Board for high earners

I see that the other thread was started by an OP who wasn’t engaging in good faith. I certainly am so, Mumsnet, can we please have a separate board for high earners? It would be helpful for these threads to be in one place and to avoid them being high jacked by the inevitable “small violin” and “diamond shoes” comments.

I don’t think it would work. I’ve heard there are quite a few oiks with 100k ‘salaries’ and they could just wander in with loose membership criteria like that. Could you imagine….trades?

A skilled Tradesman who does beautiful joinery and timber framing-?
Sorry, quite beyond the pale.

If MN were like real life:

Imagine a country pub called Mumsnet Arms. The pub is full of all kinds of people, all chatting and nattering together. Some laughing over something idiotic, some seriously discussing their current relationship, some crying.

Someone walks in and asks for advice about a topic whilst making sure everyone knows how much cash they earn and how much tax they avoid by paying in £££ to their pension pot.

A lot of the people in the pub ignore them and chat amongst themselves.

Some in the pub listen and give advice.

But a good majority of the pub can barely afford a pint of beer. Can barely afford to pay their gas bill. Can barely afford to light their homes.
These people have been told repeatedly they shouldn't have had kids. Or they should have made better choices.

So the wealthy person asks a question whilst highlighting their income and pension input.
The poorer people living on less than the wealthy pay to their pension a month take the piss out of the wealthier people..

The wealthier people then complain the poor have dared speak up..

And then the rest of the pub realise how idiotic it is to be complaining about money issues when you save thousands and pay thousands into a pension whilst millions of others are starving and can barely afford to exist.

And then the bar man calls time and the poorer folks go and sit outside in the cold, whilst the richer folks go home to light, warmth and good food.. on the way home, the wealthy folks complain to each other that the poor get too much.. and that they shouldn't have kids or tvs or mobile phones or winter fuel help..

on the flip side some of those poor think the rich should have their wealth taxed more etc and they are not allowed to be that rich and that the poor prefer a more communism style redistribution of the wealthy peoples wealth (not all but some)

Why don’t we celebrate high earning women? What if we could learn from them?
It reminds me of being at school (comp), doing well in an exam, and everyone piling on about me being a girly swat.
Fuck sake.
Men earn more than us (fact). What we are missing out on here by goading and piss taking is that some women have cracked the code. They are probably somewhat isolated by it…can’t talk to anyone about it because it’s seen as boastful, but might actually want to help others and be helped by others.
The ones who go on about VAT on private education though, they can fuck right off. You want a good education for your kids…either fight for a good state system or suck it up

excatly, i mean people are there to aspire to people like alan sugar, richard branson etc so why not have high earning business women too to aspire too.

I would say a PhD only from Oxbridge.
I met someone once with a PhD from Birmingham! Can you imagine?!

A PhD? It is a DPhil in Oxford! Shocking!

Ironically some tradies are probably high earners! Would they be allowed to join in this exclusive board?!

This is an excellent analogy! Except that what @BellesAndGraces is suggesting is that the high earners should have a table in the corner of the back bar where they can go and talk quietly among themselves if they know the topic might be triggering without anyone else needing to throw a drunken tantrum and start a brawl.

Well on the rest of the boards, if anyone dares to mention a higher income they are bullied of the thread (see 50% of the replies in here as examples).

So it would be to discuss anything and everything that might cause income-related-sensitivity if discussed elsewhere.

There are a lot of posters assuming it would be to ask for financial advice. I don’t think anyone requesting it has suggested that.

The original thread was to ask for financial advice so that is where that came from.

The whole point of MN is that anyone and everyone can contribute to a thread so I’m not sure how you would stop anyone and everyone posting on a high income thread.

The whole idea is unbelievably crass.

lol 🙄

'This us why we can't have nice things' My 8 year old said that, just as patronisingly, to her 5 year old brother tonight.

Well, yes. That’s the joke. It’s a tired cliche said ironically.

Good point. There was someone with 2 PhDs recently! Probably on a property thread..

I once met a woman with two - she was somewhat prone to exaggeration, her business card said 'PhD²'

The funny thing is I grew up dirt poor - my guess is far poorer than a lot of the complainers on this thread. I don’t ever recall having this vitriol for those who had more than us.

OP posts:
ohthejoys21 · 08/10/2024 22:46

In the US success is applauded and celebrated. Here (especially Mumsnet) mainly jealousy. So much jealousy. I look up to high earners as I do to lower earners who work just as hard.

HollyLollyMollyJolly · 08/10/2024 22:47

I thought mumsnet demographic is popularly known for being middle class with high-earning dh with important jobs, and higher earning women, so why is a separate board needed when MN is predominantly that?

On the other hand, why is it a problem to speak about high earning and high earners' issues especially on a separate board if this is such a normal thing on mumsnet?

Either way, could it be that the mumsnet demographic reputation is false?

Well, if the threads were on a different board presumably they wouldn’t be so triggering to all those who pile on with “tiny violins”.

And equally it would be easier to suggest to someone who did pile on that if the topic upset them they might benefit from hiding it.

Then maybe you wouldn’t have someone who was asking for advice following her husbands suicide having to ask for her thread to be deleted.

What are we defining as high earning? Is it household or an individual?

Alas, if you have to ask ...

So is that going to be applied to the ‘high earners’ board or all other boards as well? The mods are going to be very busy.

Well, who is stopping anyone from starting a thread about high earning women and their achievements?

I have seen a few AMAs from high earning Mumsnetters that have been really well received - the OP sharing her experience and answering questions about the kind of work she does and what it's like. Instead of snarky comments, people were genuinely interested and admiring.

Then you see the AMAs or threads which are not about work at all - they are just about being rich. There was one AMA about having a household income of £500k or similar, and it was like getting blood out of a stone to find out the source of the income (turned out to be the husband's scaffolding business). Instead, the OP just wanted to talk about how many ovens she had in her kitchen (four, iirc). Naturally, everyone took the piss out of this deeply dull showing off thread.

MurdoMunro · 08/10/2024 22:55

People are being snarky because we have a big problem with wealth disparity in the UK which is becoming more stark, obvious and problematic. To come into a place where the likelihood of the majority being at the bottom of the scale and very often with limited opportunity to redress that to ask for a special place to talk about your money problems is going to get people’s ganders up. The fact that you are so prickly about the responses kinda demonstrates the point really. It’s the tone, it’s always about the tone.

Changing the narrative on wealth inequality

New approaches to framing wealth inequality as a social problem could build political pressure for change.
