How do we feel about the c-word?

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2008 11:49

Generally, as you know, we take a fairly relaxed view about swearing on MN but we do in our Talk Policy promise to remove postings that are obscene.

We've had a complaint about the c-word as posted here and are rather torn as to whether to leave it or not - it's not a personal attack so were it your average term of abuse, we'd usually let it stand. But some people hate the c-word and view it as much worse than traditional forms of abuse - beyond the pale as it were, others argue that it should be reclaimed...we're somewhere on the fence and it's not comfortable

Would be good to garner your thoughts, so we can jump off one way or t'other?

Berkshire Hunts.

LazyLinePainterJane · 18/01/2008 17:31

I don't see why it is "the worst" swear word. No worse than calling someone a knob, dick, or any other such like.

It's just a word. And as for all this "you don't have one, you can't say it" or "women should know better than to say it"....parp!

After all, where would we be without twunt?

handlemecarefully · 18/01/2008 17:31

Cunt is no worse than prick or dick - unless of course we think female genitalia is particularly obscene and beyond the pail???

DaDaDa · 18/01/2008 17:33

I don't much like it used by men. Especially Londoners; 'you caaaaaant'. I try not to use it.

There are far better, more meaningful terms of abuse.

Cock Knocker is my favourite.

But I guess it's up to you lot what you do with your c...

policywonk · 18/01/2008 17:35

fox - it was going to be 'Jesus/desert scenario'. But I was too scared of Marina (among others) to post it.

DaDaDa · 18/01/2008 17:36

But I'm also a hypocrite as I think twat is a lovely swear word. Just sounds less brutal I suppose?

lol policy. We are non believers here but I do try and reign my bejesuses/gods in because I do know it offends people on here (and I happen to respect marina et al).

I think twat and twattish are far milder terms than the sort of behaviour that warrants a cunt or cuntish description.

pointydog · 18/01/2008 17:41

Doesn't bother me. Can be used humorously. Seems to show extreme sensitivity to object to the word itself regardless of any sort of context.

policywonk · 18/01/2008 17:42

Did I say scared of? I meant respectful of

And yes, Pruners, that had occurred to me too. Very sly.

foxinsocks · 18/01/2008 17:42

oooooooh pointy, I started a Black Swan Green thread for you today.

Vacua · 18/01/2008 17:45

it's one of my best words, and it wouldn't be very effective if it didn't offend would it?

pleeeeease don't ban it

pointydog · 18/01/2008 17:45

There's an art gallery in edinburgh called Total Kunst. I know it's German but I'm sure there's a very funny double entendre meant there.

pointydog · 18/01/2008 17:47

oo foxers, I will look.

I have been a sorry, ill old hound today. Not myself. I might ramble

do ramble. Sorry to hear that. I actually couldn't remember who had asked me about it (thought it might have been boco) but seeing your name has just triggered the memory.

policywonk · 18/01/2008 17:50

Ah, pointy, did you see how fox differentiated between us there? Effortless.

foxinsocks · 18/01/2008 17:52

and pruners was around at the same time too.
