Low Carb Recipes

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a thread for low carb recipes, in the weight loss section? Could be used for both the Bootcamp and Low Carb topics.

We currently have separate recipe threads in the Bootcamp topic (organised by food type, e.g. meat or poultry or vegetarian, but they keep getting lost in the list of other topics.

Having them all in one, dedicated topic would make them much easier to find.

What do you think?

I'd find it useful to have a low carb recipe topic too. Thanks Mumsnet!

ArcaneWireless · 30/01/2024 19:11

Aye from me. 👍🏽

pinknsparkly · 30/01/2024 19:12

This would be fantastic, yes please! I know they exist but always struggle hugely to actually find them!

Magnolia82 · 30/01/2024 19:19

Great idea. I would find this really helpful.

BigBoysDontCry · 30/01/2024 19:27

I'm interested in low carb recipes but not for weight loss so I wouldn't really use a general weight loss recipe topic.

Many diabetics need/want low carb recipes without necessarily being overweight. I'm actually underweight but can add in healthy fats/extra protein into a low carb recipe to increase the calories so it's fine that they are in the weight loss topic. But I'd be completely uninterested in low calorie or low fat recipes that weren't low carb.

Appreciate that's maybe more niche but I can't be alone?

BigBoysDontCry · 30/01/2024 19:31

And just to add, to the disgruntled poster above, low carb isn't always just a weight loss tool, for some of us it's a requirement for our health conditions. A condition that is really not catered for while lifestyle choices such as veganism are over catered for imo.

BigBoysDontCry · 30/01/2024 19:59

Yes but not if it was mixed weight loss recipes if that makes sense?

I'd have to know in advance rather than having to look at the nutritional stats of each recipe to see if it was low carb or not. Grass fed butter is very much my friend 😁

As I say, I can increase the calories in a low carb recipe if needed but it's harder to reduce the carbs in another type of recipe. I know there is a lot of overlap as carbs are calories but I wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't low fat or whatever.

I can also happily use keto recipes but not worry too much if I add in a little extra carbs.

At the moment I'm still trying to gain a little weight (hard on low carbs/no sugar) but in a few pounds time I'll just want to maintain.

Baystard · 30/01/2024 20:01

Yes please!

Also - low carb isn't just about weight loss, it's about long term healthy lifestyle.

BIWI · 30/01/2024 20:03

Yes I agree @BigBoysDontCry (and expressed my view earlier in the thread I think), that having a mixed 'weight loss recipe' topic would actually just become confusing.

Because there are two topics just devoted to low carb! A third seems to be overkill for one weight loss method.

I would appreciate a topic for general weight loss recipes, if MN are considering adding topics.

Exactly my view. Maybe rename one of the two existing Low Carb topic. Does bootcamp need a topic on its own, since it renews itself all the time? Pregnancy has ongoing threads for those due in January, February, March .... without the need of a separated "Due in" topic.

BigBoysDontCry · 30/01/2024 20:07

Can I also ask is it recipes fully written out or ones with links to where it is on-line?

I don't mind either way as I now have some favourites that I've found on-line and printed out for regular use.

I get stuck in a rut though and find I'm just repeating the same stuff. Whilst you can look at the reviews its nice to have recommendations from folk who've actually used them /adapted them for UK.

BIWI · 30/01/2024 20:11

The Bootcamp recipes are always (or should be) written out recipes, as links often expire.

There were some in the early days which I then copied out from the links. Hopefully the more recent ones are all written out.

@Payakan if you'd read the thread you'll see exactly why there's a Bootcamp topic and a separate low carb topic. But for the sake of clarity, it's because MNetters - when surveyed by Justine - said they wanted Bootcamp to be kept separate from the Low Carb topic. That makes sense, really, because the Low Carb topic covers different forms of low carbing, whereas Bootcamp is one, specific approach.

OP posts:
Payakan · 30/01/2024 20:20

Does it have to be separated still? There are dates on titles. Easy enough to find the current bootcamp, isn't it?
Once finished, a bootcamp discussion is no longer used. You are only storing old discussions which serve no purpose.

AllTheBlackCoffee · 30/01/2024 20:27

I'd love a dedicated LC recipe topic. The bootcamp topic is so fast-paced the recipe threads easily get lost so having a whole section would be fab!

Almahart · 30/01/2024 20:44

I'd love this!

Zwifter · 30/01/2024 20:48

I’d use this a lot. It can be really hard to find the recipes within threads so having a dedicated place for them would be great.

Aessedaioftarvalon · 30/01/2024 21:22

Brilliant idea!

moderndilemma · 30/01/2024 23:42

A great idea!

FinallyHere · 31/01/2024 00:02

It would be really helpful for me, to have a separate topic for low carb recipes. As PP have pointed out, the bootcamp threads are very fast paced so that recipes often get lost , even though, in fact especially since they are so very useful.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/01/2024 01:21

I'm in favour. As @LiesDoNotBecomeUs says, Low-carbing isn't something you can mix and match with. It doesn't sit well with weight-loss recipes from other plans.

I can't imagine the SW and WW peeps want to see our pork belly and mayonnaise recipes. I don't really want to look at their syns and points! We're avoiding counting!

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 31/01/2024 02:27

Baystard · 30/01/2024 20:01

Yes please!

Also - low carb isn't just about weight loss, it's about long term healthy lifestyle.

This is another good point about the recipes. They are not just for those losing weight - they are about health too.

Looking on a recipe thread for healthy ideas would make more sense than searching a weight loss topic if you are not trying to lose weight.

LovelaceBiggWither · 31/01/2024 02:42

I'd like a separate low carb topic.

I also think a separate ozempic/wegovy/zepbound topic would be a great idea. There's so many of them now and so many repeated questions.

Goodiewhemper · 31/01/2024 06:24

Yes another vote for a low carb recipe thread. It would make it so much easier as so many great recipes get lost in the general BC threads. I don't get the objections really. I started BC because I am a coeliac whose blood sugars were at the highest point in the normal range and with a family history of diabetes and heart disease and previous gestational diabetis I needed to get it under control. It was my doctor who first suggested low carb to manage it and since starting BC a few months ago my levels have gone from.42 to 36.

Low carbing is not just about weight loss. That is a bonus. I have lost 7kgs and my waist line is decreasing. Quite a few wins in there. As an aside even if my only goal was weight loss most other weight loss plans are really not compatible with coeliac disease in the long term. LC recipes all tend to be gluten free as well.

PurpleWhirple · 31/01/2024 06:34

Agree that a separate low carb recipe section would be very helpful, and also that all the ozempic/wegovy/weight loss drugs threads should be grouped together somewhere. There are so many of them!
