Coronavirus topic & trending now

Any way of stopping threads in the Coronavirus topic from appearing in Trending Now? I think you’ve previously done that for other boards (FWR?) and it’s really quite anxiety-provoking to keep seeing the thread titles pop up when you’ve hidden the board.

OP posts:
middleager · 15/03/2020 15:12

I hope they didn't do it with FWR.

PineappleDanish · 15/03/2020 15:13

Agree. That would be great.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/03/2020 15:14

I hope they didn't do it with FWR.

Indeed.

PurpleDaisies · 15/03/2020 15:15

I’d be very pleased with this.

Redglitter · 15/03/2020 15:17

It's more the CV threads that people insist on posting in AIBU etc that are a problem. You can hide the CV topic section so you dont see it

AngelicaKauffman · 16/03/2020 00:23

I came to make the same post!

You can hide the CV topic section so you dont see it

You still see them in the Trending Now box. Which is the main way I find new threads. But not anymore since every single trending now thread is just more coroavirus scaremongering.

ExServiceWoman · 16/03/2020 01:20

It's really annoying. Open up an AIBU and it's a bloody CV post!

I keep reporting them, and they do get moved but even I'm getting anxious now!!!

LightAsTheBreeze · 16/03/2020 05:27

It is getting worse as there is a lot of trolly people just starting threads for the sake of it with scaremongering titles, even if you want to read some of the threads it is very difficult as it is being overwhelmed.

They need to be taken off the Trending stuff as anyone interested can go to the topic to find them, I do as I find some informative but there is a lot of scaremongering shit on there.

vingt · 16/03/2020 06:39

I got round it by telling the ad blocker I use to block the trending now box

GreyhoundzRool · 16/03/2020 08:03

Yes please do this ! Every thread I click on in trending seems to take me to the corona virus topic which negates having all the threads in one place. Very frustrating

HebeMumsnet · 16/03/2020 12:37

Hello everyone!

Firstly, we just thought we'd better clear up the rumour that we ever stopped FWR appearing in trending. We do very occasionally keep a thread out of trending, but it's a bit tricky and there would need to be a really good reason for that (like dodgy trolls posting porn on a thread that's gone mad or similar). It's not something we've ever done as a matter of course or to a whole topic.

We do appreciate that trending is a bit swamped with coronavirus right now, but that is a true reflection of what is most popular on the boards at the moment. It would sort of defeat the object for us to remove them. So it's not something we're thinking of doing at the moment. We will pass on your thoughts about it though. These are strange times, so if we end up thinking about it again we will take your thoughts into consideration.

In the meantime, as PPs have said, you can hide entire topics from appearing for you (it won't affect the trending box but might make the boards easier for you to navigate around that). You can do that here.

Redglitter · 16/03/2020 14:45

@HebeMumsnet. But one thing which is constantly happening is CV thresds appearing in trending because people are posting in Chat/AIBU etc. I've just hidden about half a dozen threads in the past 10 mins. Are @MNHQ looking out for those to move them?

ExServiceWoman · 16/03/2020 16:20

@redglitter are you reporting them too? Not just hiding them?

Redglitter · 16/03/2020 16:55

@ExServiceWoman

I've reported loads. MN will be taking the report button away from me soon 🙈

Toria70 · 16/03/2020 17:03

I reported loads yesterday. Given up today as they're on every topic.

WTF is wrong with people??! We're not all gibbering wrecks with health anxiety. I come online to escape every day life, thanks.

It's bordering on insanity. Bet they're all the fuckers who've stripped the supermarkets bare with their panicking.

Angry
ShirleyPhallus · 16/03/2020 17:04

Agreed! Hide them please!

AlternativePerspective · 16/03/2020 17:15

I actually think the coronavirus topic needs to go. I likened it yesterday to those MH forums where people go on and all gain mutual support to harm themselves or worse, panic feeds panic, and while I realise that this is an interesting time for all of us, the hysteria which is being encouraged on there is not healthy.

Perhaps MNHQ could pin the “worried about coronavirus” thread to the top of active, and get rid of the rest. There really is no need for there to be multiple threads a day on the same topic - “when is the government closing schools x10/we’re all going to die hundreds/we should be afraid” and the list goes on.

I don’t have health anxiety, I do have a serious heart condition, and I believe I have been generally rational in the points I have made on some of those threads in the past.

But yesterday I hid the topic, and active looks so much different.

If removing the coronavirus topic isn’t something MNHQ would want to do,then perhaps a message at the top of every other board saying that any threads on coronavirus need to be put in the right board or alternatively MNHQ will delete them. Then maybe people will get the message to go and froth and panic in the one place.

PineappleDanish · 16/03/2020 17:19

Come and hang out with us on the "positive mental health" coronavirus thread. Lots of sensible information, a total ban on scaremongering, and pet pics.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/03/2020 17:21

I’m actually worried about some of the posters who keep starting threads there.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 16/03/2020 17:23

I agree with you Alternative There's a lot of fear feeding, there are a lot of mumsnetters with delicate mental health and this is really unhelpful.

Toria70 · 16/03/2020 17:46

I agree that the whole topic should be banned - there are lot of members with some serious anxiety issues that are being wound into utter panic on here.

There is no need for any of it.

ExServiceWoman · 16/03/2020 17:47

@redglitter me too! I keep expecting an email to say, can you please stop reporting now EMW!!

It's just madness. Are these people's lives so empty they they need to feed their despair frenzy.

Bring back National Service! That will sort 'em ;)

ShamefulBlanket · 16/03/2020 18:03

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 06:13

Now we have people posting all over AIBU because “I feel this post needs more traffic.” Angry
Come on @mnhq what you’re doing and allowing here is going far beyond people wanting to talk about corona and enabling fear and hysteria.

Can you at least put messages at the top of every post saying that corona topics not in the right category will be deleted? That way people will have to post in the doom mongers topic otherwise be deleted.

Mner2000 · 17/03/2020 06:28

Hid the CV topic this morning and loving it! I would love to get both CV and AIBU off my trending list- I have hidden them for a reason...
