Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Two and a half days later and the reply from @LilyMumsnet @mnhq shows that they haven't even RTFT, to use a mn acronym. No one has a problem with embedded static ads.

meemyselffandI · 22/03/2024 18:24

You already run ads like every one else, we know that.
We are saying we find them distracting, and are problematic when they are flashing and jittery for some users, including me.

Yep typical MN response, 30 seconds to type a post and then bugger off out the office for the weekend.

CheckeredAliceBand · 22/03/2024 19:49

Just another voice hating the ad at the top. It's honestly making me not want to come on the site. The ones that you scroll past are fine but having this is my eyeline all the time literally gives me a headache

RockaLock · 22/03/2024 20:12

Something is draining both my iPhone and iPad battery a lot more quickly than usual, and the only thing that's changed is the new moving banner ads...

So, sorry @MNHQ, but they will only make me use the MN app less often.

Have a banner ad if you must, but make it a static one!

Plus as I said previously, whenever I encounter a moving/video ad, my hearing aids get annoying fuzzy static interference. So they're not very disability-inclusive, are they.

JaneJeffer · 22/03/2024 20:25

@LilyMumsnet just in case anyone cares alistapart.com/article/designing-safer-web-animation-for-motion-sensitivity/

Don't make animations, sliders, videos, or rapid movement start automatically. Give an indicator of what movement will happen on the site when someone takes action. Allow the option to turn off any animation and movement at any point in the process.

theatremachine · 22/03/2024 20:37

This seems to keep crashing the app too.

And I'd echo others saying the battery is draining much faster.

TidyDancer · 22/03/2024 17:12

@LilyMumsnet it's not running ads that are the problem, it's the position of this one. Please just get rid of the banner ads at the top. Add more in the threads themselves if you must but just not the banner.

Absolutely this. Have got used to the ads in the threads but these banner ads are terrible. Please listen to your users. Why no response?

hjrl · 22/03/2024 21:26

In a site which prides itself on taking feedback why oh why introduce this with no notice and then dismiss comments like it's something everyone should know about.

Absolutely advertising is needed, but the app is the most basic and simple way for many of us to access content.

There is basic talk and nothing else. No advanced search, no website info, just talk.

Why can feedback not be heard? That's surely not in the spirit of the site.

You have heard about
Visual impairment
Neurodivergent issues
Babies feeding
Headaches
Inappropriate advert content
Placement

I think there was always a small advert. This is something else all together

Good grief it's grim. This lot travelling across the screen is wildly distracting and not in a way that's going to get me to engage with the ad. Switching off to something else instead now.

I agree with everyone else. I understand the need for adverts, but it's the moving of the banner at the top that is particularly awful.

My battery is also draining very fast when I am on the Mumsnet app (but my phone is fine on all other apps that I use).

lovepotionnumbernine · 23/03/2024 08:59

I've been seeing these as well. Flashy ads for gambling sites no less. It's really hard to ignore them and read the content. I also get the Mumsnet opinion ad whenever I open a thread.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/03/2024 09:08

I don't have a problem with ads on the app @LilyMumsnet - it's just that this new banner style app affects the usability of the app itself. Especially when they're flashing in your eye-line while you're trying to read posts at the top of the page.

If the banner ads are remaining, I also think it's time for me to delete the app.

RainbowConnection1 · 23/03/2024 09:14

That response was awful. Next one will be telling us all to take out a subscription to Mumsnet Premium to avoids the ads. Kerching! Not a chance I'll be doing that so it looks like my time on MN is just about done.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/03/2024 09:21

MNHQ are so dismissive of the fact that their product is us, the posters. Without the content we generate, they have nothing to use for the purposes of ad revenue.

LegoTherapy · 23/03/2024 09:40

It's disappeared for me now and is just an empty rectangle.

Actually I do feel I get a lot of value out of mumsnet, and don't want to give up using so I would consider paying. But I only use mumsnet on my phone, on the app, so as I understand it would not be able to access the other benefits of premium.

Could there be a premium-app rate? I would probably pay £2 per month for the app completely add free. It's only worth the current £4.99 if you are also able to offer all the other missing functionality too.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/03/2024 10:06

I would also consider paying, if the app was functional, ad free, and MN themselves were more professional in their approach.

The thing is, even MN premium doesn't guarantee no ads, just "fewer ads"!

How did you manage that

LegoTherapy · 23/03/2024 15:58

I don't know but some are back now, just not the flashing moving ones.

TidyDancer · 23/03/2024 17:13

I've still got the flashing and moving ones. Mostly seems to be gambling as well which is even worse. @MNHQ this is really poor form.

Newtonianmechanics · 24/03/2024 09:24

Come on Mumsnet this isn't good for migraines!

Its actually painful. Make it stop.

Yes - I mostly use my tablet except when I'm out - it's particularly bad on the phone and the browser isn't a good alternative if you're longsighted and can't do small print
