Page freezing/ Edge, only this site affected

GeneratedRandomly · 06/12/2022 12:23

This only happens on MN.
Using Edge on W10 laptop.
I am reading a thread, it is too long to finish so I leave the page open for when I return.
I return and the page just stays solidly in place, will not scroll. I have to refresh, then I get a page with options to wait or leave. I select leave because wait does nothing but wait and wait and wait. It then lets me refresh and allows me back to the page.
I changed a setting on Edge and it was OK, then there was an update and now it is doing it again.
I am getting tired of it now, as I said above it is only on this site.

Yes, getting this every day.
iphone Safari, Windows Edge. Worse on Windows than iphone.
Only on Mumsnet. Clearing cache has no effect.

notthe1Parrot · 11/12/2022 20:49

I should add that iphone freezes with white spaces between posts, but doesnt get the "This page has a problem" message.

Edge gets the freezing plus the messages mentioned above.

I have to come out of Mumsnet, go to any other website (which work perfectly), and then try Mumsnet again which then works for a few minutes, then back to the messages asking me do I want to wait...

Mumzoo5070 · 11/12/2022 20:52

Yes! I have this too. It is driving me mad.

HebeMumsnet · 12/12/2022 11:38

Hello everyone. We've got a few queries and workaround suggestions for individuals (see below) but in general terms, the issue for many of you will be the posts per page so if you can set that to 25 (or 50 if that works for you) that will solve the problem for many. If you've already done that, try clearing your cache, and finally, if you're not using Chrome, try switching to that as it seems to be the most effective browser for avoiding the issue of freezing threads.

If anyone has tried all that to no avail, if you could let us know what device you are using, how much RAM it has, and what browser you're on, we'll have another look and see if we can find something else to help.

@Fladdermus - looks like you're using the app, so the "Per Page" setting will have no effect unfortunately. What device are you using the app on? Is it Android?

@Mrstwiddle - Can you tell us what device are you using? And how much RAM it has? And what browser are you on? Setting your posts per page to 25 will also help in the meantime.

@GeneratedRandomly - How much RAM does your device have, and can you tell us what kind of device it is too? Can you also try using Chrome and see if that helps?

Mrstwiddle · 12/12/2022 21:53

@HebeMumsnet its an iPad, 5th generation.Using Safari, not sure about Ram. It is set to 25 posts per page. Restarting the iPad seems to have no effect.

I don’t have the same issue with other discussion forums like Reddit

GeneratedRandomly · 13/12/2022 02:40

Windows 10 laptop, RAM 8.00 GB (5.94 GB usable)

25 posts.

I don't use Chrome for MN due to previous problems with the site, I actually believe that the site should work on Edge if tech is up to scratch.

This has been ongoing for a long time now. There is another update just appeared today on Edge, I need to open it.

I changed from Chrome a while back because something else wasn't working.
When will this end I wonder...

Same. Changed to Samsung browser on phone and can't post on long threads at all.

AuntieStella · 13/12/2022 08:21

Didn't screenshot it, but I'm getting crashing with an error message that starts SBOX FATAL ERROR

Please get this fixed.

It wasn't a problem until recently, And I'd like a MN that is working.

It's not restricted to long threads, but if you think that's where the problem originates, how long is it going to take you to fix that?

tribpot · 13/12/2022 16:40

It was this error I think @AuntieStella Error code: SBOXFATALMEMORY_EXCEEDED

The way the site behaves feels like it's struggling with memory - sometimes typing messages can be quite laggy.

My feeling is that it's related to the huge number of ads, I'm going to try in Opera (which blocks all ads be default) to see if that helps.

Hi all

Can we check if anyone is using antivirus software?

LilyMumsnet · 13/12/2022 16:51

And please could you give this a go: www.chromestory.com/2020/06/sbox-fatal-memory-exceeded/

Fladdermus · 13/12/2022 17:00

@HebeMumsnet Yes I'm using a Nokia android phone.

HebeMumsnet · 14/12/2022 12:05

Hello @AuntieStella and @tribpot. It could be that it's antiviral software causing this. Have a look here: https://www.chromestory.com/2020/06/sbox-fatal-memory-exceeded/. Don't know if you're using Eset software but some of the suggestions here might help.

Thank you to everyone else who's got back to us with updates. We'll go through them now. Flowers

ajandjjmum · 14/12/2022 12:14

Thank God it's not just me. I was beginning to take it personally! Work pc, Edge, all threads are affected, and most irritating, after spending time composing an incredibly insightful/witty/thoughtful message, it won't post and the 'Wait/Exit page' option comes up.

We do have anti-virus software.

ajandjjmum · 14/12/2022 12:15

That worked straightaway! Grin

HebeMumsnet · 14/12/2022 12:17

@Mrstwiddle and @Fladdermus can you let us know if you're using the app or the website on your devices? Thank you! Flowers

HebeMumsnet · 14/12/2022 12:22

Thanks for all that info @GeneratedRandomly . We'll look at all that. Could we ask first what version of Edge (or any other browser you're using) you have? Sometimes the site does have trouble with the older versions so that's a possibility.

AuntieStella · 14/12/2022 13:16

New thread on similar/same issue

www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4692603-page-freezing-edge-only-this-site-affected?reply=122267350

It's been OK for me this morning (so far, touch wood) but looks as if the problem is actually worsening overall

ajandjjmum · 14/12/2022 19:17

So far - I've reduced my posts per page to 100 and it's working much better. Certainly when I post - wonder if it'll still throw be off threads though?

Mrstwiddle · 14/12/2022 19:35

@HebeMumsnet the website!

LilyMumsnet · 14/12/2022 22:02

If edge has updated, it might be worth clearing your cache again just to ensure that the browser isn't storying old error messages.

My Edge is the most up to date one, whatever that is. I have whatever comes with Windows 10 regarding AV.
Ditto Chrome although as I said before, I no longer use it for MN as it didn't work on there and I prefer to use Edge for MN for various reasons.

Redebs · 15/12/2022 09:16

When I first started on here a few months ago, it would freeze on the adverts and I gave up. A few weeks later, tried it again and it was fine.
I'm using Android, so it's unusual to have this kind of issue, compared to MS.
I think it's just Mumsnet being such an active site and them reporting every thing to the secret authorities😉

I have the same issue with MN freezing completely whilst other sites function fine.

I use 16" MBP running Ventura with 16Gb Ram. I use Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Vivaldi, all kept up to date version wise, I clear cache regularly on all four and still get this freezing issue on each of them. The severity varies but by day rather than by browser. This Mac has the corporate version of Defender as AV.

I also use an older 15" MBP running Big Sur with 16Gb RAM. Same four browsers, all kept up to date and caches cleared regularly. Avast as AV. Same profile of behaviour.

Problem persists on both even if I disable AV temporarily and clear caches.

LilyMumsnet · 15/12/2022 10:43

Thanks all, we'll continue investigating this and let you know when we have an update.
