Dementors

JemimaPuddleCat · 17/05/2020 19:21

Can you please, please ask the group of MNers that are using this term to stop coming onto CV related threads and throwing this word around? For whatever reason, they are being given carte blanche over their own series of threads which they use to mock and insult other MNers, but to continue throwing their tuppence into other threads in the Coronavirus topic screams of attention seeking.

I'm not sure why even using the term 'Dementor' to describe other posters is seen as okay, but if they'd not insert it into other conversations, this place would be a bit more pleasant at the moment.

OP posts:
Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/05/2020 20:16

I have watched people be called murderers for going fucking shopping
I've seen people told to shut up when they are at breaking point with regards to their mental health "because people are dying "
I've seen people screech "stay the fuck at home" when people are talking about takin their child with a learning disability out for two walks a day
Yes they are fucking dementors
The threads are a blessed haven
I stay away from the coronavirus topic because it would make my blood boil
Try the same - stay away from our safe haven

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/05/2020 20:19

So it’s ok to call people murderers (a genuine, vile thing), but not ok to call them dementors (fictional beings from a children’s book)?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/05/2020 20:23

The mind boggles
I've read some utterly vile comments
Telling people they deserve to die of covid, that their child's mental health is unimportant and that anything short of self flagellation in a darkened room with a bowl of gruel is evil
I have seen people gleeful and scaremongering over thread after thread
Vile behaviour
And someone uses a name from a children's story book and they are the problem
Really?

Destroyedpeople · 17/05/2020 20:24

And I have been called a 'cunt' 'arsehole' etc for suggesting that the police don't in fact have the right to demand ID. Also that I should beat my son (my 'evil crotch spawn') around the head with a plank of wood for knowing this and pointing it out to an over officious officer....

I mean ok it was on fb not here but 'dementors' is an excellent name for these people. They aRe insane.

PleasantVille · 17/05/2020 20:24

Unless censorship is introduced you can't expect anyone posting within the MN rules to be silenced because you don't like it.

MagdaS · 17/05/2020 20:25

Telling people they are 'deluded' at any sign of hope that things might be getting better is also making the site very unpleasant at the moment. Plenty of insulting going on all over the place where someone might be finding things a bit hard and not want to lock down until 2021. I don't think it's wrong to name it and call it out.

We are supportive and positive to all posters on our threads, and there are a range of views.

You don't have to read them.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/05/2020 20:25

Ah, have read some of the op's posts
Of the "stay the fuck at home" Ilk
Pot, kettle, black

MH1111 · 17/05/2020 20:28

I like the dementor threads, it’s like an island of sanity in a sea of bonkers

Mascotte · 17/05/2020 20:31

I would just suggest reporting any posts which you feel are inappropriate.

SummerHouse · 17/05/2020 20:32

I wish this place would be a bit more pleasant. I see the term dementor being aimed at the very unpleasant.

CoachBombay · 17/05/2020 20:37

Personally I find the attacks on those struggling with their mental health, when they are being open and honest about how they are feeling far more disgusting.

When someone is at breaking point, stop, listen, be kind, or simply move on, never ever mock them for how they are feeling.

OutwardBound2016 · 17/05/2020 20:51

Please report individual posts. I have done that frequently over the last few weeks mostly at posters who think it’s ok to tell people that their child deserves to die/sending your child to school is murder etc etc all found on the Covid threads.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/05/2020 20:54

OP hope you're just as keen to report some of the vile threads in the coronavirus topic and elsewhere that have said some pretty despicable Things over the last months

Destroyedpeople · 17/05/2020 20:56

Personally I find the terms used by the op ('for whatever reason' 'care blanche')really worrying and a good indication of how any dissent from the narrative is dismissed in a way that is just...chilling.

RhondaWentToRhyl · 17/05/2020 21:00

Totally agree op. Posters should debate points like grown ups, this weird 'dementor' label is both tedious and childish.

There are many, many anxious people who may overreact to certain situations and need reassurance not mocking.

Obviously calling someone a murderer is not ok either.

Just report it, some posters running round calling others 'dementors' tend to be unpleasant posters themselves.

'Relentless shouty posts instructing us all to STAY AT HOME YOU ARE KILLING PEOPLE, for doing our weekly shops.'

There has been unpleasantness and intolerance regardless of whether someone is a flouter or a rule abider. I do find posts get deleted and people get suspended if they continue in their twattery though.

KaronAVyrus · 17/05/2020 21:12

The dementors threads have been the best thing on Mumsnet for the past few weeks.

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/05/2020 21:12

Even rule abiders have been getting the shouty/ranty posts though, as they are not abiding by that particular poster’s version of the rules.
I got 6 pages of shit from someone about going on a 2 hour walk before the easing of lockdown, despite it being perfectly within the law. Apparently I was putting 100’s of lives at risk.

JemimaPuddleCat · 17/05/2020 21:19

@MH1111 I'm not referring to the Dementor threads. I'm referring to the comments that pop up on other threads, to accuse posters of being Dementors, for discussing concerns.

"Dementors are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them... Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. If it can, the Dementor will feed on you long enough to reduce you to something like itself... soulless and evil. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life." REMUS LUPIN'S DESCRIPTION OF DEMENTORS

Using that term towards another poster is akin to a personal attack. That is against Talk Guidelines.

Of course it's not alright for someone to accuse another poster of being a murder, or to act aggressively towards them for a perceived slight in any case. But it's also not alright to accuse another poster of being "among the foulest creatures that walk this earth".

OP posts:
wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 17/05/2020 21:19

I completely disagree. It's a way of mocking those going over the top.

An elderly man going for his paper every day was described as a selfish cunt. The site has gone mad.

Drivingdownthe101 · 17/05/2020 21:20

Oh come on. They’re fictional creatures from a children’s book.

CoachBombay · 17/05/2020 21:22

Ummm I hate to point this out op, murderers are real, your local HMP has a few, not one single Dementor walks this earth 😳

The comparison doesn't really work imo.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 17/05/2020 21:25

One poxy thread
I've hidden swathes of this place and am an inch from buggering off for good
And having read some of your posts op
