You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

Gif for poor poster having to deal with fat people obvs, not for our quiche.

sunglassesonthetable · 31/08/2023 12:31

@Maireas She's laughing about it now. Her grandchildren think she's great . 😁👍🏻

What's a quiche ?

sunglassesonthetable · 31/08/2023 12:32

oh and me! Sounds like I don't.

Thank you for asking x

Maireas · 31/08/2023 12:37

Badly behaved kids thread - apparently it's older people complaining about children, although "nothing to do with ageism"🙄

OP posts:
jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 12:42

Yep @Maireas , I've seen it too!
It was quite a nice all children behave the same ..... then boom!

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/08/2023 12:44

Oh dear, keeping out of that post.

jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 12:47

I'm now making a note of the names!

Maireas · 31/08/2023 13:02

Good call, @jeffgoldblum - oh yes "back in my day".
As. If.

jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 13:07

I'm going to be honest @Maireas , until you pointed it out, I hadn't noticed how many ageist comments there were ! ( maybe because they were not addressed to me , I know selfish!)
But now !!! Well it's every where! , I can't unsee it now 😡

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 31/08/2023 13:14

@sunglassesonthetable

Years ago I think someone had a typo for "clique" and it stuck in Mumsnet mythology 😂

Maireas · 31/08/2023 13:16

@jeffgoldblum - it's been getting worse. It's totally acceptable now. That last deleted thread was, for me, the final straw.

get it 👍🏻😁

jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 13:24

Dare I say it ..@Maireas , it's a bit like the way the rf topic is going, so toxic that I rarely post there anymore, I still read it , think hang on , then I'm why even bother!

Maireas · 31/08/2023 13:27

Yes, too true, @jeffgoldblum .
I think describing Camilla as "the old bag on the throne" was a bit of a turning point for me, really.

OP posts:
jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 13:30

Yes awful!!! And I seem to recall her also being described as a leathery old handbag!

IClaudine · 31/08/2023 13:31

I am totally up for batting back against ageist posts. We can mark them with a 💥. Turn the tables on Slug's use of it. Reclaim the 💥!

jeffgoldblum · 31/08/2023 13:33

@IClaudine 👍, ironically when I was typing boom , my auto thingy on my iPhone brought up ' boomers' and that symbol!!! 💥
Maybe Apple are ageist too! 😱

sunglassesonthetable · 31/08/2023 13:35

love 💥

I'm up for that 💥.

greenhydrangea · 31/08/2023 14:13

Ka-boom! 💥

BestIsWest · 31/08/2023 15:06

💥just practicing. I still get incensed that I was deleted for calling out ageism in S&B

Jamtartforme · 31/08/2023 15:08

Just out of interest - do you all believe it’s unacceptable to ever note a generalised pattern of behaviour among a group of people who share a common feature? As it’s an -ism? I’m just curious as to where you draw the line, or whether you’re drawing it here because this particular feature applies to you.

ilovesooty · 31/08/2023 15:11

💥💥Oh that's where that GF got it from.

Maireas · 31/08/2023 15:13

Would you apply that particular concern to people challenging racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia or whatever, @Jamtartforme ?
Do we all have to declare our ages? Do you ask these questions of people challenging homophobia - "do you have an interest to declare?". Nope.
Maybe people just don't like prejudice.
Stereotyping in an offensive way.
Maybe women have to act together to fight sexism. I think that's laudable.

do you all believe

I can't speak for anyone else, but I really don't see much point in debating stereotyping with you. I don't think it would be productive.
