Ads taking over the whole screen

I thought I saw something about this maybe yesterday, but I can’t find a thread about it on site stuff to post on.

today I’ve started having an issue with huge ads that take over all or half of the screen (mobile, iPhone 13 with the new software update). Example screenshots attached.

Hi @FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander we're sorry about this. Is it happening on every page or just when you first visited the site?

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 11/06/2022 17:32

It’s happening sporadically in bursts. I’ll get a flurry of threads it happens on, then it calms down. Then it happens again.

The Greene King ad makes it impossible to read a thread at all. It came up (again) on this thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/going_back_to_work/4519280-WFH-jobs-for-a-few-hours-a-week-suggestions

And this thread has been rendered unusable (I had to type without seeing the biz) by this.

Hello fresh messing up this thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/4567182-i-just-bought-an-ms-t-shirt-in-sainsbury

they don’t come up immediately. But after a few seconds of reading the entire screen is taken over and the ad will not go away.

It’s still happening. The ads just take over the screen and the site becomes entirely unusable. So I’ve installed an ad blocker and solved my problem.

Hi OP

We're really sorry about that - we're investigating now and will put a stop in place to ensure this doesn't happen to anyone else going forward.

TimeStandStill · 13/06/2022 22:42

Thanks for suggesting a stop. Why has this not already been done? these massive site blocking ads are hardly a new thing. They have been appearing sporadically for ages. I have not come across this on any other sites.

Rightchoiceat46 · 07/07/2022 17:52

It is still happening, I use a MacBook Air and the screen is blocked by the ads and has been going on for weeks. I do a page refresh and it clears but then reverts to the ad blocking the page.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 08/07/2022 16:33

Hello @Rightchoiceat46 An ad shouldn't be obscuring your view of threads and so we'll look into this. If it's okay with you, we'll need some more details to replicate the issue:

What device are you using?
What version of the operating system are you using?
What browser are you using, and is it the most up to date version for your device?
What is the URL of the page this is happening on?

Thank you. 🙏

longwayoff · 10/07/2022 09:32

Still happening. Wacking great ad makes whole site seize up. Using a Samsung tablet. Writing this on mobile app. Which seems to be working as usual so just the tablet.

HebeMumsnet · 11/07/2022 10:47

Hi there longwayoff,

Thanks for those details. If you happened to get a screenshot and could tell us the url of the page where you were having the massive ad issue, that would be brilliant. Even just the url and if you could tell us which ad it was, that would be a big help.

Thank you!

longwayoff · 11/07/2022 12:59

URL? What's that? Sorry no idea what it is. Every page though.

JoMumsnet · 11/07/2022 16:20

Hi again @longwayoff - a URL is the address/location of a specific page on a website - it shows in the bar at the top of the screen. So, the URL of this page is - www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4567217-ads-taking-over-the-whole-screen.

But as you say it's happening on every page, just a few details about the ad itself would help enormously, as well as letting us know what browser you're using, and if it's the most up to date version.

Thanks in advance.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2022 09:33

Thanks Jo. As you mentioned browser I have tried opening MN using Chrome instead of standard Google and that seems to have fixed it.

JoMumsnet · 12/07/2022 10:56

Glad to hear it, newnamethanks. But if you do have this issue again, please let us know (and if you can grab a screenshot at any stage, that'd be ace).
