MNHQ want to know what you think

Hi all,

We’d like to hear what you think of our Last day, Last hour and Unanswered threads lists. You can find them by visiting Active on a desktop device. We’d like to get a sense of why you use them, as well as what you use them for. If you don’t use them, or didn’t know that they existed, that’s helpful for us to know too!

Could you spare a couple of minutes to reply with answers to the following questions? If you’d like to answer but don’t feel comfortable sharing here, feel free to PM me with your responses.

  1. Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?
  2. Which of these lists do you visit?
  3. If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
  4. If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
  5. If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?

Please do share any other thoughts you have about these lists. Any and all feedback is helpful.

Thank you!

Unanswered thread is a bit hidden compared to last hour or last day. It used to be on the same line (years ago) , but is now in a drop arrow.
I don't really use the last day or last hour, but do visit unanswered because I know how horrible it is to start a thread and nobody answers it.
So to answer your questions

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?
Ultra new for last hour, created last 24 hours for last day, and unanswered is in the name
Which of these lists do you visit?
Unanswered because many years ago, there was a post, I believe from MN, inviting members to go there and post a comment
If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
Once or twice a day
If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
The same reason we come on MN!
If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?
Last day or last hour don't have an appeal to me

Thanks so much @TheExistentialistCafé! This is really helpful 🙏

I'm on a desktop and can see 'last hour' and 'last day' but not 'unanswered threads' which used to be there, and is now not. Another poster mentions an arrow but I don't have that.

Which is a pity, because it is the only one I did look at regularly. The other two I don't use at all.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 16/02/2023 19:15

I must say I find the site clunky on desktop and really don't like it. Not the point of the thread I know.

TheExistentialistCafé · 16/02/2023 19:30

@larchforest
It is the arrow next to TALK . Click on the arrow, and this is where you will find unanswered threads

Well, this is not how the pictures looked in the preview 😖

NewChange · 16/02/2023 19:33

Never noticed either of them

NewChange · 16/02/2023 19:35

*any of them

i just click on active and see what’s new. Last day / last hour is meaningless to me

Unanswered sounds likely to be dull

BertieBotts · 16/02/2023 19:37

Never used them. Didn't know they were still there - I remember unanswered threads getting a call out every so often in the old days! I miss that... We should do it again.

I don't understand what makes last hour or day different from active.

Found it now, thanks.

CherrySocks · 16/02/2023 20:21

I always go direct to Last Hour, and then maybe afterwards to Last Day.

I didn't know where Unanswered Threads had gone but have found it now from the big arrow drop down next to big Talk.

Scaevola · 16/02/2023 20:26

I visit Unanswered Threads quite often.

Because I don't like to think of posts attracting no response.

What I miss, though, is that it now shows only the last 100. Before, it used to show all in the last 5 days (or so) and we used to have threads with titles like "173 unanswered threads! Lets answer them!" and people did

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/02/2023 20:33

Mumsnet users would equally like to know what MNHQ think right now - specifically on the Sex topic and the Nicola Bulley threads. We're not getting much back from you HQ! could you please treat us as equals.

Nimbostratus100 · 16/02/2023 20:34

never heard of these lists and cant find them

CC4712 · 16/02/2023 20:47

I only ever look at the threads I'm on, or the active discussions- never thought to search out for specific themes, nor have I ever heard of these ones! I don't recall EVER seeing them within the day to day posts? 🤔

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them? I assume that last day and last hour is how long the post will be displayed for? I also guess unanswered is just that.
Which of these lists do you visit? None!
If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why? Never heard of any of them, and would never specifically seek them out.

My ONE request from MNHQ would be to PLEASE have a section for TFMR- like other, similar sites. 'Pregnancy choices' is not the appropriate place to be asking for advice for TFMR, as the audience and motives behind decisions are often completely different, the advice and links for support are VERY different also. Thanks.

Coming on to post exactly this

Dontsparethehorses · 17/02/2023 01:38

I would love to know % of mn users from desktop as a pose to mobile devices. I guess that is because I don’t remember the last time I logged on from a laptop but use phone/iPad most days. I therefore don’t use any of the features because they aren’t available. I think of any of them though I would use unanswered more than last day/ last hour. Interested how last hour is different from active generally in terms of posts it shows.

TheExistentialistCafé · 17/02/2023 04:34

@Dontsparethehorses my guess would be that last hour are for thread created in the last hour, whereas Active might be an old thread with an update or a week old ongoing thread that has traffic on it.
What I can't find on the other hand is the "The wide awake club " category. I can find the topic, but not the wider umbrella under which it is. Sleeps evades me since its creation!

For what concerns, sex, sex toys or whatever sex related argument , who cares? MN is a forum, it doesn't promote an ideology, A topic annoys you, ignore it. It interests you, post to your heart's content.

Thank you that makes more sense! So they would appear in active but they are likely to stay for longer because less will have been created than responded too. I have no idea about wide awake topic but clearly also struggle with sleep 😂

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/02/2023 05:30

On the few occasions I use a laptop, I look at Last Hour to see if there are threads without hundreds of answers which could benefit from my infinite wisdom Grin
Threads where people are still piling on 10 pages in having only read the OP make me a bit ragey.

Didn't know there was an unanswered threads section.

I use the app and could really do with it having some more functionality to bring it in line with the desktop.

You see the 'big name' posters again and again on so many threads , I can only assume they are ones using the desktop site.

When I've compared 'Active' on the app, it's not moving anywhere near as fast as the 'last hour' or 'trending' topics on the desktop.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/02/2023 05:34

I only really log on from my mobile because the ads are too big & intrusive on desktop. If there was an obvious way to see unanswered threads / last day / last hour from there I’d look sometimes.

TriedTurningItOff · 17/02/2023 05:57

Never knew these threads existed. Where?

Oblomov23 · 17/02/2023 06:20

I don't get them, they are not available to me. On my i-phone app I can't get any of them. I only get active, I'm on, topics. So I only search using those options.

Ladybug14 · 17/02/2023 06:27

The desktop version of MN is awful. It's so clunky and somehow old fashioned. I dislike it and rarely use it

The app is great (when it works, but it often freezes and closes itself) but we can't do everything on the app, that we can do on the desktop version

I'm a bit bewildered as to why MN cant be slick and up to date like the other forums I post on

Judgyjudgy · 17/02/2023 06:29

Sorry because I'm not answering your specific question ... but do people really use a desktop? I would assume most people use an app? Anyway that's my contribution 🙈
