got deleted that household income 100k pa should be the threshold. But of course we have been told many times that this is barely above the breadline in London so more debate needed.

A poster above suggested several boards each with their own ranges so they could do that. But then the people in Shitown oop north rolling in 75k and their 10k mortgages paid off would be cast adrift from the ‘how doing I minimise my tax liabilities’ tips.

Wealth disparity is tricky 🤷‍♀️

daisychain01 · 09/10/2024 22:02

How will you be able to tell the genuine high earners from the fantasists? Anyone can post on here about earning £100K with share options, final salary pension, health plan and gym subsidy and you'd never be able to validate it.

So it could save you the bother of not encouraging the delusionals.
