How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

@LangClegsInSpace

I've just had a notification that a poster has mentioned me on a thread I'm on but the poster who is supposed to have mentioned me is not on the thread at all. Another poster has mentioned me on the thread in about the right timescale so I suspect this feature has just outed someone's namechange to me.

You should fix that.

This is quite worrying.
Blondeshavemorefun · 11/11/2020 17:02

@BIWI

Hmm. I'm not getting any notifications at all now!
Me neither

Now miss them. Joking lol

JanineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 17:27

@LangClegsInSpace Thank you for flagging to us, our technical team are taking a look. We have removed usernames from @mentions while we investigate.

I still get them for everything I'm watching, which is really irritating, as the only reason I'm watching is that I have them on my watch list.

It makes me not want to watch any of them, let along post on them, because I hate getting more and more notifications.

Please turn it off!!!

It's awful for those of us who use the back button to navigate as well, as they don't disappear then, or it takes several clicks to get back to where you were.

SlopesOff · 11/11/2020 17:31

Please stop it!!
Or let us turn it off.
If I want to see if a thread I am on or watching is updated I will go and look. Seeing that stupid little red thing at the top of the page is bloody annoying.
I keep thinking I have a PM which is the only reason I would want to look.
You really are trying to drive people away aren't you? If this is an idea to drag the site into the 20th century it isn't anything like the newer, fresher ones with options for fonts, colours, links etc. with easy access, it is just another sad alteration to a clunky old site that people are used to because of it's basic outdated 'charm'. Adding poncy little bits to it isn't going to make it newer or more interesting, please just stop the fiddling and maybe fix Trending so that we can see what we have already clicked on by repairing the colour changing links that no longer change.

SlopesOff · 11/11/2020 17:35

If I remove all my watched threads which I actually don't want to do I am still gong to be pestered by notifications for ones I have posted on. I don't receive e.mails for a reason, I don't WANT to be swamped by stuff I don't need.

I have barely any contact with the outside world, and it looks as if I won't be on here either unless it is fixed. Please let me turn it off.

LangClegsInSpace · 11/11/2020 17:40

Thanks for looking at that so swiftly Janine but did you have to @ me?? It set off the bloody red dot again!

Please turn this off until the bugs are fixed and we have a way to opt out.

AgeLikeWine · 11/11/2020 17:42

Thank you for listening, @JustineMumsnet. Allowing it to be turned off keeps everyone happy.

👏 👏 👏

forgetthehousework · 11/11/2020 17:55

Well, I still can't get any response when I press notifications, but there are only 9 now and yesterday the number was 10! So one has disappeared without me doing anything at all!
This really is rubbish.

In my experience, no you won't get any unless someone @s you. I only have one reasonably recent thread on my watch list and haven't had a notification for 24 hours as it's had no new posts.

Might it have been a thread you've hidden? Janine said they put a fix in place to stop them appearing.

noblegiraffe · 11/11/2020 18:19

If you view a recently added to thread using e.g. threads I’m on, the notification disappears for that thread.

margaritasbythesea · 11/11/2020 18:32

I find it annoying too. I can't imagine why I would want it.

I'm getting notifications all the time...I haven't been @ in any of them.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 11/11/2020 18:39

Stupid bold fail.

MollyButton · 11/11/2020 18:54

Please add a way to disable it - it is very annoying. Especially if you watch a TV or Radio show thread but you are ignoring it as you've got behind with watching/listening but others are happily chatting about it.

SoupDragon · 11/11/2020 19:07

Do you have threads on your watch list though?

My post was in response to someone who asked if clearing their watch list would stop the notifications - IME I think it would unless someone @s you.

Viviennemary · 11/11/2020 19:54

I don't really want notifications either. Or emails telling me the results of AIBU. If I want to see the results I go back to the thread. I can't see the point tbh

cbt944 · 11/11/2020 21:08

Still getting notifications on a particularly upsetting thread I had put on hide...

Cannot wait until this feature is turned off/made opt in only.

Was quite happy with looking at watched threads/threads I'm on prior.

bearlyactive · 11/11/2020 21:09

Why am I only getting notifications for one thread? I know people are posting on it because I check it regularly.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/11/2020 21:20

I have removed all active threads from my watch list because I can’t ignore a notification and it’s a pain to click through and mark all as read every 10 mins. I have zero notifications on any of my phone apps and zero unread emails, I thought that was normal but having read this thread I suspect I am weird.

Beekeeper1 · 11/11/2020 21:22

Get rid of it pleeease - it is bloody annoying!

Noflora · 11/11/2020 21:37

I don't need this but even if I wanted it it doesn't work. Most of the time this happens if I click the red dot ie the ad banner hides the clickable zones. Other times nothing at all happens if I click on the word notifications. Occasionally it works but I can't see the point.

How to view your Mumsnet notifications
AtlasPine · 11/11/2020 21:41

Can’t bear it! I am tuned to go to notifications and find it hard to ignore in case it’s a PM. But not a premium member so can’t really expect to call the shots.

Oldieandgoldie · 11/11/2020 21:56

Another one saying ‘Off, off, off!’. Please.
