Private conversations held on MN

I thought MN was a public forum where essentially any one with a registered account could start a thread. And the thread was open to anyone with a registered account to join in the discussion .

Why then are " private threads " allowed? Where essentially certain MN users have a private conversation with each other which is being conducted on a public forum? I'm thinking here of the New Fred thread in 30 days, although I have seen other examples in the past.

Surely this isn't what MN is supposed to be about?
Why can't these posters use the private messaging facility or conduct their conversation elsewhere.

Total cliquism vibes.

You didn't miss the link but you did miss the fact it was posted on the 30-days board. Which the OP here also missed. It's where sensitive threads get posted as they go pooof after 30 days. Generally one should always be aware of the board where things are posted as it can give good clues about the nature of the thread or the posters.

That's a considered and helpful response. I think the OP is new to Mumsnet so probably wasn't familiar with 30 days only.

RitzyMcFee · 18/09/2024 20:50

Not that this person was aware of though. Or was the opening post on the Fred thread edited and I missed a link to the previous ones or something?

Entering a conversation/thread with the phrase 'might be helpful if...etc'is no way to start a conversation or garner information about what a thread might be about.

Regardless, I can't get on board with the suggestion (or command) that every thread should be immediately welcoming and 'inclusive' just in case someone wants to know what it's about.

I agree. I don't think every thread needs to include everyone.
But it's also ok to acknowledge that the OPs feelings of exclusion are valid.
Not everything has to be black or white.

some people would start a fight with a paper bag.

I didn't read it as snippy, more awkward. But I've got the context of their anxiety from this thread. I wonder if that's clouding my interpretation of it.
Either way, we actually have no idea whether the OP of the Fred thread would have been polite or not, dependant on tone.

She has posted a couple of times on this thread and seems very amiable.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 18/09/2024 22:39

Of all the threads op could have postered on she chooses one in 30 days that she didn't have a clue about

Come on

Exactly. The OP’s sarcastic “Might be helpful if…” opening suggested she thought she hadn’t been given the information she needed to contribute - when in fact she didn’t need to contribute at all. OP was acting like she was the only person in a room and everyone else there had deliberately started a conversation they knew she couldn’t join. MN isn’t like that. You have access to thousands of conversations; if you don’t understand what one is about, you can join another in a couple of clicks.

“Not everything is for/about you” is a valuable lesson that most of us learn as children. Unfortunately some adults still haven’t learnt it.

It could run for years and years

"How I made an arse of myself on Mumsnet (or elsewhere) today."

Keeps us all humble.

RavenT · 19/09/2024 19:18

This is Fred! 🙂 Years ago I got this wonderful fellow from a cat rescue. I started threads after him because I was running out of ideas of thread titles! It stuck. 🙂 You are all welcome to post, read etc.

He definitely deserves his title!

He is indeed a handsome fella.

He's beautiful!

I honestly thought Fred was a silly way to say thread and that you had got bored of typing Thread 10 or Thread 17 and you started typing Fred 20 instead. Like a little (harmless!) inside joke.

Yep, even an admin has posted!

I daren't check for any deletions but I think we were all well behaved for a change 😇

I had a Fred!

He was beautiful and audacious - he once brought a roast chicken carcass through the cat flap! I was vegetarian so it wasn’t from us.

Quiches used to be a big thing on MN back in the day. The Wolefs, the Puddlehumpers, the Fucknuggets…

RightSedFred · 20/09/2024 19:18

I like a quiche. We're having one for tea tomorrow.

TheElementsSong · 23/09/2024 16:31

This thread is wild! Grin

Stravaig · 24/09/2024 06:00

OP, your posts on this thread are obscure, long-winded, make arcane references to other threads. Summarised, all you are saying is "me, me, me, me, me". That's the very definitive of non-inclusive.

Do you think this thread of yours will be interesting enough to others and create enough of a community to become a long-running thread?

DeanElderberry · 24/09/2024 10:09

btw, someone upthread said there 'used to be' a thread about the Archers. Very much still there, 173 threads in and including in its inhabitants people who knew each other on websites that have been closed for years, united by their love for Shula and Kenton.

Or something.

Welcoming to newbies and usually ready with explanations of the in-jokes, even if it takes a little time.
