MN hiding threads on the Gaza situation

Another thread has been hidden whilst MN looks at it. Like the others, it won't reappear.

At what point does MN decide to hide a thread - and why? Is it because they think that it's getting too aggressive? Do they get reports of antisemitism on it ?

It does seem that a lot of these threads are being hidden - which does stifle the conversation.

OTOH - these threads are targets for people to post controversial opinions and to post and spread fake news.

I think when the thread starts to have more holes than a pair of fishnets

plotz · 14/10/2023 09:22

I could be wrong but in this case it's maybe because there's multiple threads all about the same issue. There are two (if not three) very good ones happening at the moment that haven't descended into mayhem.

I have also noticed at least two new ones as well where the OP claims to know nothing and wants to be 'educated' which inevitably (on such a contentious issue) is likely to descend into shouting within minutes.

My best guess is that MN only really needs a couple of threads on the same issue.

BeckyAMumsnet · 14/10/2023 15:41

Hello @cakeorwine the threads are usually hidden by our filters. We then review them before deciding to reinstate them. If there are specific threads you would like us to look at first, please let us know.

cakeorwine · 16/10/2023 07:40

Another 3 gone

Is it automatic? Looks like an easy way for someone to get a thread hidden.

Why is the thread about the American boy being stabbed hidden?

HebeMumsnet · 16/10/2023 09:15

Hi again @cakeorwine . Yes, those will have been hidden automatically by our filters by the looks of it. We will go through them and make a decision on whether or not they can be put back or stay down.

@Liloandswitch Again, if it's been 'hidden' rather than taken down it's likely our filters have done that and we'll review it as soon as we can. If it's been deleted we'd usually give a reason but you're welcome to drop us a line by hitting the report button or sending us a link, particularly if it's your thread, and we might be able to tell you more.

Another one gone this morning.

How long do you take to look at them?

OP posts:
Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 13:25

One was started by a banned user and it contained racism, hate speech and antisemitism. There were multiple reports made because of this.

It didn’t take long for posters on the thread to look at it and see it was a problem hence the reports.

I’d imagine Mumsnet have to do due diligence to make sure they are making a considered decision about deleting.

How long do you think they should take looking at them? I’d guess it depends on the nuances and complexities of the thread…

Looking forward to MN response.

.

I don’t understand why the thread about identifying antisemitism has been hidden while antisemitic sentiment and incidents are at such an all time high the British government has just provided the CST with £3million of additional funding.

Ecdysiast · 17/10/2023 13:42

Let's talk about nappies and hand lotion, proper MN style

Vettrianofan · 17/10/2023 13:44

This is not unique to Gaza situation. This happens with any given thread. I have lost count the sheer amount of times I have had to put down my phone to get on with family life, get back to my phone and poof! another thread has gone. I hardly get a chance to read the first page!

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 13:53

The topic is irrelevant. It’s application of rules/guidelines.

If a nappies and hand lotion threads had multiple racist, hate speech and antisemitic posts / got taken over by trolls, it would be hidden / deleted.

If the criticism of Israel (or any other government) is considered hate speech, then I think there is no freedom of speech on Mumsnet. So let's talk about pretty dresses and whether the other mum in my playgroup was slighting me...

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 14:27

The posts I refer to were not criticism.

As I pointed out there were racist, hate speech

and

antisemitic

posts

Not conflating the three…

There were posts that were not antisemitic but that still broke the rules / guidelines.

The thread was taken down on the basis it had been started by a previously banned poster - it also broke the rules / guidelines due to posts in those three categories.

If you ask for further clarification you may get it from MN.

I believe they give more feedback to the original poster so that may or may not have been done already.

Ecdysiast · 17/10/2023 14:29

@Enyo2 If there is a post with hate speech, they can delete the post - they don't need to delete the whole thread!

I would like to see this thread reinstated. I mean, there absolutely was rampant antisemitism on it, but I think it was highly illustrative of the types of explicit abuse and more covert prejudices British Jews deal with, not just the current situation but in their daily lives in general. There were a lot of excellent posts about what does, and doesn't, constitute antisemitism.

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 14:37

As I explained the thread was taken down due to being posted by a banned user.

There were multiple reports of racism, hate speech and antisemitism. These led to the individual posts being deleted, then the thread being hidden, then deleted probably because MN found it had been put up by a banned poster.

There’s a direct email address to MN and you can send them an email or @HQ then here.Good luck and I hope you get the answers you need :)

They might be fairly busy at the moment. This does tend to happen when there's something big going on.

AirGapped · 17/10/2023 14:40

The thread about recognising antisemitism was not started by a previously banned poster, but perhaps it became overrun by trolls.

Thanks, I already emailed them and received a reply. They were just as vague as you.

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 14:46

O that made me laugh. Well at least they get paid to “be vague”

I was genuinely attempting to be helpful :)

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 14:59

However it is an unpleasant thing to say. Let’s try to be civil and respectful and not fall out :)

Thanks for trying to help and apologies for my use of language. I didn't know that "vague" was an uncivil term.

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 15:11

It was “you were as vague as them” which was uncivil given I was trying to be helpful, genuinely.

Thank you for an apology for that. It is much appreciated :)

PeakABoocha · 17/10/2023 15:12

I noticed MN hasn’t been back to say how long it usually take fir them to look at threads and decide if tte stay or not.

If all the threads are automatically hidden and never make it back (or take a week by which time things will have moved on) then MN IS stifling discussion on the subject.

@HebeMumsnet, @MNHQ care to comment??
