The deletion of the Upfield thread on AIBU

PencilsInSpace · 11/10/2019 22:05

Deletion message: Hi all, as there is already an active thread about this subject on the Feminism boards we're going to close this one.

I don't understand or agree with this decision.

  1. people often start threads on the same subject on different boards - is it a new rule that there can only be one?

  2. Lots of posters hide FWR so might not know what has happened

  3. Upfield made their insinuations against all of MN, not just FWR

Can you say a bit more about your decision please?

One thread per topic would cut the number of threads (and therefore clicks) massively. We’ll be back to the days of Justine starting topics off, and all having to pay for a messaging function. It really doesn’t seem like a go-er.

So I presume that an error was made in the deletion message, and the reason wasn’t specifically because of two threads at the same time. An accurate deletion message would be much fairer, EG “Two threads at same time on contentious subject on a busy Friday night and we’re struggling to keep up”. But also better would then be to lock one thread to new posts, rather than deleting it entirely, and adding a link to the ongoing chat so it can be easily found. (I just had to help out a newer MNer via twitter who couldn’t find the other discussion.)

ThinkWittyThoughts · 12/10/2019 05:52

WTH are you thinking @MNHQ?

I've seen multiple threads in AIBU covering the same topic and they've been left to stand.

I've seen OPs saying "posting here & AIBU for traffic" that's identical posts.

Are you supportive of users creating their own content or not?! You really need to explain this. Or better yet reinstate the AIBU thread and apologise for being a twat.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 12/10/2019 06:35

Am I being naively Pollyanna-ish by thinking MNHQ's intentions are good here - in that they are recommending people visit the FWR boards and see the light so they actually understand the proper issues behind this?

I for one am sick of people saying "I never go there it's a pit of women vipers" and being stupidly unaware of the erosion of our hard won rights. Perhaps MNHQ are trying to raise awareness for the people currently burying their heads in the sand.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 12/10/2019 06:38

It is eyes like a puppy? It's too early for me.

eurochick · 12/10/2019 06:44

I don't understand this decision. It seems completely out of line with usual MN practice, where multiple threads on a topic are allowed to stand.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/10/2019 07:08

Could you address this, please @MNHQ?

Can you clarify whether it is a new policy that - across the entire site - you only have one active thread on any topic at any time? Because certainly, only one Meghan Markle thread at any time would be great news.

Otherwise it looks as if you're simply trying to silence or at least curtail debate on one particularly contentious issue, an issue which, ironically, is very pertinent to the silencing of women and girls.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:08

Are you fairly new to MN LangCleg?

Completely OT but I laughed out loud at this....

Crappy decision mnhq, you are clearly doing a mn version of a news blackout there.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:15

Posted on the FWR thread also:

  1. General public would probably read the AIBU.

2 there was a discussion around trans men there which people were starting to explain some key issues to do with feminism.

  1. Posters were saying they agree with flora and there was clear debate challenging those views as they clearly had no idea what is actually discussed on FWR.
  1. Multiple posters were defending Mn.

Silly decision.

NoCauseRebel · 12/10/2019 07:27

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles it is a pit of vipers though. Sorry but it is.

I have no doubt that there are some valid points made, but as a rule they’re so overtaken by the amount of bile and vitriol on there that it’s not hard to see why it’s the most hidden topic on MN.

As for this thread which was deleted, can anyone shed any light on what it actually was about? Or perhaps start another thread? Wink after all HQ haven’t responded to this one saying it’s TAAT yet have they? Wink.

And yay to the only one thread per topic rule. Brexit ... mmm,

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:36

Women who are being forthright and assertive are called vipers.

Women, know your limits.

flashbac · 12/10/2019 07:38

Scold's bridle again. Mumsnet you disappoint me. Stop helping in the act of silencing females or is this site going back to being just about babies just like men's rights activists want because that's all we are good for supposedly.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 12/10/2019 07:40

I'm stunned at the number of people who hide the FWR topic! It's the main thing that keeps me here.

So ... what is the real reason for the deletion HQ?

AuntieStella · 12/10/2019 07:44

It's their site, their rules.

I have noticed a few 'duplicates' being zapped recently (annoyingly including one on which I'd just added quite a long post). It's one of the several changes to moderating policy which seem to have come into effect in recent months.

I don't see any evidence this is targeted at any particular topics/posters, though I think it is a recent hange.

And there are times when the number of similar threads gets a bit ridiculous (thinking back to the death of Bob Holness)

Trewser · 12/10/2019 07:45

I expect its so they can say "look the t**fs are only on one part of the site, the mean old feminists"

Pinkyyy · 12/10/2019 07:46

I think you need to respond to this @MNHQ. I don't like to read the feminism board and I now don't know what's happened and whether or not I should be supporting this brand.

Alwaysgrey · 12/10/2019 07:50

Curious...why don’t people like the FWR section?

KatherineJaneway · 12/10/2019 07:51

Lots of posters hide FWR so might not know what has happened

If someone has chosen to hide FWR, maybe they are not interested in what happened. Just a thought.

flashbac · 12/10/2019 07:54

@alwaysgrey
I suspect it's because women are expected to be kind and nice all the time and not have views about certain things that make people uncomfortable.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:55

Pinkyy It boils down to:

Do you support the freedom of speech and debate?

The freedom of women to discuss things in the world that impact them due to their biology and how gender stereotypes and patriarchal structures still affect their daily lives?

Do you support rigorous safeguarding for children?

If yes, stop eating flora.

If meh or no, keep eating flora and killing orangutans

Pinkyyy · 12/10/2019 07:55

@Alwaysgrey I don't like it because I find the people on there far too aggressive and radical. I also think that the threads move too quickly for me and I can't keep up.

sockittome123 · 12/10/2019 07:55

Curious...why don’t people like the FWR section?

I muted it a while ago because of the excessive number of trans threads. I acknowledge that yes, it is feminism, but I prefer to filter what I see on my Active so I can actually post.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:56

Worth popping this here:

Trewser · 12/10/2019 07:58

I like FWR and think they do excellent work. I don't always agree with everything, but its totally absurd for people to say they are far right shills. They are just good old fashioned cunty feminists, more power to them.

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/10/2019 07:58

Well no sock as that would be compelled... mumsnetting.

I avoid FWR some days as it simply gets too depressing.

Pinkyyy · 12/10/2019 07:59

Thank you for that @NeurotrashWarrior. I definitely do support our right to free speech and debate and I also support safeguarding. Am I right in thinking this is a trans issue? It sounds like it. I don't personally eat flora but my some of my family like it, however I won't be buying it anymore.
