"boomer" thread

You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

Just out of interest - do you all believe it’s unacceptable to ever note a generalised pattern of behaviour among a group of people who share a common feature? As it’s an -ism? I’m just curious as to where you draw the line, or whether you’re drawing it here because this particular feature applies to you.

As I've already said previously, I'm only 49 and have two young children, I still find ageism offensive!
And no I don't like generalisation of any demographic!

Ah, ok. So no more ‘badly behaved children’ thread, no more ‘the problem with men’ threads, no more ‘bloody politicians’ type threads, no more ‘school gate mums’ threads?

Maireas · 31/08/2023 15:28

Eh? We can go on whatever threads we like. We're individual people. With differing opinions on issues, I'm sure.

Yep @Maireas ! , should have listened to previous poster , can't debate stupid! 🙄

But you’d consider them discriminatory, no?

What are you on about?
I join in whatever threads interest me.
If I see posts that I consider to be sexist, misogynist, homophobic, racist, anti migrant, whatever...I challenge those posts. I'm not sure what's so difficult to understand about people who don't want prejudice and discrimination to be acceptable.

I'd hope most decent human beings would band together and call out any offensive -isms, whether the particular -ism applied to them or not.

I'm not disabled. I'm not black. I'm not fat.

But yes, if I see someone online being abused and insulted because of any of those things, then I'll step in. Surely you would too?

Remember the old adage. "for evil to proliferate, all it takes is for good men to do nothing".

I won't stand by.

AuntieJoyce · 31/08/2023 15:36

I always make it a golden rule, not to respond to any post, which ends with “, no?”

It has served me well, thus far

Do you think the threads making sweeping generalisations about men are prejudiced?

Which thread in particular?

Ageism, racism, disablism are factually discriminatory.

I don't "consider" them to be so. The (fairly) decent society I live in, and am part of, has decided that, y'know, it's a bit off to insult someone because of their age, sex, ability, or colour.

Then I look forward to you calling out threads that make sweeping generalisations about children, teenagers, men, and all the rest of it.

I feel the same, @TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon .

generalised pattern of behaviour among a group of people who share a common feature?

Attaching a generalised pattern of behaviour to a group of people who share a common feature is usually, at best, stereotyping. So if I say that millennials are all avocado eaters, that would be stereotyping.

Ahh I see !!! , your one of those posters, well my mistake for not realising earlier! 🤷‍♀️

Sadly, we would have to spend all our time on here to do that.

It is more productive to focus on calling out the more harmful and bigoted posts that appear on MN. Luckily there are a lot of good folk who will speak out against the latter. However, ageism does not seem as much of a concern at times, so a few of us agreeing to address that and raise more awareness is a good thing.

I'm on at least 2 today about children. One about shock horror, a man going to someone's house, and yet another one about foreigners.

I teach 300 teenagers a week. As I've often said. Love the little fuckers. Even the ones with bigoted parents. Not their fault after all if their parents are as thick as shit and should be prosecuted for their foul ideas.

And I've always defended the right of men to be on MN. As with most things in life. There's Lee Anderson, and then there's Keanu.

If Keanu started spewing bile about old people, or the disabled, then that'd be different.

It would be ageist stereotyping yes.

There's only one person who has posted on this thread actually saying that. And it wasn't a common or garden Mumsnetter.

PS "if" "would be" = second conditional hypothesis. The unreal present.

Edited

Why is somebody calling something frumpy on style and beauty more harmful than calling small children feral? I’m just trying to understand where you draw the line of offence in your mind, or whether it’s ring fenced to unflattering comments about age because that’s what you take the most personally.

Did I say you weren’t?

IClaudine · 31/08/2023 15:50

I feel that jamtartforme doesn't like the idea of us working together to combat ageism on MN and wants to turn it into yet another negative against us.

Won't wash.
