Can we have an Asian and ethnic minorities board please?

I thought we were included on the Black board but I've been told in no uncertain terms its not for us so could we have an Asian and ethnic minority board please? Global majority is also fine. No one is excluded, everyone can post on it but it will be easier to note those posts that have a particular cultural element to them.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Seeing as the rest of the board is predominately white

KenAdams, can I ask, was it another poster or MNHQ who told you that?

JaJaDingDong · 16/09/2020 21:05

How can you tell?

Because white people are a larger percentage. This is why other ethnicities are called a minority.
KenAdams · 16/09/2020 21:25

@DysonDiva another poster the one who created the Black board.

@JaJaDingDong I didn't say it was for Asian people only?

I wouldn't waste your breathe, some people will only see what they want to.

OhReallyThen · 17/09/2020 12:01

@MNHQ* if you see this please don't just create an 'asians' board.

Asia is massive and calling us asians just encourages the homogenising of us into one 'other'.

Also because Asia is so big there's very little that is common across the whole of it. The struggles an Indian woman would face or questions she'd have are very different to that of a Thai or Chinese woman.

You could perhaps categorise us down into culturally similar groups (south Asians, south East Asians ect) if it's too difficult to go by countries (indian, Korean, Japanese ect) but please don't just lazily dump us together into one group of 'Asians'

Quaagars · 17/09/2020 12:17

Well if we're having a topic for black people only, and another one for Asian people only, how about one for white people only?

Oh stop Grin

Asia is massive and calling us asians just encourages the homogenising of us into one 'other'.

@OhReallyThen I think you have a really good point there, something MNHQ should think about if to go ahead, as you say not all lumped together
These threads are so informative, making me think!
Hope you all get your board, good luck

laudete · 17/09/2020 12:22

I too would like to vote for an "AME" board as there is now a Black-only board and we are the rest of the BAME cohorts.

I partially agree with OhReallyThen. I don't mind an Asian board as long as people realise Asia is the largest continent and has more than just India and Pakistan. China is definitely in Asia.

AriettyHomily · 17/09/2020 12:26

Why not keep going:

India
Thailand
Pakistan
Australia
France
China
USA

You get my drift, be comes rather unmanageable surely?

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/09/2020 12:28

How about a North, South, East and West?

Quaagars · 17/09/2020 12:32

Those are a list of countries though, not ethnicities
Why do you assume that say France, USA and Australia need their own board too?
There'll be a wide range of BAME in the countries you mention, why would they not be covered by any new boards being set up, like this one, or the new black one, or any others people campaign for?
You don't necessarily need a board for all 195 countries!

TeenPlusTwenties · 17/09/2020 12:35

I'm white, so this is nothing to do with me, feel free to stop reading now.

Given the demographics of the UK , I would have thought there was potentially some mileage in an 'Indian subcontinent' board (I'm thinking as well as cooking there would perhaps be threads on multigenerational households, arranged marriages, pressure to send money to relatives, saris, henna etc.) Probably showing my ignorance.

Then maybe also a generic Minority Ethnic board too. Just because I don't know whether there would be enough traffic for Chinese / Thai / South American / Iraqi etc.

Iammariedtojacksparrow · 17/09/2020 12:43

What might be useful is for MN to create a minority board, but then allow members to put in their own sub boards (or request it)

So we are not putting whole continents into one box

giantangryrooster · 17/09/2020 12:46

I'm white, so have no say. I'm also so sad about the division taking place currently, forcing us all to think about race when posting.

But surely it would be rasism if MN only provided for one specific group.

Of course there should be sections for all not just one loud group.

Good idea re. Asian and Ethnic Minorities board. I support this and hope Mumsnet listen.

To PP, White people don't need one. We do NOT have to deal with racist issues relating to the colour of our skin. For goodness sake, there is no point. These boards are places where communities can discuss lots of topics, including issues relating to race and/or culture/heritage without getting flamed by people who fail to understand the issue. If white people hadn't screwed up so immensely in the first place and then continued oppression on top of that, then Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities would not need their own thread. We white people failed there, so back off and start finding your supportive side. I'm actually disgusted at the amount of criticism that those asking are having to go through just to get their own space to talk.

MagpieSong · 17/09/2020 12:47

PP being @JaJaDingDong

Quaagars · 17/09/2020 12:48

Well said @MagpieSong and totally agree,

IDontMindMarmite · 17/09/2020 12:49

White people, listen please. BAME people aren't segregating themselves within MN, but they're creating an extra space to discuss specific issues. Like with Telly Addicts, gardening, home decor, feminism, children with SEN topics etc etc.

OhReally lumping Asian together is wrong, I agree (mixed heritage kids), but then the same applies for black people, theRe are huge differences in culture and they shouldn’t be lumped by skin colour.

But apparently that’s ok.
