Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

Well I had a new one (to me) today.

Again just scrolling through notifications.

I did click on a notification of new posts and got taken to a blank screen with nothing on it but on of those Captcha boxes that asks you to tick to confirm you are a human.

It wouldn't let me use the back arrow so just closed the tab.

And forgot to make a note of the web address. If it happens again I will try and make a note.

What is going on?

Is this some sort of targetting of mumsnet (having seen recent posts).

mumsnet really needs to challenge whichever company it is that is supplying the ads at random.

It is totally unaccetable, and has made me less interested in coming on the web site.

Windows 11 desktop, Firefox, McAfee.

Same as @IwantToRetire this evening. I'm getting really fed up of posting on this thread about these constant issues.

I've had this twice today, both times when on MN.

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 08/01/2025 22:49

Me too, yesterday and today on a laptop using chrome.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 10/01/2025 00:06

@MNHQ It's coming up on the top of my browser as a pop up (I have pop ups blocked) on every thread I look at. It's got a tab which I didn't copy asking me to view all blocked contact (I haven't clicked on it).

ElaborateCushion · 15/01/2025 10:50

I just had another "McAfee" one pop up - haven't had one for ages

ElaborateCushion · 15/01/2025 10:50

Sorry - copy and paste of a screenshot didn't work

I've just had this delight auto-downloaded simply changing pages on AIBU. Of course I deleted it.
Running an AV scan now.

Morning, everyone. We're still working on this one, but thank you to everyone who has sent in info so far. The info we need at the moment is the following:

  • Device you are on
  • What page were you on?
  • Did you see an ad or click on one? If so can you share the click through URL, or give a description of the ad?

If you're seeing these pop-ups and haven't yet sent us the above info, we'd be really grateful if you could do so next time you see it. Many thanks. Flowers

is there any update on this? It's really putting me off using the site, it's been going on for months

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/01/2025 13:29

Happened to me again today after about a week of non-occurrence. So if it was stopped, it's back again.

JoMumsnet · 17/01/2025 14:18

We're sorry to hear this pop up has returned for some of you.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat are you still using Firefox / laptop? And can you please let us know which thread you were on when you saw it.

@burnoutbabe can we ask which device / browser / version of the site you're using?

Thanks in advance.

burnoutbabe · 17/01/2025 14:21

I am on firefox on a laptop =134.0.1 - up to date

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/01/2025 14:23

Yep, Firefox, laptop. Can't remember which page I was on when it happened - it was at about 9.30 this morning and I just closed Mumsnet down, reopened and haven't had a problem since.

QueryA · 17/01/2025 14:27

Happened to me again! I was on active convos, not even on a thread, just scrolling down the list. I'm on Windows 11, firefox. Fully virus protected with work top of the range virus protection. (believe me, we can hardly open anything without it asking us being warned of internet safety!)

Hi @JoMumsnet - mine was yesterday too.

I'm on Chrome - v 131.0.6778.266 on a work Windows 11 PC, so has lots of security already.
