"boomer" thread

You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

Think they have had so many reports about it.

Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:35

Yes, I'm not surprised, based on the comments. I don't understand the difference between "hidden" and "deleted" though?

It's getting beyond a joke now. I've got broad shoulders but as an older woman it's depressing AF to see the dislike and sheer vitriol from other women aimed at women like me. We're verging on senile, if not already there, selfish, taking up properties families can make better use of, daring to take the pensions we worked for and according to the meno board, lucky not to have collapsed into a heap of bone dust by the time we're 70. And living too long, of course.

I don't think I've ever seen a site as bad as this for ageism.

I think, but I'm not sure, that the nightwatch don't have the ability to delete so they hide until a MN staff can review it?

I could be wrong though

moomoosaka · 28/08/2023 20:37

I'm wondering if the thread automatically gets hidden if it gets enough reports? And then someone has to look at it to review it?

Westfacing · 28/08/2023 20:39

The OP was full of cliches and didn't ring true - designed to start a bun fight.

That was obvious but what gets me down is the nastiness of starting a thread saying all that. Even if the parents don't exist someone thinks people like me are like that and has no hesitation slagging us off.

Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:47

I couldn't agree more, @MrsDanversGlidesAgain . It's so offensive, to be stereotyped as greedy, stupid, selfish women, deliberately ruining society for the next generation, basking in our undeserved riches. Unacceptable.
My last post on the thread asked - what age and generation are the climate change scientists?

OP posts:
Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:49

Every generation has it's challenges. It was no fun growing up as a girl in the 70s, and for my gay cousin, an absolute nightmare. These ludicrous, entrenched attitudes are actually very offensive.

Adding my voice (thanks @Maireas for starting this thread)

There have been countless awful, offensive, insulting threads about older people this last few days alone. I've been on most of them and I know the people posting here have too.

It is relentless at the moment. It's tired (and usually untrue) stereotypes and it makes me sick to my stomach to think that there are actually people (mothers of children if the demographic is to be believed) who really think like this about anyone over the age of about 40.

Nobody on here can have a whinge about their neighbours without it being necessary to say they're old, and fill the post with vile ageist language. Often misogynistic too.

I reported a post from someone a few days ago who was calling an older woman all the names under the sun. The post is still there.

The swimming pool thread yesterday plummeted very quickly into any older man anywhere near children is a sex fiend and paedophile (despite the less interesting truth being that your child's 17 year old cousin is statistically about 80% more likely to try and sexually assault your son/daughter)

Ageism is the last -ism seemingly accepted on MN. It used to be dealt with, posts used to be deleted. Now the people reporting them get a telling off.

They hide it because its been reported then if/when they find fault they put up the deleted message.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 28/08/2023 20:52

(and the same old names - no pun intended) crop up on any dog whistle thread where they see the possibility of abusing the elderly and getting their boot in)

Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:52

Thanks, @Mrsjayy

I didn’t see the thread, but ageism is absolutely rife on MN. It’s truly awful on some threads, and I do report as much as I can. It’s not always dealt with though.

StopStartStop · 28/08/2023 20:54

I missed it! Gutted. 65 and used to all the nonsense from intolerant youth.

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/08/2023 20:54

The deleted message has now come up.

SquirrelSoShiny · 28/08/2023 20:54

I didn't read the thread you mean but I'm suddenly the age where you begin to see casual ageism everywhere. My absolute pet hate is seeing young women using the Karen thing. It's depressing.

No one ever really believes they're going to get older until suddenly we do! This is accelerated by a decade with disabilities.

Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:55

I do wonder what they think we were doing when we were on the front line of feminism, campaigning against nuclear proliferation, against homophobia, fighting for equality in the workplace, for women's refuges, for women's voices about assault and harassment to be heard. Nothing landed in our laps as they continually like to claim.

AlisonDonut · 28/08/2023 20:57

I read it and thought 'Chat GPT'.

Maireas · 28/08/2023 20:57

I'm glad it's been deleted. There was an awful Karen thread this week. Just dreadful. Other examples on at least three other current threads.

I said on the deleted thread I blame Social Media mainly tik tok for all the Karen nonsense it rose through the pandemic. Now any woman who isn't 35 and has an Opinion Is a Karen (or Boomer)

EbiRaisukaree · 28/08/2023 21:00

I’ve had to hide the awful winter fuel allowance thread. It was so full of vitriol towards older people and I got way too frustrated arguing with the rabid ageists. It’s amazing, isn’t it, how all this stuff is so often allowed to stand, where no other prejudice would be (oh, except misogyny, but we are clearly some way off being able to tackle that, realistically, even on this forum).

Dotcheck · 28/08/2023 21:01

Excellent the ageist thread is deleted. Shame @mnhq is happy to let accent hating threads stand.
Double standards at work.

But I am genuinely glad that ageism was zapped

I read about that but wasn't going to go looking for it. Happens every year - bloody rich pensioners worth millions in big houses getting a couple of hundred quid they don't need and it ought to be means tested with vitriol thrown in probably about covers it, I guess?
