There have been a few threads in the last week alone. Its like this is a nice safe little prejudice that the social housing haters can enjoy with no comebacks.

To still feel slightly bitter about this? (Inheriting social housing) | Mumsnet

I grew up in a two bed council house with my mother (single parent) and my sister in what could now be considered a highly gentrified area within walk...

I may be wrong but social housing is no longer for life ? I thought you now have to downsize if the property is no longer suitable for your needs ?

Not true necessarily. We're in ours for life. We both work full time, and are staying put. We're in a hugely expensive area to live, so no way could we afford to buy. When the houses were built, it was a planning condition that they went to people who had a local connection, and my now husband was given one. The condition still stands, so even if we left, someone local would be given it, not someone from out of the immediate area.
So in short, it really does depend on the individual authority/HA/any planning conditions.

I understand that...but the problem is huge numbers of people are in the same situation and will never stand a chance at getting social housing. There are many many people who will be deserving cases but there's not enough properties. Of course it will result in resentment

JazzyJogger · 18/12/2023 09:39

@SuperSange

Maybe you have an old tenancy contract ? I thought if you take a tenancy now they did reviews to see if the property is still suitable for your needs ? I don't blame you for staying where you are btw, My friend is in a three bedroom house on her own with her husband and has a bargaining chip , she isn't leaving until she gets the accommodation she wants as she has an old tenancy contract and I don't blame her . They have health problems and need a bungalow.

HebeMumsnet · 18/12/2023 09:55

Hi there @JenniferBooth (and others). Thanks for getting in touch.

We've had a look at the thread you specifically mention and we think as a whole it's ok. If there are any particular posts that you think we need a closer look at though, please do just hit the report button.

We don't feel it's a subject we can stop people discussing really. If rules are being broken, however, and there are personal attacks there or that sort of thing, that's different and we'd delete anything like that. Similarly, if you suspected that someone was on Mumsnet JUST to post about this kind of topic in order to stir up trouble, we'd always be happy to take a look behind the scenes and make sure they were here to post in a genuine way.

Usually, when we get a run of threads on a topic like this it's simply because seeing another thread on the subject has reminded people of a situation in their own lives, so they also post about it. But we can see that occasionally it can feel a bit wearisome. You can always 'hide' threads from yourself so they don't pop up again whenever you log on, but as we say, if you ever have any doubts please do just report them. We're always happy to take a look and check so don't worry about being 'wrong' or anything like that.

Personally I don’t feel annoyed at SH tenants. We are all just winners or losers in the local councils process. It’s very gutting that this security and affordability is only available to the few not the many , and where I live there are elderly single people living in three bed houses which does feel really wrong and unfair.
but I appreciate the system is unfair, not the tenants.
it is jarring though sometimes if tenants try to justify the system or say it is fair, but most don’t.

JenniferBooth · 18/12/2023 18:01

@Twoshoesnewshoes well this should cheer you up. Im expected to let these in for an electrical safety check right before Christmas. What could go wrong??!!!

Cowboys! total joke they did the fire alarms and security system in my bungalow and wire it up to my lights instead of the smoke alarm fuse, it as cost my a fortune as I am on a pay as you go meter, my meter as used £9.00 in 3 day that would normally last me nearly a fortnight. Now I am getting the electric company out who supply my electric to check the wiring! Everything was okay until they did they work! A JOKE!

There are lots of groups that are looked down on or posted about negatively. There's no need to single out social housing tenants as needing special protection.

JenniferBooth · 18/12/2023 18:08

As a childfree by choice woman i could say the same about parents. You find that they arent so keen on free speech then

Brilliant post @Maverickess

Found this Quite interesting

I had the misfortune of being an electrical subcontractor for McIntyre on a social housing contract. The first issue came up when they forgot to schedule me for my induction, so I had to force them to have me on the day. The second issue came with one of their software for uploading before and after pictures that did not work half of the time. The third and most important issue came when they called me to tell me that they cannot pay me for the electrical certificate condition reports that have been unsatisfactory, because the client only paid on a satisfactory condition report. Please note that they have not provided any stock, nor paid you for using your own materials. After a phone argument with the project manager, they finally agreed to pay for all of them pending that I would return to do the repairs. Consequently, they called me back to tell me that I have not invoiced them, given that I have filled an invoice for every single site. They replied that those where their own invoices for the client. So for 40£ an EICR, you are expected to complete the inspection, complete the certificate, upload it, upload the pictures, fill in the invoice for them (yes they expect you to do their invoicing), fill in the invoice for yourself as subcontractor, fill in a timesheet (I don’t know for what as you are paid per job, and you have to do a separate invoice to get paid). And all of that will give you 40£ IF you have marked the EICR as satisfactory. I could add that you are expected to supply everything you need, including, van, fuel, tablet, work phone, tools, PPE, etc. After they agreed to pay the unsatisfactory EICRs, they called me to tell me that my UTR is not valid. Then that is not CIS registered, and it is so they had to hold 30% of my earnings. Considering that my HMRC approved accountant has confirmed in writing to me that the UTR is CIS registered and I have been paid thru it before, I could not trust them any further. They gave me a van stock after they realized I cannot pass the EICRs if there are faults. By that time I already had enough of them. I have only received 30% of payments and had to keep the van stock until they decide to give me what I am owed

And under the new Social Housing Act owner occupiers will have to have the same checks done if their flat is in a block and others are social housing. Lets see if the social housing "freebies" like these checks done by these "contractors" are something to be jealous of once a few owner occupiers have to experience them!!!

There’s zero sympathy for the squeezed middle so why should they feel sympathy for others? It’s got bad enough that we all just care about ourselves now.

roarrfeckingroar · 18/12/2023 18:36

@JenniferBooth you're in housing subsidised by the state (net contributing taxpayers). Of course people are annoyed / jealous.

SH tenants pay tax too. They also pay rent.

JenniferBooth · 18/12/2023 18:39

@roarrfeckingroar If someone with four kids wants my little one bedroom flat they can have it Do you think thats likely? DH is 73 so retired. And being child free by choice i havent used any maternity services. I also pay for my own Mini Pill Hana from Boots. So i think it evens out.

I see the SH is FREE HOUSING and they are all on BENEFITS crew have rocked up to show how bloody thick they are.

Christmasbrie · 18/12/2023 18:44

I kind of agree with the poster on that thread though. My parents had a life time tenancy and my brother stayed living with them into adulthood because he wanted to. He then 'inherited' the tenancy even though he earns £60k and could afford somewhere else. Sure he's a minority I'm more than sure, but even though he pays 'full' rent it's half the price of private rentals in the area and of course gets the stability etc. I don't think it's fair necessarily when the lists are so long and people are living in unsuitable conditions that it just passes on because of the type of contract some were fortunate to have.

JenniferBooth · 18/12/2023 18:46

I live in unsuitable conditions but that hasnt stopped me being treated like shit on here We really need a bungalow due to DHs disabilities

OP posts:
tiggergoesbounce · 18/12/2023 18:48

I think alot of it appears to be ignorance. Also the last few years has been made to pit one against another in this country. If its the poor taking all your money, or disabled or the immigrants you are being made to blame eschother to distract from the failings of the government providing adequately for us.

Some people sadly just cant understand someones circumstance other than their own, a very narrow minded approach to life.
