How to view your Mumsnet notifications

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

So just how broken does it need to be before you admit it was a poor idea, badly implemented?

It's mind-boggling to me? No one asked for it to be implemented and it now seems to be taking a lot of time and effort to fix it. Surely there is about a million other things MNHQ staff could be spending their time on??

S00LA · 12/11/2020 15:10

I can’t get the “ mark all as read “ button to work on an iPad.

Indeed.

If adding in the option for allowing people to turn it off is going to take a while then why not just roll back the implementation, turn it off and then if you're sure enough people want it turn it back on once you've got the opt-out working.

@JanineMumsnet Does the tech team not try these things out in a smaller trial first?!

None of this seems to what anyone wants (at least not on this thread) and it's not working, and doesn't have the functionality that would help people accept/use it either!

LittleMissNaice · 12/11/2020 16:19

I'm also finding that it doesn't work with bookmarks, it's landing me on either the first page of a thread or the top of the page my bookmark is on.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/11/2020 17:35

I still have nothing -

no notifications

no red dot

No messages

We all want what you've got!

I'd rather just turn it off .

BoomBoomsCousin · 13/11/2020 01:20

Yet another vote against this poorly thought out “feature”. As well as the poorly executed code you’ve put in, taking lots of different types of notification and squashing them together without giving people control over what shows makes the flag worse than useless (because it’s distracting without providing useful information) for anyone who is not interested in knowing every single thing you have decided might possibly be of interest.

There have been a lot of these sorts of mistakes over the last 18 months - rolling out “features” that are poorly executed and then making everyone wade through a ridiculous bug fixing quagmire instead of rolling it back and rethinking/testing it. What’s the thinking behind this approach?

DigitalChristmas · 13/11/2020 01:53

Please make it stop! The mark as read does not work properly for me.

JanineMumsnet · 13/11/2020 12:08

Just an update - those users who said they had an issue whereby they couldn't click the Mumsnet account menu, we have now released a fix for this, so this should now be working.

@JanineMumsnet - you do realise that it's very frustrating that you keep coming on here to address the odd fix, but have ignored the many, many comments on here from people saying they just don't like the notifications at all. It sounds as if you are refusing to listen! Angry

Please get rid of it and bring back the bell icon for PM notifications - I know @FlouncerInDenial is with me on this...

SoupDragon · 13/11/2020 13:13

It sounds as if you are refusing to listen!

Apart from when Justine said they are going to add a "turn off" option but it might take a week...

I'm not sure that's fair - MNHQ have said they're working on giving people the ability to turn it off - so hardly "refusing to listen".

DadDadDad · 13/11/2020 13:42

Oh, I missed that. @JanineMumsnet - sorry, I'll stand down. Blush

rslsys · 13/11/2020 13:56

You have got to understand that the Tech Team have to get home from school and do their homework before they can start looking at these problems. Then it’s evening meal and a bit more coding before bed.
Fortunately the weekend is coming up so they might be able to devote a few more hours to it 🤣🤣🤣

So why don't they just turn it off completely until they've sorted out all the bugs?

Patronising, rude, unfair.

Very unfair, and quite ignorant.
