If you tag a poster using the @ symbol, it's impossible to delete it

DingsBum · 11/05/2023 21:53

So ie if I'm replying to a post and tag the wrong poster, then go to delete it and tag the right poster - once the @whoever has gone bold it won't delete.

Does that make any sense? So now, if I wanted to delete @whoever in the paragraph above, I can't. It won't delete. If I make a mistake with a tag when typing a reply, the only way to edit before posting is to cut the entire reply, paste into a google doc, delete the tag, paste back into the reply box.

Using latest version of Chrome on an up to date S10.

Needmorelego · 11/05/2023 21:54

Yes I get that too. I think my phone is S10 too.

LilyMumsnet · 11/05/2023 21:57

Hello

Thanks so much for this, OP.

I don't have the issue on chrome desktop so sounds like it may be a device problem. Are you able to try clearing your cache whilst we look into it - just to see if it makes a difference?

DingsBum · 11/05/2023 22:05

@LilyMumsnet just cleared cache, logged out, logged back in. Still the same problem. I'm on the mobile site so maybe it's a mobile site issue?

Hi OP

Please can we ask if you have grammarly?

DingsBum · 12/05/2023 23:05

I don't even know what grammarly is! So...I don't think so?

OP posts:
DingsBum · 15/05/2023 11:05

@LilyMumsnet any update on this? I've googled grammarly and no, I do not have it.

I get this too, very annoying

gamerchick · 15/05/2023 11:08

You could try not tagging people. Just use the * button if you to bold a name. A lot of people find being tagged annoying anyway.

HebeMumsnet · 15/05/2023 11:40

Hi again @DingsBum . This is a keyboard extension that sometimes seems to just toggle itself on on your device, uninvited, during an update. It's caused problems like this for a few Samsung users.

There are instructions for disabling it here, if that's what's happened in your case. If you could give that a go, that might just solve it but please do come back to us if it doesn't and we'll have another think.

Grammarly on Keyboard

New update today has installed something called Grammarly on my keyboard - I went into the Keyboard settings > Third party content and switched it off, but it STILL persists when I'm typing messages. How can I get rid of it completely please?

I very rarely tag people and when I do it's to (for example) answer a specific question that they've asked further up a thread or similar reason. Usually I'd quote their post instead, but sometimes I can't be arsed scrolling back up to find it and it's easier to tag them.

I'm not using the Samsung keyboard. I have gboard installed as my default keyboard and am using that.

@HebeMumsnet
Just to make sure though, I've followed those instructions to turn off the grammarly powered extension for all apps, and the problem still persists. It can't be to do with Samsung keyboard because I don't use the Samsung keyboard!

Just came on here to say I have this problem and it's so annoying as you then can't reply to the thread as you can't remove the incorrect tag! Once it's there it's impossible to delete unless you can go on incognito mode so no cache but then you need to log in again. Clearly some buggy code which doesn't work with android (I use Pixel). If it were iPhone I bet it would be fixed right away as all the apple sheep would be complaining. 🤔

zaxxon · 05/01/2025 08:49

Yes, I get this too, it's annoying. Am using an Android phone (Motorola).

HebeMumsnet · 06/01/2025 12:05

Hi there @Namechangey23 and @zaxxon. We're working on a fix for this as we speak. No date for a fix just yet but it is in train.

@HebeMumsnet any update on a fix for this? It's driving me round the bend, I actually sometimes have to give up on posting a reply because the wrong poster has tagged and then there is literally no way to delete it.

OP posts:
HebeMumsnet · 17/03/2025 11:31

Hi there @DingsBum. We have released a fix for this now. There is a bin icon in the message field - just below the message itself. If you tag someone, you can select the bin icon and this will clear all text (not just the username) in the message field. So it's still slightly fiddly if you have typed any more than the username but if you just copy any text from the message that you want without the username, then hit the bin icon you can paste back the part of the message you still want.

CaptainBeanThief · 17/03/2025 11:33

This happens to me too, I have a Google pixel 7a,
You can manage to delete sometimes but it's very very difficult and only on the off chance. I thought it was only me.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 01:20

I'm having the same problem and the bin icon doesn't work. Also, if I choose the @ symbol to tag someone it repeats their name over and over again and mixes in my text with their name and keeps saying "mentions" with brackets. I'm using a Huawei android mobile phone.

Queenanne20 · 18/03/2025 01:28

Could we just check if this is the mobile site or app you're using?

LilyMumsnet · 18/03/2025 18:50

@Queenanne20 ignore this one, just a test

Queenanne20 · 19/03/2025 17:15

I'm still having terrible issues with tagging people. Surely I can't be the only one this is happening to?
