Site problems following DDOS attack - more information here

Hi all, just to update you on the current situation. As Justine posted here, we’ve been suffering a DDOS attack since approx 11.30am today and as a result, the site has been slow and went down briefly. The app is also out of action for now while the firewall is up.

Our firewalls are keeping the site secure but this does mean you’re getting a ‘checking your browser’ message every thirty minutes (you don’t have to do anything here apart from wait to get back on) and some of you may be asked to complete a captcha test to make sure you’re a human.

We’re sorry for the extra hassle right now, we’re working hard to resolve the situation and things should be back to normal soon. Thanks very much for your patience.

I did check with ds2 errol

He definitely wasnt him

Having said that you can tell when he’s lying...his lips are moving 🤔

RagzReturnsRebooted · 20/02/2021 22:46

Ahh, I did wonder when I was getting tje wierd message and slow connection earlier, but I googled it, checked twitter, checked one of those websites that tells you if sites were down and all seemed OK. Maybe I was too quick off the mark!
Now I've seen this so it makes sense, but I really want to know who did it and why now (though as PPs, I have suspicions).
Thanks MN for fighting off the baddies and keeping me from actual useful shit.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/02/2021 23:33

@ErrolTheDragon

It's probably a teenager who figured out that as mum had too much to do juggling wfh and homeschooling, she really needed MN taking down at the weekend so she had time to clean the house and defrost the fridge. So if one of yours has been suspiciously quietly tapping away on a computer and now looks smug....
DH is in IT... Hmm

I'm still not doing the laundry git face!

stumbledin · 20/02/2021 23:54

ErrolTheDragon - you may not have a static IP address but you probably link to the internet from the same wifi connections which will have addresses even if they appear masked. And anyone logging in from home useing their own wifi connection will have one.

Needmoresleep · 20/02/2021 23:58

It’s too easy to blame Trump, the North Koreans, or the Russians.

I think we need a tailor made conspiracy theory that could bring together Macron, Blair and Dilyn the dog, Facebook and a Chinese lab. I would add the Duke of Sussex but MN would probably prefer not.

Thanks MN for getting it back up, and allowing women their voice.

SomethingOnce · 21/02/2021 02:00

My money's on North Korean Nethuns Shock

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 04:18

Any news on who it was?

Sorry you're putting up with this yet again @mnhq

NiceGerbil · 21/02/2021 04:20

Well whoever it was I'd put money on it being blokes.

MoleSmokes · 21/02/2021 05:09

Just a coincidence that there was another coordinated attack around the same time, with mass reporting of a new site where staff & students in “academia” (mainly women in the UK) are logging anonymous accounts of harassment and persecution (mainly by men) due to Gender Critical views?

“GC Academia Network”
www.gcacademianetwork.org/

The reports (that the site was hosting pornographic content) were made to services that blacklist websites, services that are used by ISPs to block access to those sites.

This was being discussed on Mumsnet FWR, including comments from one of the people who helped to set up the GC Academia Network, while MN was being hit by the DDOS attack.

Maybe just a coincidence but it really wouldn’t surprise me if the two events were related.

ohyesiknowwhatyoumean · 21/02/2021 07:05

Coincidentally 🤨 a fruity agricultural site also seems to have been under attack. Asking the usual "what do these three sites have in common?" Question gives us the likely culprits.

MoltenLasagne · 21/02/2021 08:36

No matter their supposed justifications, my money is on this being done by sad little men who don't like women talking.

RedToothBrush · 21/02/2021 09:43

DH didn't think it was the type of attack done by bedroom amateurs. It was concerted and would have required a certain level of resourcing. (It other words its not chancers having a laugh. Its organised and very deliberate). When i told him Justine's comments that about it being very common he raised eyebrows. He said yes attacks happened frequently but that comment made it sound rather more usual than in reality too. Then he said there was normally a reason behind such attacks and they were generally targetted rather than random or opportunitistic. In other words MN has pissed off someone.

He didn't really blink about it other than that and said MN were doing everything right and seemed to have things in hand.

I'm sure it will spawn conspiracy theories as to who is behind it. It does prove that someone feels threatened by a bunch of vipers talking about recipes and shoes. Which in someways i find a good thing to hear.

Downriver · 21/02/2021 10:37

Trans activists, it must be. There is a constant campaign to get advertisers to pull out of MN because it is apparently a hot bed of transphobia and 'gender critical' thinking. In past few days I noticed quite a ramping up of Twitter attacks on it, claims that someone with username Transparent was banned from registering because of the name, which I find hard to believe.

Justhadathought · 21/02/2021 10:40

The thread that really seemed to have caused consternation was the one dealt with the issue of TW taking up roles on women's committees, and the proclivities of a few on the 'extremes' of the Lib -Dems.

Tech bros trying to control the flow of information is hot news at present.

More likely they were a PBP, if it happened at all
Lynora · 21/02/2021 15:20

It was probably just some bored teenagers who did it because they know how to.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2021 16:15

That name won't be unused! Do they know how many users there are on here? Or a PBP.

Honestly the nonsense some people spout and are believed... what happened to critical thinking?

DGRossetti · 21/02/2021 16:17

I don't think it's woke enough. Knowledge is considered oppression by some.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2021 16:20

Indeed, DGD. It's all about the feelz.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2021 16:21

Being gullible as a badge of honour.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2021 16:21

DGR!

Crescia · 21/02/2021 20:02

Twas men. Which flavour is debatable. Have women ever been caught in a DDoS attack? Ever?
