"boomer" thread

You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

Jeez. I have just read @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet responses. Sorry Becky, but what a load of rubbish. There was absolute outright hatred on the WFA thread which was so obviously started by a troll.

I don't see many threads deliberately trying to spark hate towards Millennials.

justasking111 · 29/08/2023 13:01

I kind of get where Justine is coming from. It's Mumsnet not gransnet

So we should all just fuck off to a different forum then?

angeltulips · 29/08/2023 14:04

Maireas · 29/08/2023 14:01

No. That's generalisation.
Not all older people are rich, not all younger people are feckless.

this is the economic equivalent of NAMALT.

No of course not everyone is the same. But as a cohort it is objectively true that Boomers are significantly better off than younger generations. Winter fuel allowance is a classic example of why that needs to be debated, as is whether pensioners should have to sell their house and other assets to pay for care.

Maireas · 29/08/2023 14:06

No, @angeltulips . I refuse to be tarred with that brush.
Don't blame a generation, many of whom had very little. Blame Thatcherism, blame class inequality, blame the raging and out of control capitalism...but don't blame all the over 55s. You know nothing of our struggle.
I certainly wouldn't stereotype a generation for wasting money on avocados.

OP posts:
IClaudine · 29/08/2023 14:06

It's also been cited by several global, reputable orgs that generations are becoming poorer than their parents. We think it's something that understandably worries a lot of people including many MNers

Honest to God. Do you think none of us understand that? Yes, it is something that invites discussion, but not the absolute bile that is spewed on here about older people.

Maireas · 29/08/2023 14:01

Nobody is saying they are. But that doesn't mean that economic and social trends do not exist. It would be impossible to do any kind of analysis of social or economic trends without considering general attitbutes, attitudes, average incomes or wealth etc at different times and in different cohorots, as an average. For anybody to take personal insult from that because they happen to be an outlier is bizarre, because there will always be outliers.

Looks like it. Handing over our homes and savings while we're at it.

I think it might be time. The site beginning with T looks gentle in comparison to some of the shite that is given a free pass here.

WarOnTheSlugs · 29/08/2023 14:09

This is exactly the type of hyperbole that stifles reasoned debate, and has been a large contributor to these issues not being addressed in a timely manner when the obvious solutions would have been easier and more affordable for everyone to implement.

Maireas · 29/08/2023 14:10

Reasonable debate, @WarOnTheSlugs ?
You have consistently stereotyped and apportioned blame - to one generation.
That is the very opposite of reasoned debate. "Blame the over 55s".

i don’t understand your point; could you clarify?

Maybe we're being encouraged to push off to gransnet?

justasking111 · 29/08/2023 14:15

Maybe. I’ve got another 15 years of work until I can take my pension, and I’ll never be a gran, not being a mum, but maybe this place is so ageist that even in my early 50s, I’m too old for it. It’s a shame, because people here have actually thanked me for advice I’ve offered in the past. Maybe they didn’t realise how decrepit and despicable I actually am.

Maybe next door to gransnet.

WarOnTheSlugs · 29/08/2023 14:19

Thank you for your answer.

I have certainly actively campaigned in many of the ways you suggested. How nice to know I'm not personally to blame then.

If you did campaign to redesign the public systems we have like pensions and healthcare to make them sustainably funded, back when it could have been done 30+ years ago, and raise taxes on the adults working then to pay their own costs, then thank you. At least somebody tried. I remember as a child in the 80s campaigning on climate change. Given a Blue Peter badge for it 🤣 but all ignored by the adults and no changes made. Nobody was pushing politicians to raise their tax to actually maintain and improve our infrastructure, to fund education properly, to ensure energy and food security for the future. To design a tax system that encouraged investment so that productivity and real-terms salaries would rise. For an affordable childcare system. For a tax system that doesn't penalise single adult households.

If you did do this then I'm very grateful to you and I wish others in your cohort had listened to you.

No thanks because I don't want to be part of a forum defined solely by age.

It's getting beyond a joke now. I've got broad shoulders but as an older woman it's depressing AF to see the dislike and sheer vitriol from other women aimed at women like me. We're verging on senile, if not already there, selfish, taking up properties families can make better use of, daring to take the pensions we worked for and according to the meno board, lucky not to have collapsed into a heap of bone dust by the time we're 70. And living too long, of course.

I don't think I've ever seen a site as bad as this for ageism.

Yes, and the prejudice usually comes from those who are virtue signalling about other things.......saving the planet, pensioners enjoying taking foreign holidays (oh, the horror of it!), etc. etc. Solidarity of women? Nah, I don't think so...there are so many bitter people out there.

This thread though is not about that. Unfortunately it’s spawned into a discussion thread when it was clearly aimed at MNHQ to express concerns.

@WarOnTheSlugs has been inundating this thread with post after post when a separate thread to discuss inter generational wealth disparity would be a far more appropriate home for this.

How precisely does this add balance? Just sounds like more criticising tbh
