How do we feel about the c-word?

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2008 11:49

Generally, as you know, we take a fairly relaxed view about swearing on MN but we do in our Talk Policy promise to remove postings that are obscene.

We've had a complaint about the c-word as posted here and are rather torn as to whether to leave it or not - it's not a personal attack so were it your average term of abuse, we'd usually let it stand. But some people hate the c-word and view it as much worse than traditional forms of abuse - beyond the pale as it were, others argue that it should be reclaimed...we're somewhere on the fence and it's not comfortable

Would be good to garner your thoughts, so we can jump off one way or t'other?

well what the hell, on checking I have apparently never had a cunt related nickname before

I have been called AitchYouTwat and JustineMarmoset amongst other things, I wish i could remember why

Blandmum · 18/01/2008 18:13

There one was a vulva named Hah
Said cod'I wonder who you are'
'I think you are Greeny'
'I feel like a meany'
'I think I'll report you from afar'

CuntyandZooey · 18/01/2008 18:14

I don't care about buying and selling, and the spelling and punctuation thing really

I felt quite odd not caring about them either

Prunters · 18/01/2008 18:16

IF we keep talking about cunts a lot it will start coming up in google searches lol.. can you imagine a bloke searching on the word 'cunt' and getting a link to abusive MNers LMCAO

MascaraOHara · 18/01/2008 18:17

Ah pst awya mamacunt.. it's nopt often I post a nicew thread.. or anything nice for that matter lol

foxinsocks · 18/01/2008 18:17

it's too similar to munters though prune

MascaraOHara · 18/01/2008 18:18

oh PS. mamavoncunt... on the DS Lite there is a game called 'Cooking Mama' - maybe you should be 'Cunting Mama' sorry your new naME just made me think of it

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2008 18:20

Ok well there we go - opinions seem as unanimous as they are ever likely to be so we can happily leap off the fence clutching our new policy, which is actually the same as the old one, but now reinforced with a great, big mandate.

Cunt is allowed so long as it's used in a personal attack.

On the thread titles issue - we'll play it by ear I guess. We didn't delete cunting sainsburys iirr because it was funny (but I might be wrong).

Thanks for all the input and advice.

M Towers xx

Well, thank fuck for that, our cunts are in safe hands.

Snurk

MascaraOHara · 18/01/2008 18:21

oh,oh Justine - can we use it to personally attack non-MNMembers?

contentiouscat · 18/01/2008 18:21

I really dont like it and would assume anyone using it was not terribly intelligent but unless they were using it to attack someone personally then I cant see why you would need to remove it - I should imagine you have enough to do already

ELR · 18/01/2008 18:22

hope the offended person hasnt been to see or read vagina monolouges
dont think you should ban its freedom of speach and all that

harpsichordcarrier · 18/01/2008 18:22

"We didn't delete cunting sainsburys iirr because it was funny"
you see, that is what makes mumsnet so great

ELR · 18/01/2008 18:23

MascaraOHara · 18/01/2008 18:24

Oh yes, HC - where is the mN anthem?

Can't we get some to record it and stick it on here as a wav file.. I'd have it as my ringtone lol

sparklesandwine · 18/01/2008 18:24

well the bus driver was being a cunt so perfect word to use there imo

can't say i use the 'c-word' but each to their own, i say 'fuck' an awful lot more than i should which may offend but what the fuck to do i care

no words should be banned on here tis why i like MN, but if any word is being used in an abusive/derogatory way then just delete the post

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2008 18:25

oops I think I left out a not...

I meant "not used in a personal attack". Ah me, it's been a long week.
