How do we feel about the c-word?

JustineMumsnet · 18/01/2008 11:49

Generally, as you know, we take a fairly relaxed view about swearing on MN but we do in our Talk Policy promise to remove postings that are obscene.

We've had a complaint about the c-word as posted here and are rather torn as to whether to leave it or not - it's not a personal attack so were it your average term of abuse, we'd usually let it stand. But some people hate the c-word and view it as much worse than traditional forms of abuse - beyond the pale as it were, others argue that it should be reclaimed...we're somewhere on the fence and it's not comfortable

Would be good to garner your thoughts, so we can jump off one way or t'other?

What in the name of Mike are you trying to do, OBM?

onebatmother · 18/01/2008 19:18

Design new Cunt emoticon Pol!

I did it using punctuation but then it automatically converted it into a bloomin smiley.

I wanted a face with a bushy beard or a brazilian, but I've failed.

IorekByrnison · 18/01/2008 19:32

Don't ban it!

(Unless onebat really can come up with a special sweary emoticon that we can all use instead).

Pesha · 18/01/2008 19:35

Like this OBM? Without the line obviously but doing it as a link was the only way I could think of to make it work!

Pesha · 18/01/2008 19:37

Thats not really worked either has it?

onebatmother · 18/01/2008 19:40

Iorek the emoticon was just for the faint of heart. I have no need of it, of cours. Pure altruism on my part.

Pesha, it's closer than mine!

Can I offer any of you ladies the phone number of a good gynaecologist?

Monkeytrousers · 18/01/2008 20:09

Refer the offended gentlewoman to the vagina monologues

have to admit i don't like it.

think it's because i had an older mum who would have fainted if i'd said it. don't think anyone in my family have every said it either (three elder sisters).

i say it in the car alot.

Monkeytrousers · 18/01/2008 20:17

if it is said with a Waynetta Slob cockney accent that is well out of order though!

i love that swear word - don't think i'd use it on mumsnet though

onebatmother · 18/01/2008 20:36

fwiw (which, at this late stage, is truly bugger all)

don't partic like the word used as an aggressive insult (though I use it like this myself) only because it's commonly perceived to be the worst insult. The implication is (as many have said) that the very, very worst thing in the world is vulval/vaginal/female.

Simultaneously loathe the idea that it should never be used, for the same reasons.

Snort, with long snot trails, at the person who said it was the worst insult 'especially from a woman'.

Hire helicopter and lower Large Sign for Harpsi. (Sign says 'Let's reclaim the word cunt as a not-particularly-aggressive, often-jokey insult. Like prick, arse, tit")

Look forward to the day we hear "my precious, you really are a cunt, but I do love you"

unknownrebelbang · 18/01/2008 20:38

Really dislike the word.

Wouldn't want to see it banned for reasons mentioned already, except I really dislike it (and other swearing) in thread titles.

onebatmother · 18/01/2008 20:38

and draw your attention to the Nietzsche thread, where the merits of a Nietzschean Kant are discussed in some detail.

Wisteria · 18/01/2008 20:39

Not read the thread (just the link) but FWIW it doesn't bother me as long as not used against someone directly on the boards.

In fact I think sometimes 'tis fairly amusing

Blandmum · 18/01/2008 20:40

( )

Emoticon for post partum cunt

Blandmum · 18/01/2008 20:41

Bugger that didn't work!

fortyplus · 18/01/2008 20:41

I really hate it but I hate censorship more. We're talking the written word here, not someone swearing in the street. I'm an old fogey but I say leave it.
