Mobile site is all but broken

Hi MNHQ,

I know we've moaned about this before but the mobile site (Chrome, Samsung) is all but broken. Longer threads take forever to load, forever to refresh. New posts to longer threads can take up to 10 minutes to load. Navigating to 'Threads I'm On' from a longer thread takes over 31 seconds (I timed it).
The bottom bar randomly floats half way up the thread. Even refreshing the screen takes forever.

This new site is infinitely worse than the old site. I'm very happy to email you videos of my user experience if you'd like to see just how awful it is.

Hi @Lougle

Please could you let us know how many posts you're viewing per page? If you switch to fewer, it is very likely to load the slow loading.

Also, could you try clearing your cache? This should solve any lingering issues once you've changed posts per page. Flowers

Lougle · 19/10/2022 17:44

@LilyMumsnet I'm really reluctant to do that, tbh. I'm one of the old posters that was allowed to keep 1000 per page. The old site didn't have such an issue with it. The new site is supposedly 'better' but it's so much worse.

Hello

We understand that it's frustrating but it really will solve the issue whilst we're looking into it. Can you just give it a go for now? Flowers

EerilyDevilled · 19/10/2022 19:10

You can switch back and forth between 1000 and eg 50 posts per page (I keep having to do this in my settings as annoyingly the ability to see all posts in a thread when you only normally have 50 has gone).

Eupraxia · 19/10/2022 19:11

I use the mobile site on Samsung Internet. I have not seen any of the issues you describe OP. I have 100 posts per page, if that's relevant.

It will be relevant. Back in the day, Mumsnet used to let you choose 1000 posts per page. Then they decided that they would make it a maximum of 500 posts per page. But lots of MNers complained, so they decided that those of us who were established posters could keep the 1000 posts per page limit but all new posters would be limited. All was well. Now, they've changed the platform and although we can have 1000 posts per page, it's rendering the site almost unusable. We were told this new platform would be better and it's so much worse. Including many issues that I've raised which simply can't be fixed, such as being unable to remove a tag once it's in place unless you select the whole tag and cut it from the text box.

I’ve been complaining since launch.
pages continuously crash,

there are blank spaces on the page,
if you try to go down a long thread the page goes white/crashes/won’t load all posts,

pages freeze,

takes ages to load,

the videos on the screen auto play
so if you’re listening to music with headphones these videos cause the music to stop playing!

the consent repeatedly comes up every other day

Look, I was the same but I caved. It's still not perfect. The blue bar in the middle of the page can be well irritating but you'll have to let go of the 1000 post thing. It doesn't work anymore.

Lougle · 20/10/2022 13:52

Maybe you're right. I just can't understand why MNHQ would pay money to make the site worse.

Completely agree with you.
im an old poster and it is unusable.

Lougle · 22/10/2022 15:01

I wouldn't mind so much if I could choose to have 500 or even 200 posts per page, but it's 50, 100 or all.

If I have a lot of posts on a page then the site gives up

Namechangenumber23 · 25/10/2022 23:48

Help needed I guess. All I'm seeing now is this! I've cleared cookies/cache and all the usual stuff etc.. and nothing is working. I've never experienced this before with any site and definitely never here.
It just randomly changed earlier today when I clicked on a link for a post to read and never went back.

I'm having the same issue since yesterday. Android (pixel) mobile site. Not even trying to view loads of posts per page. Any ideas?

I had this yesterday, thought MN was down, but it was ok on my kindle fire. Cleared my browsing history on my phone and that sorted it out.
Otherwise I have no problems at all with the site.

Msgrieves · 26/10/2022 06:36

I have all the same problems as you op, also sometimes clicking a thread causes the third one below it to open, it's not a misclick, sometimes the thread that opens isn't even on the screen, happens on phone and tablet.

Thanks. That did work. Weird though.

LizziesTwin · 26/10/2022 09:07

I’m going to try that - had a very productive day yesterday with no MN.

Moneypenny007 · 27/10/2022 11:38

I'm having the same issue with the page, can't see the usual layout. Reading threads is beyond painful as u don't know what is a post or not.

Halsall · 27/10/2022 18:03

I don't use the app, I don't like it. I just log into the site from my iPhone in the normal way. For the last few days it's suddenly gone completely haywire and all formatting has disappeared. I just see massive icons and tiny rows of text squeezed in between.

Can you shed any light on what's going on @MNHQ?

Screenshot attached of what I now see when I open a page. I've logged out and it's still exactly the same.

It's working fine on my desktop PC and on my iPad.

I'm running Safari and IOS 15.6.1

Halsall · 27/10/2022 18:07

Just realised other people are experiencing this too. Like @Namechangenumber23, it just suddenly flipped into that format for no apparent reason.

PicturesOfDogs · 27/10/2022 18:09

I had the weird white layout problem on Tuesday, and all of yesterday, but cleared it built doing this last night:

To clear your cookies and keep your history, go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, then tap Remove All Website Data.

This is on iPhone, not sure about Samsung.
Cleared the cache, but doesn’t delete the history

PicturesOfDogs · 27/10/2022 18:10

Posted too soon, but all fine since I did that, and layout back to normal

PicturesOfDogs · 27/10/2022 18:11

If you don’t mind your history going too, you can clear it all by:

To clear your history and cookies, go to Settings > Safari, and tap Clear History and Website Data. Clearing your history, cookies and browsing data from Safari won't change your AutoFill information.

Halsall · 28/10/2022 10:48

Thank you @PicturesOfDogs - that did the trick. I didn’t have to clear the history, just the website data solved it.
