Site adverts draining battery life

impostersyndrome · 23/07/2020 17:14

I wonder if this is a recent problem, but I've found that my ipad battery life is draining very fast, I think due to the adverts starting and refreshing automatically. I have no option to suppress them, so I cannot use the site unless I'm by a PC (perhaps a good thing Grin).

Sorry to hear that, @impostersyndrome. Obviously we want you to be able to use the site AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, so we'll try to see what's going on here. Smile

Can we just check if you're using the app or desktop version of the site on your iPad?

impostersyndrome · 24/07/2020 16:46

Hi @DawnMumsnet, I was using a desktop browser version on my iPad, not the app

Thanks for letting us know, @impostersyndrome - we've asked our Tech team to have a look. Hopefully we'll have an update for you soon.

impostersyndrome · 07/08/2020 15:26

Hello, I haven't seen any more about this, but it is clear that the issue is ongoing and seems to be because videos start automatically. When I'm using my ipad the video (e.g. the one with the chocolate cake recipe) actually pops out and plays in a separate window. Is this really necessary?

OP posts:
LilyMumsnet · 07/08/2020 15:49

Hi OP

Can you screenshot this advert for us, please? Both on Mumsnet and in the separate window, if possible.

Drumple · 07/08/2020 15:49

Same here. The advert today is for EE

impostersyndrome · 07/08/2020 16:40

It's the Microwave S'mores Lava Cake recipe.

OP posts:
impostersyndrome · 07/08/2020 16:42

(that's from memory). I'll let you know if I manage to grab a screenshot, but I'm currently avoiding the mobile site.

impostersyndrome · 08/08/2020 20:19

Right, here are the screenshots. First the ad appears full screen, then pops out to annoy you further.

Hi OP

Thanks so much for that.
We're waiting to hear back from our tech team now wrt the autoplay.
We'll be in touch when we've heard back.

impostersyndrome · 09/08/2020 14:48

Thanks very much @LilyMumsnet

I’m having the same problem ! Desktop version on I Pad with same advert ! Draining my battery and slowing my internet 😡

impostersyndrome · 10/08/2020 14:21

Thanks for posting @Lamby225, as i imagine it helps to know this is a more general problem. I hope they sort it out soon, as it’s rather annoying, to say the least.

OP posts:
DawnMumsnet · 10/08/2020 17:23

Sorry again that these ads are causing problems.

Our Ads team have asked if you're all definitely logged in when these ads start playing?

@impostersyndrome
@Lamby225
@Drumple

We're just trying to rule a few things out!

impostersyndrome · 10/08/2020 19:10

Yes, @DawnMumsnet. Logged in.

OP posts:
DawnMumsnet · 10/08/2020 21:30

Thanks for letting us know, @impostersyndrome. I think the Ads team were hoping you were going to say otherwise...

We'll be back with an update as soon as we can, so please bear with us. Smile

ParisOnWheels · 12/08/2020 14:14

I installed an adblocker months ago because of this very problem. And now I keep getting pop ups on here asking me to turn it off.

impostersyndrome · 12/08/2020 14:27

It is maddening. It’s not as though a recipe for microwave baking is going to be anything but niche (I’m battling to be polite here). Why on earth you have to repeatedly close it down, only for it to re-emerge, suggests the programmers haven’t considered the end user at all.

impostersyndrome · 13/08/2020 09:11

Morning @DawnMumsnet. I just got a Mumsnet video ad on my desktop PC (a different video ad that then popped out, with the microwave cake ad queued up). I wasn't logged in. It disappeared after I logged in.

I didn't screenshot it. Apologies, but I was rushing to work, as it were.

OP posts:
DawnMumsnet · 13/08/2020 10:00

Morning @impostersyndrome,

Thanks for letting us know. Have just double-checked with our Ads team and they've confirmed that the video advert and video player do not show (or definitely should not show) to logged in users, but will pop up if you're not logged in.

They've been checking to see if there's a bug but haven't found anything at all.

Can you tick the box to keep yourself logged in? That should solve the issue. But again, if you see an ad pop up when you're not logged in, please report back here.

impostersyndrome · 13/08/2020 10:34

Hi Dawn,

I have all sorts of reasons why I prefer not to be permanently logged in, so that wouldn't work for me.

In any case, it seems an unusual way to entice people to join Mumsnet, by annoying them with pop-ups!

OP posts:
NewtScamandersNiffler · 13/08/2020 11:26

No. For those of us who can't always log in (train wifi/unsecured network) this autoplaying cake video is draining the battery at double the rate.

Please remove the autoplay function.

Lamby225 · 13/08/2020 13:48

Just to confirm it doesn’t appear when I log in . Thanks for the tip NewtScamandersNiffler - I’m a bit of a technophobe 🙄

pctmmn · 13/08/2020 14:18

The autoplaying videos are super annoying.

DawnMumsnet · 13/08/2020 17:08

@impostersyndrome

Hi Dawn,

That's fine, and completely understandable.

We've let our Ads team know that you (and several others!) are being put off using the site because of these all-singing, all-dancing (all-cooking) pop-up videos. We'll be back with an update as soon as we've heard back from them.

Thanks again for your patience.
