Low Carb Recipes

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a thread for low carb recipes, in the weight loss section? Could be used for both the Bootcamp and Low Carb topics.

We currently have separate recipe threads in the Bootcamp topic (organised by food type, e.g. meat or poultry or vegetarian, but they keep getting lost in the list of other topics.

Having them all in one, dedicated topic would make them much easier to find.

What do you think?

Hi again, @BIWI. A low-carb recipes thread is totally fine but we wanted to check that was definitely what you were after, as obviously you can just start a thread yourself wherever you like. A whole topic would be something entirely different obviously, but let us know what you were thinking anyway.

BIWI · 22/01/2024 10:53

Hi @HebeMumsnet

Yes, I was thinking of a whole topic. As I said, we already have specific recipe threads, but they get lost in the overall topic, given that we start new threads fairly frequently.

If we make it a 'Low Carb Recipe' topic, then that will include people who post in the Low Carb topic as well as those who post in the Bootcamp topic (and all the recipes posted in either topic would work for each one - i.e. none of the recipes in the Low Carb Bootcamp topic are only applicable for people doing Bootcamp, and would work just as well for people in the Low Carb topic)

I know you try not to create new topics where at all possible, but I think in this instance it will make it easier for people to navigate - as well as, hopefully, encourage people to post their own recipes.

Hope that all makes sense.

Aren't there already two Low Carb topics? Do we really need a third? I think it would be far more useful to have a Weight Loss drugs topic to combine all the Wegovy, Saxenda, Ozempic .... from the non-medicated weight loss since a lot of those threads discuss suppliers and price more than weight loss.

BIWI · 22/01/2024 21:44

Yes there are, but this would be a specific recipe topic - so different from the Bootcamp challenges or general Low Carb chat.

I guess there could be interest for a weight loss recipes topic, but I wouldn't restrict it to Low Carb. A weight loss recipes topics should be open to everyone.

Recipes for the whole rainbow of weight loss methods, the 5:2, Zoe, Fast 800, Mediterranean diet, Weight Watchers, ... and whatever flavour might become trendy in 2024. You have a recipe you swear by when you can't fit in your jeans, post it here. It might be quite successful.

And you would catch everyone and not just a small Low Carb niche.

BIWI · 23/01/2024 09:36

The fact that there are two low carb topics should be some indication that it's not just a small niche!

Not sure why you, personally, seem to be so set against the idea? Or so dismissive in your arguments against it?

OP posts:
Payakan · 23/01/2024 10:27

Not at all. I actually quite like the idea of a weight loss recipes topic.

I personally enjoy reading the Zoe ones, so I would like those to be included, since we are talking about creating a new topic from scratch.

Do you have objections about a wider and more inclusive topic?

BIWI · 23/01/2024 10:31

No I don't. But if you have a weight loss recipe topic, then within that you're also going to have to have separate topics to make it clear which weight loss method you're looking for. You can't have a topic within a topic, so you'd have to label each recipe with the weight loss method otherwise it would become just a confusing mishmash.

OP posts:
Payakan · 23/01/2024 11:09

I don't think so. The title would give it away, wouldn't it? Like Mosley's Mushroom pizza or the Zoe's giant butter bean stew.

There is also already a recipe section in Feed the world, and people seem to find easily what they are looking for, without having sub-topic. There isn't one for fussy eaters or fancy dinners. All live happily together under the same roof.

Overall, I like your idea, just make it bigger!

BIWI · 23/01/2024 12:17

Well, no. I could post a recipe for shepherd's pie that's either low calorie, low fat or low carb. So it would become confusing - everyone would have to start their thread title with the diet that it's relevant for. And I'd bet good money that 9 times out of 10 people would forget.

Yes, a low carb recipe topic could go into Feed the World - but it's still another topic being added. So why not add it to a place where it's more immediately relevant, e.g. the weight loss section?

OP posts:
blackteaplease · 23/01/2024 12:29

I'd like this please then I would easily be able to find what I was looking for. It's no different to travel having skiing or camping as separate topics to holidays or all the individual pet sections. Or a whole topic devoted to sporn

Leedsmum27 · 23/01/2024 12:30

I’d find a low carb recipe thread really useful - a go to place for very welcome ideas that would avoid the search in the wider low carb thread.

agree with @BIWI that the recipes would be very different from other approaches to weight lost and best kept separate.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 23/01/2024 15:13

I would really like a low carb recipe thread as there are some great ideas in low-carb threads but having somewhere to browse them all would be very helpful.

Low-carbing isn't something you can mix and match with. It doesn't sit well with weight-loss recipes from other plans.

BIWI · 29/01/2024 19:51

Any thoughts, MNHQ?

OP posts:
LilyMumsnet · 30/01/2024 14:58

Hi @BIWI

We open new topics based on how much they'll be used. When a Mnetter starts a thread in site stuff (we can use this one), we can measure the interest level. We'll keep an eye on this and see how it goes!

BIWI · 30/01/2024 15:21

OK - thank you. I'll ask the Bootcamp crew and see what they think.

OP posts:
Mochudubh · 30/01/2024 15:39

I think this is a great idea.

DancingDangerously · 30/01/2024 15:56

Yes please!

DancingDangerously · 30/01/2024 15:58

Oh and I definitely agree with @BIWI that Low carb/Bootcamp needs its own recipe topic.

Way too confusing otherwise. And way too much potential for arguing/discussion.

Not interested in that.

mimosa1 · 30/01/2024 16:30

Agree :)

Skiphopbump · 30/01/2024 16:37

Agree we need a low carb recipe topic.

BassoContinuo · 30/01/2024 16:48

If there is going to be a low carb recipe topic can there also be recipe topics for other ways of losing weight? It does seem as though low carb gets a lot of priority treatment on MN, but it doesn’t suit everyone.

BIWI · 30/01/2024 16:52

Why do you think that @BassoContinuo? There are separate topics for other methods of weight loss, and LOADS of threads about calorie counting, ozempic/wegovy, etc.

I agree that it would be useful for those following other diets to have their own recipe thread, but I'm not asking for them! I'm asking for the low carbers/Bootcampers.

OP posts:
Frenchfemme · 30/01/2024 16:54

I’m not doing Bootcamps or Keto, but do try to eat low-carb. I would find a dedicated low-carb recipe thread very useful. Thanks BIWI for driving this.

EffortlessDistraction · 30/01/2024 16:59

Oh yes please! I can never find the low carb recipe threads because they rapidly fall down the list of threads in the main bootcamp topic.
