Site problems following DDOS attack - more information here

Hi all, just to update you on the current situation. As Justine posted here, we’ve been suffering a DDOS attack since approx 11.30am today and as a result, the site has been slow and went down briefly. The app is also out of action for now while the firewall is up.

Our firewalls are keeping the site secure but this does mean you’re getting a ‘checking your browser’ message every thirty minutes (you don’t have to do anything here apart from wait to get back on) and some of you may be asked to complete a captcha test to make sure you’re a human.

We’re sorry for the extra hassle right now, we’re working hard to resolve the situation and things should be back to normal soon. Thanks very much for your patience.

Doublechins · 20/02/2021 18:30

Oh lord I thought it genuinely was my crap internet connection. My house is the cleanest it's been in a while because of it 🙈

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 18:33

Thanks Becky. I wondered why I kept getting a 'checking your browser' message! I thought 'oooh 'ello, are they watching me?' Grin

derxa · 20/02/2021 18:37

Testing

BIWI · 20/02/2021 18:38

@itsgettingwierd

Thank you Mumsnet HQ.

It reassuring to know your firewalls work against such attacks.

I'll never forget the 2016(?) one. I was travelling to the airport to get on a plane and changing my passwords to everything I had in the taxi at 3am🙈😫

I had to be writing them down on paper (so secure!) to shove in my suitcase so I'd remember them in my return!

What is this 'airport' and 'get on a plane' that you speak of? Confused
JaneJeffer · 20/02/2021 18:39
I recommend watching this to pass the time in between attacks.
Weirdfan · 20/02/2021 18:46

Mine too Grin

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 20/02/2021 18:47

Mumsnet is not very secure Sad.

CassandraCross · 20/02/2021 18:48

I gave up this afternoon as the site became unusable. I did wonder if someone with nefarious intent was causing the issues as they have done previously, how pathetic they are.

I did get my freezer defrosted though so not all is lost.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/02/2021 18:49

A DDOS is nothing to do with how secure a site is...

DGRossetti · 20/02/2021 18:55

You may want to check your logs back a bit further, as the site was throwing up various errors yesterday and Thursday that looked like a DDoS. Checking my logs Smile I can see I ran:

downforeveryoneorjustme.com/mumsnet.com

at 15:39 yesterday and it returned "Down for all" ....

Jux · 20/02/2021 18:57

Thanks for keeping us in the picture - I somehow missed this thread when I went to check Site Stuff before posting my own thread. I am often very dumb Grin

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2021 18:58

Who did ya piss off this time MN?

They were throwing the kitchen sink at that one. Not cheap.

There's a thread in site stuff since yesterday.
NotTerfNorCis · 20/02/2021 19:05

Not cheap

Implies a botnet. Hackers taking over other people's computers. Criminal activity.

yourhairiswinterfire · 20/02/2021 19:05

@Significantown

I hate when the tests ask me something that I would understand if I was from the US. Being a Brit, I have no idea, so I press random boxes.
Urgh, I hate those ones.

'Click all the boxes with a fire hydrant'. Well I would if I could see the things, but the pictures you're showing me look like they were taken with a bloody potato, 50ft away from said fire hydrants! I could be looking at a dog for all I know, the pics are so grainy.

I much prefer the 'tick this box if you're not a robot' test. Nice and easy Grin Though denying they're a robot seems like exactly the sort of thing a deceptive robot would do Wink

It's gamers I think Red

Red, guessing it was linked to the 50:50 thread in FWR ( now swiss cheese, sadly) We "uppitty women" must have upset some MRAs, by talking about women's rights!

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/02/2021 19:14

Yes, that one plus another (no longer extant) from overnight.

itsgettingwierd · 20/02/2021 19:18

BIWI I know right?!

perpetualnamechanger · 20/02/2021 19:24

I thought this was happening earlier when they page wouldn't connect.

Thanks for providing a platform for women to speak up for our rights.

Sorry this is happening but not surprised in the slightest.

zzizzer · 20/02/2021 19:25

It's a form of cyber terrorism

MRAs are just creepy bullies.

MiddleClassMother · 20/02/2021 19:31

Thank you! I thought it was my internet connection when I couldn't get on earlier, the app appears to be working now as well :)
