Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

I don't know but some are back now, just not the flashing moving ones.

It comes & goes. I've had a blank box, static and moving content.

It's really hard on the eyes & rendering the app unusable.

Cherryblossom81 · 24/03/2024 09:52

Yes, it is awful. My battery is also draining so fast when I use the Mumsnet app.

globalwondering · 24/03/2024 09:55

Adding another voice to this that it is hugely impacting how the app is used. It's quite simply in the wrong place and as someone who has sensitive sight and migraines, flashing or moving images mean that I can't use the app with these ads in place.

SnowFrogJelly · 24/03/2024 11:35

@MNHQ please remove the scrolling banner ads at the top of the page on the app, these are making the app unusable

WobblyLondoner · 24/03/2024 17:19

This is what I've had for the last few days - really distracting and slows the app down.

Ditto (iPhone and no update recently). Annoying as hell.

Anyone else having the app shut down before it even opens?

Yes, persistently crashing on opening

Yep me. Literally started happening when the banner appeared.

Regularly Sad

RockaLock · 24/03/2024 19:20

I find the iPad app is also freezing now on a regular basis - since the introduction of these banner ads, in fact. I can scroll a thread, but none of the other buttons work.bam constantly having to shut it down and restart it.

That aside, I might not mind the big ads so much if in return we actually got anything approaching the functionality of the website!! But to have an app with such limited, basic functions and then to add huge ads everywhere is just adding insult to injury.

LegoTherapy · 24/03/2024 21:01

All the ads are back flickering and my app crashing as I try to open it so it flashes. I'm deleting the app now. I've had enough.

Yes, every time.

Really hoping MN will have the courtesy to respond to the thread today & address the ad issue.

No-one has objected to ads, per se. But this design is so bad, it's affecting functionality and causing usability issues.

JPduck · 25/03/2024 07:18

Me too, not very user friendly

Still checking this thread each day waiting on a reply.

Ads are fine. Placement and movement is not. (Gambling not a great look either)

hjrl · 25/03/2024 07:25

@JaneJeffer yes

Tessisme · 25/03/2024 08:54

Reading that last reply from MNHQ, I don't think there is any intention to change the placement of the banner, just the 'unrelated' crashing. So we're stuck with it. I'm very disappointed as I have always found the app much easier to navigate due to the fact it is so pared down compared to the browser version. There are already loads of ads placed multiple times throughout every single thread. (and I tap at least one of them every day by mistake!) Is that not enough? Ah well, maybe now I'll just get off Mumsnet and do something a bit more productive.

I agree. Gambling ads on a predominantly parenting forum is very bad taste indeed. I know two parents who ruined theirs and their children's lives by gambling.

ballpithell · 25/03/2024 11:03

This banner ad is awful, right st the top as you try to scroll down. Takes up a lot of space on a phone screen.

I sent them an email saying I was disappointed with their response but they didn't even reply.

I'm having to limit my MN usage to short check ins now which is probably a good thing anyway.

Oh yes, good point about the gambling ads!

Actually, all the ads I see are pretty dubious. Nothing relevant. Often in other languages, just ... weird.

BeckyAMumsnet · 25/03/2024 13:14

Thanks, everyone for sharing your feedback. We realise that the introduction of banner ads has caused a fair bit of frustration and we will give your comments here due consideration. The ads you’re seeing are a standard format commonly used across the internet and in line with the set-up of the site. However, if there is a particular ad that is causing problems for you, please do let us know, preferably with a screen recording so that we can quickly locate it.

Yes, I have multiple tabs in my browser on my phone from where I've tapped an ad in error. I know that's what MNHQ want to happen but I can promise you, it never ever makes me remotely interested in whatever is being advertised.

Properly designed, relevant advertising (which you'd think would be easy, based on following the threads I post on or read) would be fine and possibly even useful!
