Moderation Sex Board

onirgellep · 13/04/2023 23:06

Back in February Justine* committed to an urgent review of moderation of the Sex Board subsequent to the considerable concerns mainly arising from the longstanding Sex Chat thread

Unsurprisingly, issues continue

Would it be possible to have an update on the progress of the review?

And hear when do you anticipate it being completed and the new moderation put into action?

Thank you

I'm afraid I'm unable to link Justine's post on the thread References to Underage Sex on the Sex Board* page 13

I hope you have reported that thread @Surplus2requirements

But is that proportionate to the risk? Entering credit card details before joining MN, they'll never do that. It would put so many people off and presumably have all sorts of Data Protection and storage implications for MN.

Depends on the size of the risk, which depends largely on the kind of content MN decide to host.

CC verification doesn't normally expose your data to the individual website, it's done by secure third parties. It's still a data protection nightmare but it wouldn't have data protection or storage implications for MN.

No, it has many hundreds of posts on it and has probably been read by thousands before I read it and to be honest, while I was a little surprised to see it on such a busy board it hadn't occurred to me children might read it.

Are we just talking about the sex board or the whole of MN?

There's a months old thread in Chat that details a man performing analingus on a women. It's more descriptive than anything I've read on the sex board.

What was mumsnets response when you reported it? Strange they didn’t even move it to the sex topic after your report, that’s their usual response.

OMG. You didn’t report it? Wow.

horridjobescapee · 15/04/2023 22:13

Why didn't you report it? That's absolutely shocking that you didn't think it was inappropriate.

Yep, my bad...and however many hundreds of other MN users.

Unless it was reported and HQ chose to leave it.

You didn’t report? You thought it was suitable for the chat topic? Jesus Christ.

horridjobescapee · 15/04/2023 22:17

And that's why I look at the sex board.

Because you cannot trust that anyone else will have reported something. Even if it is grossly inappropriate.

I hope you have reported it now @Surplus2requirements

But you’re the one here saying you saw it. You admit you were surprised so you knew it wasn’t appropriate. Yet you did nothing. That’s dreadful.

I will look for the thread and report it.

horridjobescapee · 15/04/2023 22:19

I'm actually stunned.

I'm stunned that anyone could see such a thread anywhere on mumsnet and think it was not worth reporting.

If children access this site, and we know they do, children might read such a thread.

LangClegsInSpace · 15/04/2023 22:20

That illustrates one of the biggest issues with the sex topic - the way certain attitudes and standards become normalised across the site.

I have no objection to anyone reporting anywhere, I never have

horridjobescapee · 15/04/2023 22:21

@Surplus2requirements so you saw the thread, realised it was inappropriate and didn't report it. And even after the comments on THIS thread about you not reporting it, you STILL aren't going to report it?

Why?

It's the one about the cheating rugby league player filmed in an alleyway. I don't recall the title. Sorry if that's not much help

This. 100% this.

TheBayTreeMurder · 15/04/2023 22:25

And this is why it's laughable that the sex people think they can moderate themselves.

We've got a man here who doesn't feel the need to report something on a parenting site that by his own admission said surprised him to see.

It just erodes womens boundaries ever more and yet ... still they do it

Surplus2requirements · 15/04/2023 22:25

TheShellBeach · 15/04/2023 22:22

You've never reported anything?

Yes I've reported, I've never objected to others reporting.

horridjobescapee · 15/04/2023 22:27

I'm so shocked and disgusted I'm speechless.

This is how abuse is perpetrated. Because people stand back and don't do anything.

You see a thread. You recognise that there is a description of a sex act on it in lurid detail. You are surprised (?) at this. But you don't do the logical thing and report it, since it is hosted on a website that children have access to.

What on earth have we become.

Yes.
I hope MNHQ takes careful note of this.

MassiveWordSalad · 15/04/2023 22:28

One way to deal with the risk to underage users would be to get rid of the sex topic. It's not always been here; it doesn't have to stay here.

MNHQ have said they don't want to limit what adults talk about and so on, but this is not a place where freedom of speech reigns. There are rules, there is supposed to be an ethos and a community spirit has developed since MN was founded. That spirit is rooted in the safeguarding of women and children with a strong current of feminism. The spirit of the sex topic is not in alignment with the site as a whole, and the users of the sex topic are not representative of MN users.

I've said it before, but yes, MN users sometimes need to ask about and discuss things of a sexual nature. We can continue to do this without a sex board, as we did before the sex board existed, by asking on another topic where the discussion will hopefully stay below the radar. I would much rather do that and have a higher chance of having that discussion with people who I consider to be typical Mumsnet users - my peers, if you will. If that discussion were considered beyond the pale, it would be reported and deleted very quickly.

I do wonder if MN are just happy to let the sex topic drive traffic to the site, despite that traffic not being suited to the MN ethos, and that is very sad.

TheBayTreeMurder · 15/04/2023 22:31

@MassiveWordSalad I agree. The sex forum should just go and along with it, you'd get rid of the men who hang around waiting for their sexual needs to be met
