MNHQ want to know what you think

Hi all,

We’d like to hear what you think of our Last day, Last hour and Unanswered threads lists. You can find them by visiting Active on a desktop device. We’d like to get a sense of why you use them, as well as what you use them for. If you don’t use them, or didn’t know that they existed, that’s helpful for us to know too!

Could you spare a couple of minutes to reply with answers to the following questions? If you’d like to answer but don’t feel comfortable sharing here, feel free to PM me with your responses.

  1. Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?
  2. Which of these lists do you visit?
  3. If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
  4. If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
  5. If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?

Please do share any other thoughts you have about these lists. Any and all feedback is helpful.

Thank you!

I prefer the desktop. Better for posture!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/02/2023 07:43

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?

Threads created in last day/last hour and threads to which no one has replied.

Which of these lists do you visit?

Unanswered threads

If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?

Randomly, when it occurs to me. - maybe a few times a week

If you do visit them, what do you use them for?

It's rubbish if you start a thread and no one replies, so I like to bump them for the OP. Some of them are interesting thread subjects but they've just been missed. It's satisfying if you bump one and it then picks up

If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?

I don't use created in last day/hour because I prefer to use 'active' to find new threads.

Sorry because I'm not answering your specific question ... but do people really use a desktop? I would assume most people use an app? Anyway that's my contribution 🙈

Yes, always - hate fiddling around with apps.

watcherintherye · 17/02/2023 12:56

I know this isn’t what you asked, but it always amuses me when ‘The Unexplained’ gets used for things like ‘My dh is behaving like an arse, and I don’t know why!’

Yes, I use desktop. Hate apps and never have enough memory on my phone for them

Mulefathethird · 17/02/2023 17:45

I used to look at last day and last hour years ago. I think I've only come across unanswered once. I now use my phone for Mumsnet and don't see any of them last day=threads active in last 24 hours and similar for last hour. Unanswered is only the OPs message

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/02/2023 18:29

@AmeliaPMumsnet Why not put a rotating selection of unanswered threads in a side bar like 'Trending' - you could call it 'Can you help?'.

UsingChangeofName · 17/02/2023 22:03

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them

I presume they do what it says in the title ? Confused

Which of these lists do you visit? Unanswered Threads

If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them? Every night.

If you do visit them, what do you use them for? To see if I can answer any of them (or at the very least, boost them). It must be horrible to pluck up the courage to start a thread which then no-one answers

If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why? The 'Last Hour' and 'Last Day' wouldn't really add anything for me. I use 'Threads I'm on' to see what else people have written / added to the discussion. I use 'Active' to see what is happening afresh that day. There isn't enough time in the day to start looking at every thread that has been written.

Bagzzz · 17/02/2023 22:24

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?
threads started in the last day/hour/self explanatory

Which of these lists do you visit?
none - didn’t know they existed. Use on iPhone through safari. Just found the unanswered questions- do I have access to the others?

If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them? na

If you do visit them, what do you use them for? Na
If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?
didn’t know they existed- not sure I have access to last day or hour.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/02/2023 09:10

I used to go on unanswered threads but haven’t been able to find it easily recently and it’s ever in active conversations so I don’t bother now.

I mn on my phone when I have a minute or two spare. I’m not going hunting for stuff. It has to be easy for me!

BIWI · 18/02/2023 09:28

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/02/2023 20:33

Mumsnet users would equally like to know what MNHQ think right now - specifically on the Sex topic and the Nicola Bulley threads. We're not getting much back from you HQ! could you please treat us as equals.

Like @LindorDoubleChoc and @Rogue1001MNer I'd like to know why @MNHQ don't seem to be listening to posters about matters that clearly bother your users. Rather than fiddling about with the lesser points of thread navigation.

ProfYaffle · 18/02/2023 09:41

I don't use any of them. I can't see unanswered threads at all. I've been using MN since 2005 and have never used them. I just got into the habit of using active, I'm on and I'm watching and never changed!

(I use a laptop because I like a big screen and I touch type. Trying to use a tiny keyboard on a phone is frustrating)

BIWI · 18/02/2023 10:22

(I use a laptop because I like a big screen and I touch type. Trying to use a tiny keyboard on a phone is frustrating)

Me too! Even using an iPad I can't type quickly or accurately enough

UsingChangeofName · 18/02/2023 13:41

but do people really use a desktop? I would assume most people use an app?

Why ?
Why, just because you choose to do something one way, would you assume ^everyone then does it that way ? Confused

I use lap top over desk top, but use it because:
I like to have a reasonable sized screen to look at
I touch type
My phone doesn't have the capacity for the trillions of apps everyone is constantly trying to make us use
I have enough notifications coming into my phone without adding MN notifications to it

ProfYaffle · 18/02/2023 18:26

Glad to see I'm not the only dinosaur touch typer!

