any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:

Because the forum offers an active post thread which people use. It makes the forum easy to use. I suspect most won't actively search for a specific board unless you have a question. If you want to read varied threads then active threads is the best way to do that.

How would you know if you were interested in a thread unless you've read it ? What would you search for? Given people will call threads different things?

I too have come across threads I don't want to read as they hit too close to home but I don't think that's on Mumsnet to stop me seeing them.

I have been an active user of this forum for a number of years and didn't realise there was a sex topic. Ironically I only discovered it due to someone posting about how upset they were that a sec topic wasn't in the sex board.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 13:15

Then you have to accept you may open threads you don't want to read. That's just common sense. If you don't want to read it close it and move on.

Why?

Why should somebody coming to MN to get advice on post natal depression or still birth have to scroll past those threads?

Again, things might calm down in a week.

tigger1001 · 27/02/2022 13:16

"Exactly.

Why should they have to scroll past ‘AIBU to not care about Ukraine?’.

Again, this is not Reddit"

But that will always happen, specific board or not. There is a news board I believe yet the posts are not in there currently.

Why don't you want to scroll past things that you don't want to read?

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 13:17

A Ukraine topic would not stop those threads appearing in active convos. It would just allow people to choose to hide the topic.

As hard as these things are this forum isn't specifically for these things. There will always be posts on other things that might affect an individual.

If it was a forum only to discuss depression or miscarriage etc then you would have a point but it isn't.

That's a rabbit hole we shouldn't go down. What about posters who as a result of miscarriage don't want to read about others as it's too raw for them?

I do get that. But it's to wide a topic in my opinion to all be lumped together and I think it would lead to posts which may be of interest being missed.

The one about charities to donate to etc.

People may hide the topic so not to see war threads but miss discussions on how energy prices will be affected for example.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 13:24

tigger1001, I think you are unaware that you can hide a topic from active convos.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 13:25

I think they are more likely to miss a post about energy prices if it’s on page 5 of AIBU or chat.

C8H10N4O2 · 27/02/2022 13:55

You may as well ask, why don't adults have the ability to search for topics they're interested in?

That assumes you know they are there. I look in some individual topics but I also scan through active to see what is being discussed.

I'd argue that it makes more sense for those who know they want to avoid a topic to search for the specific issues they wish to read. You can never complete avoid a topic if you read any of the big boards or active. Covid, Brexit and similar big topic threads still routinely appear in AIBU, Chat and various other topics until and if they are moved.

No. I am aware.

FinallyFree2022 · 27/02/2022 14:22

Please create a topic ASAP @mnhq

Not really. As it would appear on active chat. But if it's in a topic you have blocked you wouldn't see it at all.
merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:24

No. I am aware.

Then I don’t understand the problem.

Threads on Ukraine continue to appear in active convos unless somebody has decided to customise what they can see.

It’s easier to find a thread in a particular topic because threads in AIBU and chat quickly move off the first page unless people are currently posting.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:30

As hard as these things are this forum isn't specifically for these things.

Obviously this is something for the site to decide, but I would argue that helping people who are struggling is more important to MN than promoting click baity and ill informed AIBU threads.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:33

But if it's in a topic you have blocked you wouldn't see it at all.

So people can choose to unblock?

A thread that hasn’t been posted on for a couple of days won’t appear in active conversations.

Because people will post where they want to, irrespective of whether there is a "correct" topic. Then posts get derailed with posters coming on to say " oh yet another post" or "why can't you post in the correct topic". Saw it countless times with covid. Wasn't exactly successful having a covid board as although it was used people will invariably post where they think it's higher traffic. Also newer users to the boards maybe don't realise that there are "rules"

I think Ukraine is too wide a topic to have its own as there are several different subjects which could easily start to talk about the conflict.

I never use the actual boards - find them far too clumsy. I just use active topics so I can see a wide range of topics. That suits me best.

The easiest thing has always been - scroll past if a thread isn't of interest.

tigger1001 · 27/02/2022 14:38

This!

You have said it better than I did.

Covid was a perfect example. At the start of the pandemic I did hide the covid board. But still saw threads about it daily because people post elsewhere.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:42

And that wouldn’t change.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:43

You can never complete avoid a topic if you read any of the big boards or active.

But you can avoid the more batshit/borderline offensive threads if they are moved.

merrymouse · 27/02/2022 14:44

And there is no need to post in a thread to get it moved. It just needs to be reported.

ClaudineClare · 27/02/2022 15:14

Some posters are now scaring each other shitless about the possibility of nuclear war. MNHQ needs to step in and calm the wilder talk, it is not fair to scare people so much.

TeenPlusCat · 27/02/2022 15:29

I posted up thread that I am in favour of a separate board and why.

I would like to address the 'but some people only ever look in AIBU/Chat or only ever access via Active' argument for not having a board.

Are people honestly saying, that because some people choose not to use all the boards/features that MN has then those features shouldn't be used to the detriment of people who do use them?

It strikes me as similar to people who have phones with flexible Do Not Disturb features who complain about being texted at midnight.

If you choose not to use provided features you can't complain when others do! I choose not to use facebook. I accept I miss out on some stuff because of it. That's life.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2022 15:35

There’s now a thread in AIBU just titled ‘War Prep’ Hmm

So true Just opened a thread and the level of crazy is beyond belief. Add in the fact that every one thinks their question is so important they can't post on an existing thread

It's madness. I'm sure these people are getting off on how many others they can terrify. People with anxiety issues must be struggling, especially if they use this site for support.