MagentaRocks · 18/02/2023 21:10

I don’t visit any of them really, I look at active

i would rather MNHQ focus on the things their users bring up as issues rather than asking about things like this. Zombie threads for example, a lot of people have asked about this and suggested ways to deal only to be ignored - well told you are looking into it, then nothing. There’s other things regularly brought up - same thing

Mayofearandloathing · 19/02/2023 07:24

I am one of those ancient subscribers who used to pitch in and contribute to “unanswered threads” back in the day when dinosaurs roamed Mumsnet.

I must admit I see it crop up very rarely on ‘Active threads’ nowadays and usually ignore it when it does. Mainly because the site is so much busier now and I assume that it will be responded to eventually.

I do answer threads which haven’t received replies and have been bumped in active though, particularly when op seems upset or very anxious, as it must be demoralising not to receive a reply in those circumstances.

I am also quite surprised, as a fairly prolific poster, to see ‘last day’ and ‘last hour’ as I didn’t realise they existed!

(I assume they mean that someone has posted on them in last day or last half hour.)

I mainly view Mumsnet from my phone or handheld tablets nowadays but I do miss the old “last 15 minutes” “last 30 minutes” categories as they were so useful to keep track of, or return to a thread, after you have been interrupted.

TheExistentialistCafé · 19/02/2023 18:50

Yes! @Mayofearandloathing I remember 15 min! and the line graph? Do you remember that one? Back in the dinosaur times when MNetters were happy to use the site and not whinging and asking to speak to the manager aka @MNHQ every time they were unhappy about the site, and highjacking discussions to "demand" an answer.

HeyManIJustWantSomeMuesli · 19/02/2023 18:54

our

  1. Threads made or commented on with the last day/hour. Threads with no replies but not sure how long I’d expect a thread to stand before it is classed as ‘unanswered’ maybe 12-24 hours…?
  2. Unanswered
  3. Very infrequently
  4. To see if it is something I can add anything to/interest as to what remains unanswered
  5. I wasn’t aware ‘last day’ and ‘last hour’ existed until now 😆
MudLady · 19/02/2023 21:36

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them?
All new threads started in the last 24 hours, last hour, & threads with no answers, but it's unclear how this last one is decided - do all threads start off in Unanswered? Does a certain length of time have to elapse first?

Which of these lists do you visit?
None.

If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
N/A

If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
N/A

If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?
I'm on a mobile device. I've managed to find the Unanswered list - which isn't particularly obvious - but the others don't appear to be available on mobile.

while we're on the subject, please, for the love of God, do something about the "similar threads" issue. Utterly fed up of people accidentally reanimating old threads. It's really not an improvement to the site, & half the time I wonder why the algorithm selects those particular threads, as they're not relevant. Sometimes they are relevant but there must be a hundred other threads that are much more recent.

ItsAllSoComplicated · 19/02/2023 21:42

Which of these lists do you visit?
Unanswered threads. Someone once posted with a link saying something along the lines of ‘if we all picked a different one, no one would be left unanswered when they need advice’.
If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them?
multiple times a day
If you do visit them, what do you use them for?
General interest? a common connection? To know I’m not alone?
If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why?
Last day or last hour don't interest me as I can see Trending so would go there over last day or hour.

YewandOak · 19/02/2023 21:49

Judgyjudgy · 17/02/2023 06:29

Sorry because I'm not answering your specific question ... but do people really use a desktop? I would assume most people use an app? Anyway that's my contribution 🙈

Yes,I prefer using my desktop to the app on my phone,I can have multiple threads open.

As to the lists,I've never taken any notice of them,I always go to ''active''

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/02/2023 11:07

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them
Last day new thread posted in last day
Last hour new thread posted in last hour
Unanswered OP hasn't had any replies

Which of these lists do you visit none

If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why I didn't know they existed. I only ever view active threads and I'm on

IncompleteSenten · 20/02/2023 11:12

Based on the names of the lists, what would you expect to see in each of them? Last hour - threads made in the last hour. Last day - threads started in the last day. Unanswered - threads with no replies.

Which of these lists do you visit? None

If you do visit them, how frequently do you visit them? N/A

If you do visit them, what do you use them for? N/A

If you don’t visit them, can you tell us why? Can't be arsed. I just look at active convos.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/02/2023 20:50

@AmeliaPMumsnet sort the grammar out. I’ve been asking for this for maybe 10 years. MNHQ IS not MNHQ are asking. God this makes me irrationally cross. Like “MNHQ have commented…” HAS. HAS. HAS.
